This is embarrassing to admit, but I appear to have lost about four or five months worth of email messages from my Hold folder last night. I still haven't figured out the details of what happened. It appears the folder contents were deleted as I exited my email program. I received no indication of any problem at the time This would all be merely inconvenient and annoying except for the fact that that I then updated my backup copies of my message archive before becoming aware of the loss.. Mind you, I'm a 'belt and suspenders' kind of guy when it comes to maintaining my email archives. I have messages that date back twenty years in that database and I've gone to some lengths to retain them. I keep synchronized working copies of the archive on both my desktop and my laptop machines and I regularly update two complete sets of copies on different hard drives on my desktop machine. In addition, at longer intervals, I write a copy to CD-ROM. In the present instance, I seem to have lost the contents - about 4000 to 5000 messages from my Hold folder. That's the folder where I have been collecting genealogically oriented messages both sent and received from the archive with a view to wading through them one message at a time and acting upon them as needed - updating my genealogical database, corresponding with the sender, updating my address book, what-have-you. We won't discuss the number of man-hours I've expended in the last month wading through my entire database of approximately a hundred thousand messages to identify those messages and move them to the Hold folder for more considered review and action. I can go to my CD-ROM to recover all the more dated messages. The problem is that the CD-ROM was last written in June. That means that all the genealogically oriented messages (naturally the ones I least wanted lose!) since June have gone to that great bit-bucket in the sky where all good little bits and bytes go when they die. Just coincidentally, it also appears that I have suddenly acquired some problems with the hard drive on my laptop - the machine where I was working when the folder contents 'went away.' I've been running Norton Disk Doctor on it, but there appears to be some kind of problem with the directory structure and possibly the fat table on the C: partition. That's computer-speak for "I may have to re-format that entire drive and start over - meaning re-install Windows, re-install all my software, copy several gigabytes of data files from across the network, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera." In the interim, whilst I'm diagnosing, repairing and what-not, I call upon the goodness of your hearts to retransmit any messages you sent to me or that I sent to you between 1 Jun 2000 and 15 Oct 2000. I realize that most of you are not compulsive email collectors like I am, but please check your folders for me. Your Sent folder will probably retain any messages you sent to me and the Deleted folder may contain any messages from me - assuming you are not one of those folks that habitually deletes the contents of those folders before exiting your email program. -- Robert W. 1. [BROYLES] Explanation of "By Way Of" in the From: Headers of the Lists
    2. George W. Durman
    3. As Listowner, I receive all "error" messages to the Mailing Lists which I manage. Sometimes, when I feel the messages need to be posted to the Lists immediately, I will go ahead and forward them. In the From: header, you will see the original sender's email address and a (by way of "George W.Durman" <sgtgeorg@concentric.net>). There are several reasons why this is necessary. Here are a few examples: 1) The sender sends to an address that contains "-request" in it. Such addresses are only for subscribing and unsubscribing. Here are the correct formats for them: LISTNAME-L-request@rootsweb.com (For subbing and unsubbing.) LISTNAME-L@rootsweb.com (For posting messages.) In the above example, "LISTNAME" would be replaced with the List's actual name, say "BROYLES", "GERMANNA_COLONIES", "WILHITE", etc. In this example, just make sure you leave out the "-request" part of the address. 