Sarah is surely Sarah Jones, wife of Jeremiah Broyles. They moved from Greene Co. to Lincoln Co. around 1809, and he is found there in the 1820 census. But there are no further records of the family in Lincoln Co., so the question has always been, "what happened to Jeremiah and his family?" I had come to the conclusion that Jeremiah died c. 1825 and that his widow and children moved to Davidson Co. where son John is found in 1830. Not immediately handy to me are some Davidson Co. records regarding a Sarah Broyles, plus other records in Lincoln Co. that establish John as a son of Jeremiah, and seem to refer to a court case of some kind. The newspaper article now establishes the fact that Sarah murdered her husband. Undoubtedly she and the children had to leave the county. My info on Jeremiah from a few years ago can be found at: http://www.ultranet.com/~deeds/broyles/html/d0002/g0000079.htm#I63 "C. Y. 2. WINDOWS-FOR-DUMMIES Listowner
    3. I am pleased to announce that a new Mailing List has been started at Rootsweb! WINDOWS-FOR-DUMMIES This List is an outgrowth of two other Lists I manage, VIRUS-DISCUSSION and EUDORA-MAIL. Working with those two Lists, it became apparent that many users needed help with the basics of Windows BEFORE they could really understand how to use the Eudora email program, or how to use Anti-Virus programs. As it has turned out, on both the two Lists, the majority of email concerned how to use Windows, rather than being discussions of the topics of the Lists. Thus was born WINDOWS-FOR-DUMMIES. A note here: For our wonderful subscribers to VIRUS-DISCUSSION and EUDORA-MAIL, continue to post your email on these Lists when it pertains to the subjects of the Lists. If your question or reply has to do with Windows in general, please join the new List and start posting there. For subscribers to the other Lists I manage, I invite you to join us at WINDOWS-FOR-DUMMIES whenever you have ANY question or problem with Windows. Topics will be wide-ranging and ANY subject will be allowed, as long as it has to do with "how to" do so-and-so in Windows (or DOS, for that matter). There is already a List called COMPUTERS, but most of the time the discussions are about hardware, and not very much on software, especially Windows. It is very difficult to discuss hardware without getting into the workings of Windows, so we felt this new List was necessary. To subscribe: Send to: WINDOWS-FOR-DUMMIES-L-request@computers.rootsweb.com (for the -L, individual message, Mode) or Send to: WINDOWS-FOR-DUMMIES-D-request@computers.rootsweb.com (for the -D, Digest, Mode) BE SURE TO READ THE WELCOME MESSAGE!!!!! Be sure to SAVE it in your email program. If you ever need to know how to unsubscribe, or anything else about the List, keeping the Welcome Message is very important. So, welcome aboard. We hope to see lots of you on the List. Remember, ANY question or problem concerning Windows is welcome. (We hope very much that discussion of email programs, etc., on the VIRUS-DISCUSSION List will be moved to this new List.) Regards, SgtGeorge George W. 3. Elizabeth, I said a prayer for your daughter, and also for you and your entire family. May God Bless and Keep ALL those who are serving their country this Memorial Day, both at home and abroad. Just as our ancestors sacrificed to come to a new land, so do these wonderful young descendants sacrifice today to KEEP this country free for all. PEACE is not a God-given right, it MUST be earned! There is a BROYLES descendant, out on the front lines, I would like you to remember in prayer. That descendant, is Elizabeth Youngberg, my daughter. She is a Chaplain in the United States Army in an unaccompanied tour in Korea. In that she is up for Major this year, there is rumor that she be assigned another year in Korea, unaccompanied. She is as close to the DMZ as they allow a chaplain. As I write this I have tears in my eyes and lump in my throat. Yet at the same time I have peace, in my heart, knowing that she is where God would have her be, serving her God and Country. She may never be a legend but if a war broke out tomorrow she would be among the first to volunteer to go wherever that might be. If you are related to her, stand up and be proud. 2. Jim Jackson
    3. If this story is not completely factual, I'm sure many of us can recall individuals who fit the description of this little old lady. At LaGrange College (LaGrange, GA) in the early 60's, when I was a student, there was just such a little old lady who had determined to get her degree at about the same age as the one in the story. She was a member of the Calloway family (Calloway Mills, Calloway Foundation etc.) and lived in a terribly expensive house with a staff of housekeepers, gardeners and chauffeurs but was not happy that she had never received her college degree. Although the story's ending is different from Mrs. Calloway's the essence is the same. I think of her often and the inspiration she generated for us "normal aged" students. Thanks for sharing with us. 1. [BROYLES] Living, While Growing Older
