This is truly going to be an amazing year for genealogy - I feel it in my bones. The new Rootsweb Archives has opened up a great oportunity for research and people connecting their families AND as proof of what happened today - people are joining our lists faster than ever before (except in the very beginning). Today I had 3 people inquire about the Cardwell list - WOW All have family lines I have seen us discuss. Boy are they in for some fun. They all found my e-mail address through Rootsweb. Hmmmmmm. Keep up the good work - network network network. The more we look the more we see. :) Thanks Kay

I am looking for information on the Brownlee family from Owen Sound, Ontario. In an obituary in 1928 for William A. Birtch of St. Marys, Ontario it mentioned that his eldest daughter, Ellenor(nickname-Nora?), was married to Major Herbert Brownlee from Owen Sound. From the Owen Sound directory in the 1940's it would appear that his full name may have been James Herbert. Also, living at the same address, were what appear to be two of his children, Donald D. and James A. The last entry for Herbert appears to have been in 1964, by then his children all appear to have left Owen Sound. Any help in contacting a member of this family, or any other information would be greatly appreciated. Ken Dworschak Ottawa, Ontario
I can check these names against the Brownlee News Group list you sent me earlier, Kay. The Brownlees seem to be coming out of the wood work. so to speak, lately. I listed the Brownlee home page on Dick Eastman's list and have had several responses from there. His must be a very popular newsletter. This is exciting that its growing so fast. Betty
Here is the list for December on Rootsweb surname search - are all of these people part of our group? Does anyone have time to check? I wish I did but I don't right now. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am seeking the ancestors and (especially) descendants of Katherine "Kit" BROWNLEE who married George Lawrence Thompson (my grandfather's brother). George and Katherine lived in (Canton Twp) Washington Co., PA. George was the son of Irvin and Delia (Laurrell) Thompson of Washington, PA. You can visit my webpage at: http://members.aol.com/Clair2nd/journey.html for more info......my Thompson outline is there in searchable format. Thanks for your attention and Good Hunting. Happy Holidays to all. Clair John "Bill" Thompson, Sr Lincoln Park, MI
I was out of service and lost at least the last three days mail If anyone wrote please resubmit your letters Thank you and I apologize for any inconvenience. Larry McCool in Calgary, Alberta Canada Larry McCool [email protected]
Somebody in this group is not following directions. Or is pulling a joke on me. Please people - if you are networking and inviting people to join our group - IT IS NOT A NEWSLETTER! I am not sending out anything in the snail mail. I had 3 new people today ask me for a newsletter. I don't have time to play games. Give the proper directions to people for subscribing - it was in your welcome letter. Thanks Kay
OK folks alittle reminder. While networking around the internet and letting people know there is a Brownlee list PLEASE give them the proper instructions for subscribing. Although I am "usually" on top of my mail and can subscribe someone if they ask, it is important to let people know the correct proceedure. :) To subscribe to the Brownlee Rootsweb genealogy group (not a newletter) (I keep getting messages from people asking me when I am sending them a newsletter ??????) following the following instructions: subscribe in mail mode by sending a message to [email protected] that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If you prefer digest mode, you should send the command instead to [email protected] Thanks everyone! Kay
I'm at a loss at where to begin, so let's begin with what I know (which ain't much). My g-g-grandfather John Daniel Brownley was born 9\21\1844 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, "of Scotch parents." He moved with his parents to Logan County, Ohio in 1848. He married Mary F. Rea 3\22\1866. They moved to Carroll County, Missouri in 1869 and settled around Mandeville. Reared eight children. Wife died 2\20\1912. He moved to Wichita, KS for 3 years, then Franklin, TN until he moved to College Place, WA in 1918. Married Mrs. Georgina V. Reader 6\22\1919, and she died in 1931. He died in College Place, WA 10\15\1938. A Civil War veteran, he was a member of Company K 57 Ohio V.V.F., enlisting on 11\13 1861. Was captured in Atlanta 7\22\1864. A brother Alex was taken prisoner at the same time. Both sent to Andersonville, GA prison camp. Was released in a prisoner exchange 9\21\1864. Was discharged in Little Rock, AR 8\11\1865. Attended the 54th National Emcampment of the Union Ex-Prisoners of War in Indianapolis in 1920 and Attended the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in June\July 1938. Before this becomes too long-winded, My problem is I've reached back as far as my resources can go. Mrs. Rudolph's e-mail was lake a light in the night. There are a couple of sources here in Carrolton, MO which show the last name to be "lee" but virtually everything else is "ley" My hope is someone will be able to connect the Ohio date of birth and location to one of their family. I've ranted on long enough, but it is so exciting to actually find other Brownley's out there, because there are precious few here in Carroll County. Your help is appreciated, Alvin Brownley [email protected]

