Herbert was born at his parents home in Cooper County near Clarksburg MO. He was the son of James Walter (Pardner) Wilson and Mary Lewis Broyles Wilson. He was born January 15, 1910 during the passing of Haleys Comet. It was always told that the doctor took him to the window and pointed it out to Herb so he could say that he had seen Haleys Comet twice in his lifetime, at birth and again at 75, which he did. Herb started elementary school at Mt Pleasant, MO then went to Clarksburg Grade and High School. He married Helen E. Peters, December 29, 1932. Herb enlisted in the Naval Construction Corps (the Seabees) during WW II. Herb worked most of his life in the construction trades with the exception of a few years at the California Woolen Mills (MO). He worked in the San Pedro Shipyards near Los Angeles CA prior to WW II and in the lead mines in Galena IL and at the Savanna Army Depot after the war when he and Helen settled in the Mid-West. He finished his career with Arbanas Construction in Joliet, IL as a Construction Supervisor and a premier concrete mason. In 1972 Herb retired to California MO to help his wife Helen care for her aging parents until their deaths in 1984. Herbert was a 3rd Degree Mason, a member of California, MO Lodge # 183 and a member of California Chapter #58, Royal Arch Masons. He was a member of the California MO VFW Post #4345. He was a charter member of the Family Circle C. B. Club and was known to many by his handle Whip. Herbert died Monday, November 5, 2001, 24 hours after suffering a heart attack. Helen was by his side holding his hand as he passed, he was alert to the end and in no pain. Herb was a devoted husband to Helen. He was a loving father, grandfather, son, brother uncle and friend to all. He will always be remembered for the joke he had to share with anyone who would listen. His final joke wasWhat can go all over the world without ever leaving the corner? A postage stamp, of course. We love you Grandpa! <
