Author: JasonEdwards74 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brownlow/129.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi there! I thought I would clear up a few things concerning the Brownlow family and their connections. I will start with your direct line: George M. Brownlow was born March 22, 1871. I have seen other descendants say the M. stands for Milton. His parents were Joseph Brownlow and Francis Kellow. Joseph Brownlow was born in Ireland in February 1833 (Per 1900 census). He seems to have come from Ireland to Canada in about 1847. Some census information states that he was born in Canada. He may have been the Joseph Brownlow who immigrated at Quebec in 1847 with parents William and Sarah. I have been unable to find him on the 1860 census, but he is said to have married Frances Lucinda Kellow in 1859 in LaCrosse County, Wisconsin. He enlisted as a private in Co. C, 49th Wisconsin Infantry on February 18, 1865, and was mustered out on November 1, 1865. He filed for a pension in Nebraska on August 4, 1882, and his widow applied for a pension on July 28, 1913, in Washington. He was listed on the 1870 census in LaCrosse County. By 1880, he had moved to Platte County, Nebraska, where he was on the census. In 1885 and 1900 he was on the census in Holt County, Nebraska, and in 1910 was in Yakima County, Washington. He died on July 7, 1913, in Yakima County, Washington. (Please note that there was another Joseph Brownlow in Wisconsin who is sometimes confused with your Joseph. This other Joseph was a son of Charles Brownlow and Sophia Stocks and was born in Lincolnshire, England.) For what it is worth, the one descendant of Joseph Brownlow and Frances Kellow who has participated in the Brownlow DNA study did not match the Southern Brownlows. They did, however, match several Brownlees. Your Joseph is s different person than Joseph B. F. Brownlow, son of George Brownlow of Giles County, Tennessee. Joseph B. F. Brownlow seems to have died unmarried. The last record of him I have been able to find is when he enlisted in Co. K, 1st Tennessee Infantry (Confederate). He does not appear on the 1870 (or later) census and may have died in the Civil War. His father was George Brownlow c.1801 in Chatham County, North Carolina. George Brownlow died in Giles County, Tennessee, in 1855. The father of George Brownlow was James Brownlow (c.1765-c.1817). James Brownlow was born c.1765 in County Armagh, Ireland. He arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, with his parents William and Jane Brownlow in 1767. He married Mary, who is said to have been a Sanders/Saunders, in about 1790. They moved, first to Kentucky before 1809, and then to Giles County, Tennessee, where James died before 1820. He is not the same person as the James Brownlow, son of John Brownlow of Cross Creek in Cumberland County, North Carolina. They were, in fact, first cousins. This other James was born about 1767 to John Brownlow and Sarah Council. There is an abundant amount of incorrect information out there concerning this particular John Brownlow. (For clarification about him, see the posting by Betty Jo Evans in this message board dated May 9, 2013.) I hope this has helped clear up some of the confusion. It gets complicated with so many James, Joseph, and John Brownlows. If you have any questions, let me know! But do know that NOT all Brownlows in the US descend from James and Kate. Also, James Brownlow b, 1695 - d. 1740 from County Armagh was not the father of James Brownlow of James and Kate. All of his children were connected with the NC Brownlow's and to date there is no documentation that has been found to connect the two lines, or in other words, the Tennessee and the North Carolina Brownlow's. Even in my Brownlow dna study at Family Tree DNA, we have yet to find a comparable line with James and Kate. All of this James children are accounted for in NC with the exception of his oldest daughter, Elizabeth and we do not know what happened to her. Because of the connection with the Brownlow family in Fredericksburg, and the name Alexander, I think it would potentially be fruitful to explore that connection further. My great grandmother Mary Brownlow was the daughter of Henry Brownlow and Mary Jane McLeod. I discovered that Henry Brownlow died at the age of 40. I have not found any info to say how he died but I discovered that he worked at a quarry. Mary Jane had a daughter after Henry's death and then, a few years later, married Nelson Warren. Nelson was 12 years younger than her. I have not been able to found too much info on John Brownlow and Ann England. There is a great website called "Tighsolas" with pictures and letters of Margaret McLeod Nicholson (sister of Mary Jane Brownlow) family. I have been researchin on ancestry.com and connecting on message boards for the past 10 years. I recently discovered that Mary Boleyn is my 14th great grandmother through the Ball line.