Listmembers, EXCITING NEWS!!!! Karen and Brian at RootsWeb have our searchable archives ready!! Go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and HAVE FUN!!!!! If you have a problem making them work, post to me. I just checked them, and they are WONDERFUL!!! Kay Cardwell-Davis
OK folks the archiving is about ready for take off. I have been asked to not announce the archiving URL until we get the big OK BUT. . . .I went to the URL to see how it works and it will be great! May I please take this time to post an opinion - I don't do this very often to the list but this one is important. Our lists are valuable to us. We take pride in our work and the words that we write, hopefully. Any message you send to "the group" WILL BE ARCHIVED. Any message you send to an individual or individuals WILL NOT. Watch what you do when you press the return key and make sure who you want to send a message to. The other point is this If you are sending a message that gives names and dates etc. . please please please make a note to say somewhere that the material is FACTUAL or is SPECUALIVE based on what info you have of that date. There will be people down the road who were not part of our list when the original message was sent out and they might not read the entire line of messages. They will read a portion of the message and think it is "the truth" written in stone. Use Sources or something - this could end up being a dissaster if we don't take care of it now. There is nothing we can do about the old archived messages but we can watch what we do in the future. Everyone knows what it is like to take a wrong turn down the goose chase road to nowhere. :) Keep up the good work and I will let you know when the archives are reading for searches. BTW - if you have found any URL's lately you would love share - 'tis the season. Stay warm and cozy. Thanks a bunch Kay
There has been a big discussion going on about a genealogy stamp. If you have seen this note from another list - please delete - if not please read - and call or write if you feel it is worth it. Kay --------------------------------------- It takes 3 years to get a stamp issued so we need to get busy and call the 1-800-stamp24 or write to the address below. Genealogy meets all the criteria for a stamp. I believe we just need enough pressure to make it happen, so pass it along and let us generate a landslide of pressure to get one of our passions recognized. EMail to US Postal Service: [email protected] >From the US Postal Service Pages: http://www.usps.gov/ Ideas for stamps subjects that meet the criteria may be addressed to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, c/o Stamp Management, U.S. Postal Service, 475 L'Enfant Plaza, SW, Room 4474EB, Washington, DC 20260-6756. Subjects suggestions should be submitted at least three years in advance of the proposed date of issue to allow sufficient time for consideration and for design and production if the subject is approved. The selection of subjects for U.S. postage stamps and stationery is a difficult task, since only a limited number of new commemorative items can be issued annually. To help in the selection process, the Postmaster General established the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) over 30 years ago to recommend subjects and designs. Members are appointed to the Committee by the Postmaster General. They reflect a wide range of educational, artistic, historical and professional expertise. Once a subject is approved, the Postal Service relies, to a great extent, on the design coordinators for the Advisory Committee in selecting artists to execute the designs. Stamp designing is an unusual art form requiring exacting skill in portraying a subject within very small dimensions. Due to the demands of stamp design and reproduction requirements, it is our policy not to review nor accept unsolicited artwork. -----Original Message----- From: theresa Carhart <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, December 05, 1997 11:25 PM Subject: Genealogy stamp >Hi rooters, > > I found out today that the U.S. post office has no genealogy stamp, >so I ask how we(Genealogist) could request one be designed and they told me >to call this number, I feel, they have stamps on everything and everyone, >but genealogy. I have recently been introduced to the Brownlee Newsletter. My husband's great-grandmother was Mary Brownlie. She was born 10 Feb 1824 and married William Rigg on 24 July 1845 in Long Grove, Iowa. I believe that she is the daughter of one of the four Brownlie brothers, William, Robert, James and Alexander, who settled Long Grove and and were founding fathers of the Long Grove Disciples of Christ Church. They are the sons of Christian Bryce and Alexander Brownlie of Schotts, Lanark, Scotland. Can someone please help me connect Mary to the correct family? Thanks. Kate Albertson