2) Sometimes a user subscribes with one address and his/her ISP or email service uses a slightly different "dynamic" form. Example: JohnDoe@whatever.net (User subscribes with this address.) JohnDoe@mail.whatever.net (ISP adds the "mail" part.) JohnDoe@email.whatever.net (ISP adds the "email" part.) In this example, you need to find out from the ISP what the EXACT form of the address is going to be from the ISP; then, subscribe with THAT form. 3) Users subscribe with one valid email address, but have one or more other addresses. They then send email from one of the other unsubscribed addresses. This causes "not a subscriber" error messages to the Listowner. In this example, you need to let the Listowner know what the other addresses are that you might be using from time to time, so he/she can add those unsubscribed addresses to the "Accept List" for the Mailing List. This will not result in duplicate copies of posts, but will ensure that you can send email from any of the other addresses. This note from me is just a reminder to read the Welcome Message that you receive. It gives the proper addresses for subbing and unsubbing and for posting email. And, PLEASE when you send me a notice that your email address has changed, and you want me to unsub the old one and re-sub the new one, PLEASE, PLEASE give the old address and tell me which Lists you are subscribed to!!!!! It really helps and saves me from having to reply and ask for the information. Regards, SgtGeorge Listowner

    1. [BROYLES] Information on Bridgeton Memorial Park
    2. BRIDGETON MEMORIAL PARK Bridgeton, Missouri 1843 -------- 1963 This burying ground at 4616 Long Road was made into a memorial park in 1962. In 1959 several lawsuits were filed against the City for allowing the cemetery to deteriorate. Individual stones had already been removed "through error and misunderstanding" but members of the Bridgeton Historical Commission were able to learn the names of some who were buried there and a large monument was erected in 1963 which bears this inscription, "We honor the people buried here. They were part of this nations adventure and their vision lighted the path we follow today." At the dedication ceremonies, Mrs. Anna Wilson gave a talk about colored veterans who are buried here. Records indicate that the cemetery was integrated from its beginning in 1858. It was in use as late as 1954 and at least 100 people are buried in the two acres. On the bronze plaque of the monument are the following names: Annie Adams Auston Edwards Enoch Mumps Edward Walker Benjamin Adams Auston Edwards, Jr. Elio Phillips Kit Walker George Adams Grace Edwards Eliza Phillips Lizzie Walker Lottie Adams Katie Edwards Ike Phillips Quiller Walker Ben Alexander The Galliger Family Tilly Phillips Tommy Walker George Alexander Almiria Grannison Walter Phillips Barbara White Henry Alexander Creed Hall Bell Pruitt John White Lucy Alexander Creed Hall, Jr. The Pueroa Family Noah White Eugene Allen Hillard Hall Fred Riddle Shibina White Arthur Bassett Hiram Hall James Robertson Alice Wilson Dr. William Berry Jack Haggerty Will Rush Ernest Wilson Febie Bivens The Heidron Children Baron Scott Geroge Wilson George Bivens Lizzie Hodge Louise Scott Theodore Woodson Lizzie Bivens Steve Hodge Lydia Scott Baby Woolfolk Millie Bivens The Horn Family Laura Smith Hadley Woolfolk Rafe Bivens Nasrus Jackson Roberta Stanton Gibson Wright Samuel Bivens Amy Johnson Lewis Stevenson Hiram Wright Cosley Black George Johnson Fred Steward Mamie Wright Edward Black Julia Johnson Henry Stocker Green Young Hiram Black Robert Johnson Joseph Taylor Mary Ann Young King Black Turner Johnson Abe Thompson Skip Young Sam Balck Mr. Knight Henry Thompson Bell Carter Henry Lewis Hiram Thompson Lilly Cheeks Hal Lint Jenny Thompson Henry Clanton Luvenia Lint Mamie Tucker Fred Dickson The McClure Family Barney Vonsray Joe Duglas, Jr. Jessie Moore Texas Hall Wadlington This list was given to me by The Missouri Historical Society P.O. Recently, as Listowner of these Rootsweb Mailing Lists, I have been receiving too many "Reject" messages from various ISP's to NOT say something about it. For Heaven's sake, how do you expect to receive messages from friends and family if you ISP mailbox fills up and you can't receive any more messages? And, if you don't want to empty out your ISP mailboxes on a regular basis, why even use email in the first place? So, please, if you are one of the guilty parties, do your best to log on and download email often enough that further emails are not "bounced". What I would like is, if you don't care enough to empty your mailbox, please unsubscribe to the Lists to which you are subscribed. You are eventually automatically unsubscribed anyway, after enough bounces, but, in the meanwhile, you cause unnecessary Internet traffic and just add to the already over-burdened system. DOWNLOAD YOUR EMAIL ON A REGULAR BASIS! Regards, SgtGeorge George W. Durman Listowner

