    3. A trip to Scotland 2000 ------ of course. I have enjoyed reading the stories people are relating about their own visits. My husband and I have very close friends who live in Edinburgh. We see them either here or there about every other year. I've been to Strathaven twice. The last time on a very rainy day (normal in Scotland) my friend, Maggie, and I made arrangements to spend the day in Strathaven while our husbands were working. We drove into town and stopped at the visitor's bureau to ask where the Avondale Castle was located. To our embarrassment, the clerk pointed out the window where the castle was within spitting distance. We were so interested in parking and going into the visitor's bureau, we didn't even look around us. I came away with several small books about Strathaven - which is pronounced Straven. The Scotish and British love to leave out at least half of the word in pronounciation just to confuse us. As though we don't have enough trouble understanding their accent. The castle is actually in ruins and not open for touring. I did take several pictures however. We wanted to go to the museum but it has very limited hours so decided to go to lunch first. I wonder if it was the same tea room Betty went to. At any rate, we had a very nice lunch and drive around Strathaven until the museum opened. The museum is quite small consisting of the entry and two small rooms. Most of it is completely devoted to our battle and our family. The flag was displayed on the wall and I wanted to take a picture. Unfortunately, the curator noticed my camera and told me pictures were not allowed. She was afraid someone would write a book and use the pictures in the book. Like no book on Brownlees has been written. Of course, since I was the only one there besides my friend, "someone" meant me. At any rate I did make a drawing of the flag. We then went to a friend of Maggie's for tea. Maggie and her friend are neighbors at their vacation homes on the island of Minorca. That was quite enjoyable to actually be in the home of a Strathaven resident. My daughter-in-law is an artist and has reproduced (from a combination of my pictures, old postcards and books I brought back) a watercolor of Avondale Castle which I treasure. I didn't try to visit Torfoot after such a full day but.........that's what's 2000 is for. Right? Edinburgh is a lovely city with lots of nice places to stay and things to do. Glasgow is not quite so nice but does have a lot of places to stay and things to do. They are both approximately the same distance from Strathaven. I'll be happy to help with any arrangements within my expertise.
