    1. [BROYLES] Re: Broyles Jewish Ancestry info
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IOG.2ACIB/273.3.2 Message Board Post: (This was posted on the BROYLES Message Board at Rootsweb and was ported to the BROYLES Mailing List.) First of all, let me set the original question to rest. NO, the BROYLES family was not Jewish! That said, let me explain that just because names "seem" to be Jewish does not mean they ARE Jewish. I'm not sure exactly whether those discussing this issue are referring to surnames or given names, but there is no such thing as "Jewish" names! Just because a surname ends in "...mann" (such as Fleischmann) does not make it Jewish. Just because surnames used in that part of Europe at that time "seemed" Jewish does not make then Jewish. The Christians of that time (1600-1700) used names from the Bible!!!!! e.g., Isaac, Isaah, Benjamin, Jacob , Matthias, Simeon (Simon), Aaron, Abraham, Absalom, Daniel, David, Ephraim, Ezekial (Ezekiel), Joseph, Joshua, Levi, Melchisadec, Samuel, Solomon, and so on, and so on. There are Parish records of our BROYLES ancestors back beyond 1600; they belonged to CHRISTIAN churches! Before that, there is evidence they came from France where their ancestors had been Catholic. So questions of Jewish ancestry can be laid to rest. As to Ursual RUOP, her family also can be traced back through the Christian church. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm NOT trying to defend the ethnic/religious heritage of our BROYLES ancestors out of any dislike of or prejudice toward people of Jewish heritage. I would be proud to have Jewish heritage, it's just that you're not going to find any Jews among the Germanna Colonists! So, to those who look at names and think "Jewish", why does it matter? Does that make them any more or any less our ancestors? Does that make them any more or any less important? There are none of us that are of "pure" descent from any ethnic/religious group. Don't you know that Americans are the result of the merging of practically every group of people in the world? Look at your money sometime -- "E Pluribus Unum" -- "One From Many"! Regards, George W. Durman
