I am working on that part of my family now. Apparently she moved to Baltimore with her brothers (do not know which ones) and this is where I suspect she met and married my Grandfather - Alfred Leon Sterner. Their children were Elmer Claude, Alfred Leon Jr., Frederick William (my father), Evelyn, Beatrice (June), Marian and Lillian (died when she was about 1). Mabel Frances died in Baltimore and is buried in an Episcopal cemetery in Baltimore with my Grandfather, my Great Grandfather (not sure which one) and the still born child. I have visited the cementery and am now waiting to get the documentation from the church. I do know that Mabel Frances's family was from Page County and the Luray area. My Aunt Evelyn Sterner Pearce use to attend Broyles family reunions. Please contact me with the information you have and I will share what I have to date.

    3. I was in Greene Co. TN this pass week-end. I will be back up there in a couple of weeks. I will go to the library and check out some records. And see what I can find on Jacob W. Broyles. I know Keith said his findings were from license. Ken Broyles ----- Original Message ----- From: "William Broyles" <wbroyle1@nycap.rr.com> To: <BROYLES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 08, 2002 12:29 PM Subject: [BROYLES] Jacob W. Broyles & Mariah Reynolds Jacob W. Broyles, described in Keith as "Wild Jacob" and "Winter Jacob", married Mariah Reynolds in 1853. This was his 3rd marriage. In 1870 they and their seven children were living in Horse Creek (U.S. Census 1870 Greene TN Roll 1531 District 1 Page 20). I am looking for later information on Mariah and the children, and their descendants. I would also welcome any information about the "escapades" of Jacob mentioned in Keith. I am a direct descendant of one of the children, Rufus, and have extensive information on him and his descendants. I also have some information on Mariah and some of the other children after 1870 that I would be happy to share. Bill Broyles

    3. The reference in Keith to Margaret Broyles for the 3rd marriage is in error. I have the marriage bond and license from Greene Co. for the marriage between Jacob W. Broyles and Mariah Reynolds on April 22, 1853. As I mentioned below they appear in the 1870 U.S. census living in Horse Creek. They are also in the 1860 U.S. Census in Greene TN (Roll 1252 Page 7) again living in Horse Creek. About a year ago I sent a GEDCOM file to both Steve Broyles and George Durman with the additional information I have on the family. You might want to check with them. 2. George W. Durman
    3. I'm still trying to contact this famous "cousin" of ours, in hopes we can get him to attend one of our Germanna Reunions, sooner or later. You can read about him here: http://us.imdb.com/Bio?Broyles+Jr.,+William (April 2002) Working on several high profile writing projects including the children's story "The Polar Express" and the Vietnam drama "Khe Sahn", both with Tom Hanks set to produce & star. And the western "Tom Harris" with Harrison Ford and Tom Hanks rumored for the lead. Trade mark of William Broyles, Jr.: A character in his screenplay is technologically dependant but is cast into a situation where he must rely on his instincts and intuition rather than his technical know-how (Cast Away, Apollo 13, Planet of the Apes). THIS IS BASED ON HIS EXPERIENCE AS A DOWNED VIETNAM FIGHTER PILOT. (He is no arm-chair, "Sunday- morning Quarterback"! He's been there! George) http://www.cjr.org/year/92/6/draft.asp Broyles, former editor-in-chief of Newsweek and California magazines, was also founding editor of Texas Monthly. A decorated Marine corps Vietnam veteran, he is the author of Brothers in arms: A journey from War to Peace, an account of his return to Vietnam in 1984. He was co- creator and executive consultant of the television series China Beach, and creator and executive producer of Under Cover, another series. http://www.library.swt.edu/swwc/archives/writers/broyles.html (More bio on William. See this one for his PICTURE!) http://film.onet.pl/8137,film.html (He was also a screenwriter for a Polish film, "Unfaithful", in 2002.) http://www.cinema.com/search/person_detail.phtml?ID=4256 (More bio on William, a decorated Marine veteran.) http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/w/q110903.html Quotes from William: "What has brought unique, irreplaceable me - out of all the possibilities of life-here, now, to this? Was all my youth-the paper route after school, the stolen moments in the back seats of borrowed cars, the football workouts, the cramming for finals-meant to end this way, dying in a muddy paddy?" " 'Why me?' That is the soldier's first question, asked each morning as the patrols go out and each evening as the night settles around the foxholes. " Too much about William! Aw, heck! I'm sorry. George

As a matter of fact, I have seen statements from you that refute your argument but I haven't reminded you of them because I thought it best to let sleeping dogs lie. If you have really had every linguistics course that is offered by any college, I will let the linguistics part of this die out. Linguistics doesn't apply to the question in my original note and you are the one who has introduced the non-issue of linguistics into the discussion. When you tell me that you have had every mathematics course there is to be had and have become so proficient in statistics that you can calculate the probability that there has never been a person from any place, at any time, who came to this country with the surname of BROYLES with such a small margin for error that the probability becomes a certainty, then I will ask you for a copy of your calculations and will point out your mistake to you, because there will be one. You can't prove a negative, George, and that is what you are trying to do. By the time you get through proving there CAN'T be a person named Broyles who decides to come to this country, the next man to step off the ship will be named John Broyles. Let's let this one die a belated death. Roy Patton