    2. George W. Durman
    3. Please excuse this off-topic post (and from the Listowner at that!). It was so touching, I thought you should read it. SgtGeorge *************** LIVING WHILE GROWING OLDER The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around, when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?" I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!", and she gave me a giant squeeze. "Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?", I asked. She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel." "No, seriously," I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!", she told me. After class we walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine", as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon, and easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up, and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet, and I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three-by-five cards on the floor. Frustrated, and a little embarrassed, she leaned into the microphone and simply said, "I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know." As we laughed she cleared her throat and began: "We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. "There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success: "You have to laugh and find humor every day. "You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! "There is a huge difference between growing OLDER and growing UP. If you are nineteen years old, and lie in bed for one full year, and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up, by always finding the opportunity in change. "Have no regrets. We elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did NOT do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets." She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose". She challenged each of us to study the lyrics, and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation, Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught, by example, that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. If you read this, please send this peaceful word of advice to your friends and family. We send these words in loving memory of ROSE. *************** [This might be one of those "fake" stories that wend their way through the Net/Web, but wouldn't you like to think that it is "real"? As we go about our genealogy pursuits, we often run into ancestors who were exactly like Rose. My grandmother, Nora (WILKINSON) BROYLES, never attended college, and never spoke at a college banquet, but she inspired not only all her descendants, but her entire community, with her wisdom, compassion, and just general common sense. She died on her birthday, at the age of 100 years. "Rose" reminds me of my "Mamaw", and I send this as a tribute to both of them.] SgtGeorge

I just tonight read your e-mail about Broyles graves in Macon County. My Margaret Broyles was in Macon County when her first husband died. He is Charles S. Turley who died 17 July 1870. The Turley family was mostly down in Ozark County. He could be buried near some Broyles in Macon County. It is a long shot, but please take note if you see a the Turley name. They had a little son Jacob R Turley who died the following Jan 27, 1871. He may also be buried somewhere in Macon County. For the record Margaret Ann Broyles was the daughter of Reese Bayles Broyles and his first wife Jane Jackson. Margaret Ann is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery, Viola, Arkansas (a few miles south of Ozark County Missouri).

    1. [BROYLES] Simeon BROYLES Reunion in Washington Co., TN in September
    2. George W. Durman
    3. Folks, things have finally been firmed up and here is the information sent to me by my uncle, Glenn D. BROYLES (my mother's brother): "The Simeon Broyles reunion will be Sept. 10. On Sept. 9, there will be hot dogs and singing in the afternoon, and a tour of the old Simeon Broyles home place. Then, on Sunday, we will have morning services at the Philadelphia Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and lunch in the pavilion. Please bring food. To get to the Philadelphia Cumberland Presbyterian church, take Hwy. 107 out of Greeneville, TN, to the Washington Co. line. Turn left one half mile past the county line. In about a mile, you'll come to a crossroads. Looking directly ahead, you will see two churches. The nearest is a brick church and is the United Presbyterian Church. A little further back, you will see a white wooden church; that's the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Hope to see a lot of people. Please reply." We need to know how many people to expect, so PLEASE let me know sometime between now and about the middle of August. Remember, this is not restricted to those with the name BROYLES; it is for all who can trace their ancestry