Hi, I have been on this list for a while just hoping something would come up about my gg-grandfather. James Brownlow Russell born abt 1810 in NC, SC , or maybe Georgia. By his middle name being Brownlow I am thinking somewhere is his family there had to be a Brownlow. Maybe his mothers maiden name or maybe his grandmothers. Known places my James lived was Coosa County Ala. 1850 Ala. . Texas between 1850 and 1860 by 1860 he was on the Izard Co. Arkansas Census and then by the 1870 census he was on the Pope Co. Arkansas Census. and he died there in 1875 . He was married to Nancy Hill? or Attaway? she was born 1813 in Tn. she died in Pope Co. Arkansas too in 1886. they had 17 children . He married her sometime before 1841 when their first child, James A. Brownlow was born. Jacob N. born in 1842, Nancy Ann born in 1845 and Sarah born in 1847. Soon after this birth she evidently died since Alexander married Nancy Walters in August of 1847. They had three more children.. Alexander was the younger brother of William Gannaway Brownlow who was the first governor of Tn after reconstruction. More on this family can be seen on the Gannaway/Wright web page.

After seeing the listing for Brownlow I had to list my finding. My Grandfather's history is scarce. His name was William Brown, Called Willie Brown. His father & mother were John & Mary.?. He had brothers, Franklin, James & possibly Tom & George, & possibly a sister or two. His mother died when he was about 5 years old. He ran away from home age 9 or 12 years. History is scarce. Recently I was looking through things my mother left me & found a post card to: Willie Brownlow. I can't figure this out as I'm sure of his Uncles names, Meletous Brown, Hugh Brown, Cicero Brown, & Alonzo Brown. Now I am wonderring why this post card is to Willie Brownlow. >From what I can tell they are the Brown's that came from Ky. & Tn, possibly with Daniel Boone's people, but not sure of this tale. Has anyone done research on where all the kids went when the parents died? The only thing I hve found is a comment that they were all sent to other relatives or apprenticed out when they became orphans. I am actually looking for the whereabouts of William's younger brother, Alexander and where he grew up. Hoping that will give me a clue as to who he married in 1840 and where the documents might be found. He died while living in Johnson City, Tn. but I don't find any record of him anywhere before 1847 in that area. Thanks, Pam

I haven't posted to this list in awhile and haven't received any posts so I wonder if I'm the only one on it....no matter. I am trying to find information on the first wife of Alexander Brownlow. He was the son of Catherine Gannaway and Joseph Brownlow and the brother of William Gannaway Brownlow, the Gov. of Tenn. at one time. They were married in or about 1840 and lived in Washington Co. Tenn. In Aug.,1847, he married his second wife, Nancy Walters. The first wife produced 4 children with Alexander; James A. Brownlow (b.1841) Jacob N. Brownlow (b. 1842) Nancy Ann Brownlow (1846-1912) married William H. Keyes Sarah Brownlow (b.1847) The second wife had atleast 2 more children by Alexander and when she died he married a Mary Jones in 1883. He died in 1886 in Johnson City, Tenn.