    1. [BROYLES] Broyles deaths, names - Greene County TN 1908 to 1924
    2. Douglas/Ungaro
    3. My thanks to Elaine who sent me information to help me locate more details on my African American Broyles family of Greene County, east TN. I wanted to share the full list with other BROYLES researchers. There may be more "Broyles" buty they weren't spelled that way. The death record info below is for all BROYLES in Greene County from 1908 to 1924. Of course, to be totally certain you have to look at the actual records yourself, but this is a start. I have marked the info for my known ancestors and for all the Broyles listed as Black: My 2nd Greatgrandfather is listed but not with his full name: James Franklin "Frank" Broyles. He is listed as Frank Broyles (Black). Also on the list are my Grandmother's teenage Aunt, MARTHA Broyles, who died in 1914 of illness at age 17; and my Grandmother's Uncle ULYSSES Broyles, died 1924, age 31. Martha and Ulysses were 2 of the children of Frank Broyles and his wife, Hester YOUNG Broyles. They married in Greeneville on 8 November 1876. My 2nd Greatgrandmother Hester Young Broyles died in Greeneville in July 1932. I would like to identify the other African American Broyles listed: George Broyles and KING Broyles, the oldest - died age 80 in 1914. George Broyles may have been a brother or other relative of my 2nd Greatgrandfather, James "Frank" Broyles. King Broyles was born about 1834. The death record lists his parents as Bob ALEXANDER and MAG BROYLES. I would love to know more about who they were. The first group, below, shows name, age at time of death, year of death, and death certificate number. The second list shows the same except doesn't give age at death. I hope this info helps other east TN area Broyles descendants. Marian E. 3. The following web site has info on Michael Broyles and all of his children. He was a bit like the actor Anthony Quinn in having children into his 70's. David Franklin Broyles was his 15th and final child. http://www.ultranet.com/~deeds/broyles/html/d0001/g0000025.htm#I70 You can get a copy of Michael's will from the Parke Co. courthouse. It lists all of his children by both wives, if I recall correctly. The following page is David's. http://www.ultranet.com/~deeds/broyles/html/d0001/g0000004.htm#I297 "David Neal" <dneal@iname.com> on 08/21/2000 12:11:47 AM Please respond to BROYLES-L@rootsweb.com To: BROYLES-L@rootsweb.com cc: (bcc: Steve Broyles/Bos/Teradyne) Subject: [BROYLES]-INDIANA I am a decendant of David Broyles son of Micheal Broyles, born abt 1771 and Micheal son of John Broyles. 1. [BROYLES] Publications for Germanna Families Research
    2. George W. Durman
    3. (From George W. Durman [SgtGeorge], Rootsweb Listowner.) THIS IS NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT !!!!! (I have no financial interest whatsoever in any of these publications or genealogy related items.) The information I am providing here is merely to advise any new users, and remind old users, about some publications and genealogy-related items that may be purchased by those researching the following Germanna families, of whatever spelling variant: BROYLES/BRILES WILHITE/WILHOIT FLESHMAN/FLEISCHMANN BLANKENBAKER KINDLER MARTIN KRUM/CRUM COPP/CUPP WALTERS PAINTER and many more families associated with the BROYLES Family, such as FOX, BYRD/BIRD, etc. A Germanna "cousin" of ours, John "Ken" Broyles, Sr., has compiled genealogy data on BROYLES and the above related families. You can go to this URL to read about his publications, scope of coverage, price, etc.: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/kenbroy.html Ken has researched the BROYLES/BRILES genealogy lines for over 30 years. Just as John Blankenbaker is the recognized "guru" for all Germanna genealogy, Ken is our "guru" for BROYLES/BRILES and related families. He was one of the first to convert Dr. Arthur Leslie Keith's Manuscript to a more ordered and more easily-read document. Over the years Ken has published a 10-volume set of "The Broyles Family Ties", complete with indices for each volume. Each volume contains an assortment of records, plus several individual family lines, which were complete at the time they were published. As an example, you will find the family lineage for Frank BROYLES, the former University of Arkansas head football coach and Athletic Director, in one of the volumes. There are many lineages for the related families listed above. In addition to "The Broyles Family Ties", Ken published, for years, a bi-monthly "Broyles Family Newsletter", in