Hello all. Just a note to remind all of you Germanna researchers to send in your membership applications to the Memorial Foundation of the Germanna Colonies (aka The Germanna Foundation). There are great things in store for all us descendants and researchers, and it behooves us to become active members of the Foundation. You can read about the Foundation and find membership applications at this web site: http://www.germanna.org If any of you are subscribers to other Germanna Surname Mailing Lists, please feel free to pass this on, or to compose an email yourselves about membership. We must ALL become involved! Let's sign up now and start making plans for the Germanna Reunion to be held in July, 2002. Thom Faircloth, the new President and CEO of the Foundation, is doing great things, and next year's Reunion promises to be the best yet. SgtGeorge George W. Durman

I am finding it hard to think what will happen next month much less next year. Let us all pray that we can meet next year and that we will be at peace. Life can change so fast and so can one's focus. I had spent months researching and preparing for a vacation where I would visit the areas (and even the homes) where some of my ancestors lived. I had an airline reservations Friday and a two week trip planned out including visits to cousins I had never met and small family reunion. Tuesday changed all of that, and it also changed my focus. Non of us know when we say good by in the morning to a loved one that they it may be our last word or theirs. Treasure each day as if it was your last. God Bless America

Folks, don't forget the Annual East Tennessee Germanna Descendants Reunion to be held in Washington Co., TN, on 8 and 9 September. I've had positive responses from about 25 families across the country so far. I sure would like to see more of you show up. Just remember, if you descend from ANY of the East Tenn. Germanna families, you are not only welcome to attend, you are ENCOURAGED to attend! Check out the web page for the Reunion to see a list of the families that has been compiled so far. I know it is not complete, and if there are any families (of whatever spelling variant) not there, be sure to let me know. If the Reunion this year is successful, we want to expand it in future years. I know that the official Germanna Reunion at Germanna is the main event of the year for us, but I don't think there is another place in the country where so many families are represented, and from which so many people descend, as East Tennessee! (Which really includes about half of Tennessee, all the way over into what is officially called "Middle Tennessee". If you draw a line down through the middle of the state, you'll find that a very large percentage of Germanna descendants can trace back to that half of the state. It doesn't matter if your main lines trace back to KY, IL, IN, or GA, AL, MS, AR, TX, chances are those ancestors came through TN first. Some stayed in East. TN, but many, many of them went on to "greener pastures", north and west. I urge any who can to attend the Reunion. And, anyone reading this post has permission, and should, forward it on to other Germanna-related Mailing Lists. The latest info can be found at this URL: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/easttennesseereunion.html If there's anything I have omitted from this web page, be sure to let me know. I welcome suggestions for changes and/or additions. See you at the Reunion, SgtGeorge George W. Durman
Hello Gayla. What a wonderful idea! Wish I had thought of it! If anyone wants to "reserve" a day of the week and a time for specific Germanna surnames, let me know and I'll put a little note above the Chat window, showing that information. I'm sending CC:s of this to the other Lists I manage so other users can request time. In requesting days and times, let's try to restrict the length of time to, say, 2 hours. OK????? Maybe breaking up each evening into time blocks, such as 6:00-8:00, 8:00-10:00, 10:00-12:00, for example. That would give 3 time blocks for each day, resulting in a total of 21 different "slots". Let me know what the rest of you think, SgtGeorge George W. I like the idea of chatting w/ other researchers on the same Germanna surname. Are specific dates (at least initially) being set up for specific Germanna lines (i.e.: Renner on Monday, Wilhite/Wilhoit on Tuesday, etc...)? I, for one, am curious & interested. I look forward to hearing more plans. Good luck one & all, Gayla B Carter GBC1955@aol.com
At the bottom of the home page for the GERMANNA COLONIES Family History web site, there is now a Chat Room. It is simple to use. You just type in a User Name, and real name and email address if you wish, then click the Connect button below the boxes. It will only work if there is also someone else logged on, otherwise you would have to talk to yourself (G). This is just something I'm trying out. It was free for me to install and is free for you users, although there will be small ads that pop up at the bottom, which can be ignored. If it's not used, I will probably just take it off. I don't know how useful something like this is to you. I tentatively indicated that there would be a Chat every Sunday from 7:00-11:00 PM; however, if a group of you make prior arrangements, this would be a wonderful place for you to chat, ask questions, answer questions, help someone, etc., at any time. For instance, if anyone had something they really needed to talk to several others about, they could send email to each of them and arrange a time and date to use the Chat Room. Or, anyone could post a note here, saying something like: "We will be on the Chat Room Tuesday night at 8:00 PM and would like to have all RECTOR researchers join us. We would like to discuss, specifically, the family of Nancy RECTOR, who was born in Rowan Co., NC, in 1790, but all RECTOR questions are welcome." I don't know how the rest of you feel, but when I'm using the Chat Room I would like to see at least the names of the "chatters", not just a "User Name". Email addresses are really not necessary, unless some- one needs to write to you and requests it. Be assured that Rootsweb is a very, very secure site and giving your names and/or email addresses will not result in anyone "stealing" them. Users can always pass emails back and forth, but that takes time. You can use the Chat Room in "real time" and immediately see the conversations. Anyone, on any List, Forum, Board, etc., is welcome to participate. I'm sending a CC: to each of the other Lists I manage, but I would suggest that if you are sending an announcement of a get-together in the Chat Room, you post it on the GERMANNA_COLONIES List, as well as to the specific SURNAME List involved. If any of you want to pass on this email to other Mailing Lists, fell free to do so. Just as long as the chats are restricted to actual Germanna-related topics, and notifications of planned chats are sent here to the GERMANNA_COLONIES List. I think this free tool may be of great benefit to some of us. If any of you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, please don't hesitate to email me here on the List. (NOTE: You must be using a web browser that supports JAVA Scripts, which includes MSIE and Netscape, as long as you have them configured to allow JAVA and JAVA Scripting.)
