    1. [BROYLES] Map of 2nd Colony Villages in Germany
    2. George W. Durman
    3. John Blankenbaker sent me a map of the area in Germany, in which several of the villages are located, from which some of the Germanna 2 colonists immigrated. I have posted the map and you may view it on the web site. (BEWARE, due to having to keep the size and resolution high in order to have a readable map, the file is large; it will take a couple of minutes to load in your web browser, providing you're using a 56K modem.) If your ancestors come from any of the following villages, you can see them on this map: Bonfeld Bönnigheim Botemheim Gemmingen Groß Sachsenheim Neuenbürg Oberderdingen Ötisheim Schwaigern Sinsheim Stetten am Heuchelberg Sulzfeld Zaberfield I have large, bright red numbers to the map, corresponding with the order of the above villages, so it should be easy to find your particular village. You can access this map by going to John's "Germany-Photos" page at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/johnsgermnotes/germany-photos.html and clicking on the appropriate link, or, you can go directly to the page at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/johnsgermnotes/2ndcolonymap.html Note to John: I KNOW I'm probably biting off more than I can chew, but if you want to send maps of other areas of Germany, in which are located the villages of the 1st Colony, and/or the villages that you are sending photos for, LET ME HAVE THEM! (Ye Gads! I'm three villages behind right now for the Photos!) SgtGeorge

    3. 1) Web Pages for photos that John and Eleanor made while in Germany: I have finished the pages for the villages of Oberfischbach, Illenschwang, and Ötisheim. There are several ways you can access them: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/index.html (and click the green German-Photos button on the left side of the page) http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/johnsgermnotes/germany-photos.html (this takes you to the Index of villages) Please check them out and let me know if there are any problems with links, format, spelling, typos, etc. John will be sending more pictures for other villages, and possibly more for the same villages. John, if you have other pictures of various scenes in the villages, please send them too. It doesn't matter what the subject. 2) I have changed the Famous Folks page for BROYLES/BRILES descendants to make it a GERMANNA Famous Folks page. If you are, or know of, a "famous" GERMANNA descendant, let us have the story and we'll post it. You can check out the page at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/famous.html Or, access it from the home page at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~george/index.html And click on the green Famous Folks button on the left side of the page. Please take a look and send in your contributions. Thanks, SgtGeorge Listowner

I agree with George. In the 30 some odd years I've been researching the Broyles family I have never heard Jacob as Jacob Adam. I would also like to see proof of this. Ken Broyles

First of all in our family Heritage Book we have Zachariah Broyles, which is the son of Jacob Adam Broil (Hans Jacob as yall refer to him), to be the father of Michael Broyles that was married to Margret Newberry. When looking at the family line on the net, it looks like maybe his father was Michael Broyles. Can anyone help clear this problem up for me? Also we have always been told that Michael and Margret were the ones to change the name to Broyles??? Thank you for any help you can give me! Stacie Broyles Branson **************END OF ORIGINAL MESSAGE TEXT************** Hi Stacie. This is the second email I have received this week that refers to "Hans Jacob BROYLES" as "Jacob Adam BROIL". I haven't seen this reference in a long, long time. I just wonder, where, and with what proof, this person EVER was identified as "Jacob Adam". Does ANYONE know of a verifiable primary source document to back this up? I'm also curious as to the source of "Michael and Margret were the ones to change the name to BROYLES". Back years and years ago, I did see references to Hans Jacob as Jacob Adam, but, at the time, the "source" was based on family lore, or family oral history, and was never proven. If his name WAS Jacob Adam, I would LOVE to get a copy of the source(s) and to change all the data I have; however, knowing a little about German naming traditions, "Hans Jacob" and "Jacob Adam" just do not start to equal one another. The fellow's father was Johannes BREYHEL (BREHEL, or however it was spelled in various documents). At that time, sons were "usually" give a "first" name of their father, with a "second" name of their own. They were NEVER known by their "first" name, but by their "second". Thus, Johannes BREYHEL, if following tradition, would have named his two sons "Johann Jacob" and "Johann Conrad". Johann or Johan or Johannes was, informally, shortened to "Hans". Thus, the person in question may have become known as "Hans Jacob" in America, maybe because of the English tradition of using first names, or, maybe, to differentiate him from his son "Jacob". I've always "suspected" that Conrad's name was really "Johann Conrad", but no one has EVER found a source document to prove this. I just wish we could find out where this "Jacob Adam" found its way into the genealogy records. It was several generations down in history before the name "Adam" was first used in the BROYLES family. It certainly had no precedence, that we know of, in Germany, or in the early generations in America. I'm not casting aspersions, just trying to find out, once and for all, where the "Adam" came from, and if there is any actual proof. SgtGeorge

The English did that in trying to spell the German name. Just what do you need on this family. I have alot on them. Ken Broyles jkbroyles@icx.net