which he provided information on births, marriages, deaths, etc., of BROYLES/BRILES and other Germanna family descendants. This was information provided by his subscribers, and information gathered from public sources. In the Newsletter, Ken provided Census Data, cemetery data, wills, court records, etc., with which he was constantly being provided by dedicated genealogists who subscribed to the Newsletter. (NOTE: The Broyles Family Newsletter ceased being published as of August 2000; however all back issues are still available.) Last year, Ken finished the first publication of Dr. Arthur Leslie Keith's typescript. (Dr. Keith has been discussed on the GERMANNA_COLONIES Mailing List, and it is because of his decades-long and painstaking research that we have most of the material we have today on the BROYLES/BRILES and WILHITE/WILHOIT families.) The "Keith Typescript" is in three spiral bound volumes (plus a fourth volume for the index), and, in addition to Dr. Keith's original material, contains wills and all the census records on the BROYLES Family that Ken had available at the time of publication. These volumes actually contain considerably more than the individuals and data from Dr. Keith's typescript. Ken has added to the family lines that Dr. Keith started in the early 1900's, in many cases, completing family lines down to the present generation, and adding lines that were not in Dr. Keith's original typescript. There are approximately 800 pages in the 4 volumes, and they are 8½" X 11" in size. Several years ago, Ken received The Brohl Coat of Arms from Heinrich Brohl of Germany. No one is sure if BROHL is related to our family line, although it is generally accepted that it is just another spelling variation of the original common name, of which BREUEL, BREHEL, BREYHEL, etc., were also other spellings. Regardless, The Brohl Coat of Arms has been reproduced in color on an offset press, and is 8" X 10" in size, and we thought some of you might be interested in it. (There is no Coat of Arms for the name BROYLES, even though some may try to sell you one. The name BROYLES was not used by this family until their arrival in America.) The BROHL Coat of Arms is dated 1332. Also available is a wooden notebook (3 ring binder) for your family history. Ken has put the BROHL Coat of Arms on the front. (If you request it, Ken will put BROYLES on the front instead of BROHL, as he had done for himself.) The wooden notebook has the Coat of Arms painted on the cover, in color, with a clear finish over it. (Ken has also indicated that he will make wooden notebook covers with Coats of Arms for other family surnames. All that is required is that the customer provide a good color photo of the Coat of Arms.) KEEP IN MIND that, although Dr. Keith's work was focused on the BROYLES family, in researching this family, many, many data on other Germanna families were uncovered and included in the work. To reiterate one of my favorite sayings, "You can't scratch one Germanna family without scratching most of the other Germanna families." And, this is especially true for the BROYLES family. The original immigrant, Johannes BREYHEL/BREHEL (John BROYLES), had only two sons and one daughter who lived to continue his line. But, these three children had many children, who had many children, etc. In my relatively small database (only 4900+ names), I find the following families who had at least one BROYLES ancestor. (This includes Germanna families, and other families of German descent who were in the Germanna area): FLEISCHMANN/FLESHMAN, BROWN/BRAUN, CRIGLER/KRIGLER, YEAGER/YAGER, WILHITE/WILHOIT, WEAVER/WEBER, WAYLAND/WEYLAND, YOWELL/ÜHL, STONECIPHER/STEINSEIFER, COPP/CUPP, CRUM/KRUM, COOK/KOCH, PAINTER, RUSH/RAUSCH, RECTOR, SNAPP, HAMMER, BLANKENBAKER, KLUG, HOFFMAN/HUFFMAN, CLORE, VOGT/VAUGHT, WALTERS, MARTIN, TANNER/GARVER, LEATHERS, BITNER, and BURGNER. Not ALL lines of these families have a BROYLES ancestor, but some do. What this means is that if you search through Dr. Keith's manuscript, you might find important data for your research on the above names. And, I have input only the first 1½ volumes of Ken Broyles' "The Broyles Family Ties" into the database. There is no telling how many other links I will find once I get ALL the data into the database! AGAIN, please don't consider this a commercial advertisement! If you're not interested, just ignore this post; however, countless researchers have been able to complete their ancestry and link back to the original Germanna immigrants by using Ken's publications.