back to Washington and Greene Counties, who have family ties with these the family. Many, many of the Germanna families were/are represented in these two counties, and most of them have ties to the two families. I hesitate to name the families who intermarried, lest I leave some out, but I know that the following lines are represented: WILHOIT/WILHITE YAGER/YEAGER BROWN CRIM/CRUM CUPP/COPP FOX PAINTER WADDELL LOVETTE KEEBLER MARTIN SNAPP FELLERS/FILLERS/G'FELLERS DOAK (And probably many others) Up until this year, the reunion has focused on the descendants of Simeon BROYLES, who is the ancestor of MOST of the BROYLES families now residing in the two counties; however, with the advent of the Internet/Web, it has become apparent that there are many peripheral lines that are just as related. Across the Nolachuckey River, near present day Limestone, another branch, the Adam BROYLES line, settled, and they were close cousins of Simeon. Then, there's the BRILES line, from Conrad BRILES, who settled in NC. They are all cousins, and there were some "cousin marriages" between the BRILES and BROYLES branches. Here's a short descendant tree down to Simeon. Many of you will find one of your ancestors here: Johannes BREYHEL (John BROYLES) Hans Jacob BROYLES Jacob BROYLES James BROYLES Simeon BROYLES Let's keep in touch on this. It would be great to have a large turnout of out-of-the-area cousins for this reunion. If your BROYLES ancestors trace back to East Tennessee, you are very close relatives, and if not, you're still "distant cousins". When you reply, please send to my personal email address so we won't clutter up the Lists: sgtgeorg@concentric.net Looking forward to seeing you in September, SgtGeorge George W. 1. [BROYLES] ABCNEWS.com : Geneticist: Seven Major European 'Families'
    2. George W. Durman
    3. I thought some of you might enjoy reading this newscast from ABCNEWS on April 21st. Here's the gist: April 21 — It may be the world’s largest known family tree. Researchers from Oxford University in Oxford, England, have identified seven ancestral matriarchal groups from which all Europeans appear to be descended. These maternal clans form the root of a family tree that has sprouted millions of individuals. Every European, according to the study, can trace his or her evolutionary history back to the seven ancestral mother groups, also referred to as the Seven Daughters of Eve. The researchers, who both discovered and formulated the genetic groupings, say these women would have lived between 8,000 to 45,000 years ago. 2. Ancestors of Dorthea Crisler Generation No. 1 1. Dorthea Crisler, born Abt. 1735 in Orange Co, VA; died in Washington Co, TN. She was the daughter of 2. Theobold (Howatt) Devald Christler and 3. Rosina Garr. She married (1) Nicholas Broyles Bef. 1757. He was born 1730 in Spotsylvania Co, VA, and died 08-September-1814 in Washington Co, TN. He was the son of Hans Jacob A Broyles and Maria Catherine Fleischman. Notes for Nicholas Broyles: 1. SOURCE: Page 30-31-32, Keith's Typescript With Additions, published by John K. Broyles, Sr. 302 Woodland Hills Road, Clinton, Tennessee 37716-5934 (copies still avaiable, cost about $60.00) 7. Nicholas Broyles (son of Jacob Broyles, 2) was born in Virginia about 1730, died in Washington Co.,Tenn., shortly before Sept. 8, 1814. He married Dorothea Christler, daughter of Deobold Christler, before 1757. Deobold Christler (first name given variously as Theobolt, Tevolt, and even as Fawatt) made will in Culpeper Co., Va. Feb. 20, 1776 probated Nov. 18, 1776, in which he mentions daughter Dortha Broyles. He married Rosina Garr and their many descendants should have been in The Garr Genealogy but were overlooked. The author evidently missed the will of Deobald (whose name he gives .as Fawatt) Christler, giving ten children whose names he had received by tradition but with no Dorothy. The will referred to above is ample proof that he had a daughter Dorothy Christler who married Nicholas Broyles. Nicholas Breil and wife Dorothea, one or the other, acted as sponsor at the baptism of all the children of Wilhelm Zimerman (same as Carpenter) and wife Mary, who was the daughter of Adam Wilhite and wife Catherine Broyles (5) . Dorothea Breilin also acted as sponsor at the baptisms of several children of Adam Christler (1769-1778). The births of eight of the children of Nicholas Broyles are recorded in the Hebron Birth Register and a Christler acted as sponsor at the baptisms of seven of them. Nicolus Breils was sponsor in 1777 for child of Anthony and Elizabeth Perry. In Culpeper Co., Va. on Sept. 28, 1782 Nicholas Broyle and wife Dolly sold land to Francis Major, both making their marks. This date indicates the time of their departure to east Tennessee. Nicholas Broyle on May, 15, 1780 (1781) entered 1400 acres in Kentucky on Green River but he probably never followed up his claim. In Washington Co., Tenn., Aug. 2, 1788 Nicholas Broyles bought of Joseph