    1. Re: [BROYLES] BIRD - BROYLES
    2. I probably can`t shed any light on the Bird(Byrd) Wilhite connection but I have noticed that the wilhit family of Blount, Morgan and cullman Co`s of Al. have desc`s named Bird as a given name. and both were the very early steelers of this area. Though this "bunch" didn`t come through Isaac but did come through John Pittman and Mary McCoy(we think she was a McCoy) no mdg. record found uet. They came from the Green co. Tn. area. goodluck, Sue in Al.

    2. Note that they named early children Matthias and Eva, after Mary Ann's parents. This suggests that other children were named for David's parents. According to the 1850 census he was born in 1782 in Virginia. 1. [BROYLES] BLANKENBECKLER / GERMANNA COLONIES REUNION 2002

    3. BLANKENBECKLER / GERMANNA COLONIES 2002 REUNION THIS WILL BE THE SECOND ANNUAL NATIONAL REUNION TO BE HELD IN WILLOW SPRINGS, MISSOURI........ MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND MAY 26th and 27th SUNDAY and MONDAY 8 AM to 5 PM THE REUNION WILL BE IN THE CITY PARK AT THE PAVILION. Put this on your calendar and make your motel reservations. SPECIAL UPDATE At 11:20 AM 02/09/2002 -0500, I sent this message to Paula Speraneo of West Plains, Missouri . Hi Paula, Our "Blankenbeckler/Germanna Colonies 2nd Reunion" will be held in Willow Springs on the 26th &27th of May this year. That is on a Sun & Mon. I have suggested to all who are thinking of attending that since most will be there on Sat. it would be a shame to waste that day & if there is enough interest we could meet & spend a couple of hours doing some research at the West Plains Library. Before doing that I called to make sure the library will be open that day & of course it will be. I would like to ask your permission to insert your response below into the next updated information that I send out to all our cousins that are attending the 2002 reunion. Paula's response; . As for your proposed "meet" on that Saturday, I'd bet if you had enough people coming and phoned Mrs. Wheeler, she might be able to have a Society volunteer there that day, as they used to open the old offices on occasion with prior arrangements. The volunteers, especially the older members, just have so much to offer in the way of personal memories.... not to mention their familiarity with the materials. --------------------------------------------- Update on the South Central Missouri Genealogical Society holdings: All the Society's materials have been placed in the genealogy room at the West Plains Public Library, 750 Broadway, West Plains, MO 65775 phone 417-256-4775, email ctiques@townsqr.com <mailto:ctiques@townsqr.com> Hours for the library are 9-5 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 9-6 on Tuesday and Saturday. I spoke with library personnel in late January, and there are Society volunteers there every Monday and Wednesday. Library personnel are there every day if you need help. All the materials have been logged into the library computer system, and materials seem to be expanding every month according to the SCMGS newsletters. Other than wishing that we could get a knowledgeable, "knows-everything-that's-gone-on-in-the-area-for-umpteen-years" Mary Ellen Wheeler or her clone there to work every day, I think the expanded hours are a great asset to those of us on irregular schedules, and especially for those who come in from out of town who wouldn't necessarily be able to access the records during the old hours. The SCMGS meets every other month beginning in January. Annual membership is $8 per individual or $10 per couple, and include a quarterly newsletter with free queries and surname listings. Requests for information or membership should be sent to: Mrs. M. E. Wheeler 1043 W 5th St. West Plains, MO Ph. 417 256-3966 ----------------------------------------------- Hope your reunion goes well. Paula [end of message] If any of you have missed the original postings on the reunion please let me know & I will get it to you right away. The original messages contains all the information concerning the reunion. Also, if you need help or questions answered contact me. That's what I'm here for. I will do everything in my power to make this a pleasant trip for you. HELEN CAST hcast@dmv.com 310 PARK ROW SNOW HILL, MARYLAND 21863

    2. John Summerfield was a famous charismatic preacher who died young, in 1824. You can read about him at http://www.ccel.org/b/bangs/history_mec/HMEC25.HTM A web search on "John Summerfield" turns up many genealogies containing men named John Summerfield <surname> Lorenzo Dow as another well known preacher, and we find his name in the family too. 1. Re: [BROYLES] Michael Broyles
    2. Thanks for your help Steve. I will try and look at the deeds. I have explored the Cornelius angle as there were not too many in the Watauga with that name. I thought I read somewhere that Michael was at some Fort with Gov. Servier during the Rev War. Would you know if this was true and where that Fort was? >> His pension application says that his home in east TN was a fort against Indian attacks. He "spied, forted, and guarded". The building was used as a tobacco grading shed in recent times and was only torn down in the 1960's. I descend from Michael. I noticec that Daniel was not listed as taxible until 1790 in the Watauga. I wondered if he might have been further south or have tried his luck in North Carolina or Kentucky first. I can't find record of him in Virginia. >> Do tax lists exist prior to 1790? If not, or if there's only one for example, it would be rash to conclude he wasn't there prior to 1790. Tax records, even if kept yearly, often skipped the less wealthy inhabitants. On the other hand, if there are regular records and he is not found on them until 1790, then I'd agree with your interpretation.

I noticec that Daniel was not listed as taxible until 1790 in the Watauga. I wondered if he might have been further south or have tried his luck in North Carolina or Kentucky first. I can't find record of him in Virginia. Daniel didn't seem to be the stay at home type. He was only in the Watauga for 10 - 15 years then headed to other places, White, McMinn, Rhea and possibly other areas. The probate record for Cyrus indicated that he borrowed money from Cyrus and Adam was rather disturbed with him. That is where I got the impression regarding him being a bit on the wild side as well as the fact that he joined in the War at age 15. Cornelius and James Madison his sons were very stable though. Both were well respected in their communities. James Madison was a clerk in Monroe county . Cornelius took in James Madison's children after his death (census records), he even supported James Madison's son Robert while he studied medicine. Are you a decendant of Daniel? Thanks again for your help, I'll check the angles you suggest. Susan