Bullar 200 acres on the Little Limestone; likewise on the same day and from the same party he bought 640 acres on theEnorthh side of Nolachuckey River at the mouth of Little Limestone. Both deeds were witnessed by Jno. McMacken and Conrod Wilhoite. This land can be precisely located. It lay in the western-most part of Washington County and included the present villaage of Broylesville, which however was probably named for a later Broyles. On Aug. 5, 1788 Nicholas Broiles and wife Dorothy (both make marks) sold in two separate deeds to Sirus (thus in one deed but Cirus in the other) Broiles, first, one tract of 100 acres lying on the north side of Nolachuckey on Little Limestone; second, a tract of 320 acres on the north side of Nolachuckey beginning near the mouth of Little Limestone. In 1789 Nicholas Broyles received grant of 100 acres on the west side of Little Limestone. On Feb. 15, 1791 Nicholas Broils sold to Solomon Yeager for natural love and affection to said Solomon Yeager and wife Elizabeth 100 acres at the mouth of Little Limestone. Samuel Broils (he was son of Cyrus) was one of the witnesses. On same day Nichlas Broils sold to Solomon Yeager 100 acres lying on west side of Little Limestone. On Sept. 17, 1797 Nicholas Broyles sold to son Abraham Broyles land on Little Limestone, joining Cyrus Broyles. The deed was witnessed by Tobias Broils and Daniel Broils (both sons of Cyrus). On Sept. 19, 1797 Nicholas Broyles sold to the heirs of Rheuben Broyles for affection 129 acres joining Cyrus Broyles, James Grimes, John McAllister, and Solomon Yeager, along said Yeager's line to Abraham Broyles's line, with the reservation that the heirs of Rheuben Broyles allow Nicholas Broyles and wife Dorothy the use of the part on the north side of Onion Branch. The deed was witnessed by Daniel Broyles and Abraham Broyle. This is the last mention found of Dorothy Broyles. On Aug. 5, 1806 Nicholas Broyle sold to Abraham Broyles one negro girl. Samuel Broyles and Thomas Broyle, being the witnesses; and on Sept. 15, 1806 Nicholas Broyle sold to Sollomon Yeager one negro girl, Samuel Broyle and John Stout being the witnesses. The inventory of Nicholas Broyles was presented to the Washington County Court, November 1814 and included a record of the sale of his property made on Sept. 8, 1814. The total valuation was $1306.27. There were many buyers among whom were Samuel Broyles, Adam Broyles, Henry Glaze, Samuel Stonecypher, Adam Harmon, and Cornelius Broyles. The births of the children of Nicholas Broyles and . his wife Dorothea are recorded in the Hebron Birth Register, with one exception. The name Reuben Broyles fails to appear. Between Maria, born 1766, and Rosina, born 1770 there is room for another child and Reuben probably belonged here and was omitted through some accident. If he does not belong here we shall have to place him before 1757. That he was the son of Nicholas is proved by tradition and by the deed of Sept. 19, 1797, cited above. Among the sponsors at the christenings of Nicholas Broyles's children the names of John Wayland and Catharine Wayland appear frequently. Catharine Wayland was the sistet of Nicholas Broyles. Michael Gaar and Elizabetha Gaar also act as sponsors. She was the daughter of Adam Wilhite who married Catharine Broyles (4). Wilhelm Ziminerman (once) and Maria Zimmerman (six times) act as sponsors for Nicholas Broyles's children. She also was daughter of Adam and Catharine Broyles Wilhite. Nicholas Broyles had 9 children, 3 sons and 6 daughters. Nc descendants of his son Daniel have been found. His son Reuben married and had 4 daughters, no sons. So the known descendants of Nicholas by direct male line all come from his son Abraham. Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas, married Solomon Yeager, and it is believed that his daughter Sarah married Thomas Tipton. Three daughters are unaccounted for. They may have married east Tennessee men and left issue. Nicholas Broyies (7) and wife Dorothea Christler had issue: 39. i. Daniel Broyles, born Aug. 18, 1757. No certain record of him has been found in Tennessee. The Daniel in the Tennessee records was the son of Cyrus Broyles. Daniel, son of Nicholas, may not have gone to Tennessee. He is probably identical with the Daniel Broy] confirmed at Hebron Church, Apr. 7 (Easter), 1776: who signed petitior June 5, 1779; and was taxed for personal proberty, 1783, Culpeper Co., Va. Possibly he is identical with the'Daniel Broyles who appears ir the Mercer Co., Ky records. 1816, which Daniel is not otherwise accounted for. 40. II. Elizabeth Broyles. 41. III Abraham Broyles. 42 IV Sara Broyles. 43. v Maria Broyles, born July 17, 1766. 44. vi Reuben Broyles. 45. vii Rosina Broyles, born Oct. 23, 1770 46. viii Phebe Broyles, born July 30, 1773. See Samuel Broyles (50) 47. ix Lea Broyles. born May 20. 1775. As Leann Broyles she married William McGhee, Sept. 2, 1793, Washington Co., Tenn. with Reuben Broyles as bondsman.
