Ted, I came across an old email that you sent (dated 6/11/97) that I had meant to chase up. You mentioned that you were looking for an Andrew Jackson Brownlee, who migrated to Australia. You didn'y supply any details apart from being the son of James Brownlee and Eleanor Finical. Have you any dates. His age. What period 1800's/1900's?. I do obviously have quite a few Australian records having done research here for about 30years. Let me know as much as you know and I'll see what I can do. Regards Ian Brownlee PS If there is anyone else out there that is after Australian info, please don't hesitate to ask.
Writing in response to Kay's note. I am one of the newest of the *79* thanks to Betty. I am part of the Torfoot Brownlees that has grown through Washington Co., PA. I think that one of the purposes of maintaining our group is to support each others' ideas and to organize our interests and efforts. To that end, I believe that organizing a year 2000 trip would be outstanding. And now is the time to begin organizing such a trip. Trip schedule, accomodations, local arrangements, media coverage, and attendees all take considerable effort to coordinate. I am willing to stand up and volunteer my time to organize or assist in the organization of such an event. Is there anyone else with planning experience? I look forward to hearing from you all. Mark Bownlee
I went to Scotland in April 1996 and visited Torfoot Farm. Kay has asked me to share a little of my experiences with the rest of you, so here goes. I know some of you have heard this story before, so bear with me. I went to England and Scotland with a cousin who was not particularly interested in family history. She had been to England before, but this was my first trip, so she was my guide. I followed her lead except that I insisted the one thing I definitely wanted to do was to see if we could find Torfoot Farm. She did get excited about visiting Torfoot where our ancestors had lived. Neither of us having the nerve to drive in the British Isles, we took a bus from Glasgow to Hamilton to Strathaven (transportation is very good over there). We arrived early in the morning and checked into a Bed and Breakfast in a lovely old home which we later found out had been built by a Brownlee. We walked over to a nearby tea room for breakfast and struck up a conversation with a lady sitting at the next table. During the course of the conversation we of course mentioned Torfoot. She was fairly new to the area and didn't know about it. However, a group of elderly ladies sitting nearby overheard our conversation and said they would soon be joined by a woman who could tell us all about it. They spoke with such a strong gaelic accent that we couldn't understand them, but the other lady interpreted for us. When the other lady arrived she said she used to live at Torfoot and told us how to get there. The first lady insisted that she would wait while we finished breakfast and then take us to her house and arrange a taxi for us. Everyone there is so friendly. The taxi stopped first at the Drumclog church, built to commemorate the Battle of Drumclog. The driver turned off the meter and told us to go look around and take whatever photos we wanted. Then he drove us on to Torfoot which is just down hill from the Church. There was no one there so the taxi driver laid on his horn and the lady came running in from the barnyard. She was also very friendly and happy to answer our questions. She has so many visitors looking for their Brownlee roots that she keeps a list on her computer. She gave me a print out but I have misplaced it. Its here and I will find it eventually. The taxi driver had another appointment and could only give us an hour so we weren't able to spend as much time exploring and asking questions as I would have liked. The photos I took are on my Brownlees at Torfoot home page. Back in town we visited the cemetery. Thomas Brownlee, the 2nd Laird, is supposedly buried there, but I didn't know that at the time. There were quite a few Brownlee tombstones, but I didn't take time to copy them...remember I was with a cousin who didn't understand my fascination with old cemeteries. Then to the local library. We asked for books on local history and were given several. It was my cousin who discovered the book with the account of the English soldiers looking for Brownlee of Torfoot following the Battle of Drumclog, which you will also find on the home page. That got her more excited. Then to Strathaven Castle. This was first a home of the Douglas Clan and then the Hamiltons, and Lady Hamilton who deeded Torfoot to the Brownlees lived there. Unfortunately, there's not much left of it. The local tourist office is in a small building next to the castle. They were also very helpful. I was able to get a map of Lanarkshire there which shows Torfoot. Also bought a bagpipe Christmas ornament which plays 'Scotland the Brave' when you squeeze it. A real disappointment was that the museum which supposedly houses the flag that Thomas Brownlee rescued at the Battle of Drumclog was closed. Strathaven is a lovely little town, but suffering some from urban sprawl as most places are. Its still quite small and lodging for a large group might be a problem, although there are several B & Bs. However, Hamilton and Glasgow are close by within a hour or less drive. It was cold and rainy when we were in Glasgow so we didn't do very much. Have found since I returned that they have an excellent library where I wish I had spent the rainy day. And if you like the arts, Glasgow is the place to go. Edinburgh is historical and wonderful. Would have liked to spend more time there. We toured the Castle, of course, walked the Royal Mile and toured Holyrood. Also patronized several shops along the Royal Mile. Regrets: That I didn't know more about my Brownlee heritage before I went. That I didn't arrange to spend more time exploring Torfoot. That I didn't spend some time in Hamilton and visit Hamilton Castle which was the seat of the Hamilton family in Lanark. That my whole trip was just too short. I really need to go back. Scotland 2000 sounds good to me. Betty
1998 is here and our list is growing quite steadily. As of today, we are at *79*, wow, this is great. There has been a dialog this weekend about helping preserve the Torfoot Farm. What a concept. It is hard to imagine when sometimes it is hard even to just keep our own homes from falling apart. The constant upkeep, being an owner of a big 1960's home, I now have a better understanding. Anyway, I am getting off the subject. I love the idea of helping preserve a piece of us, history, something our children, grandchildren and so on can say they know about it and can see it for themselves. And seeing is believing. I would like to hear some feedback on the following: 1. Year 2000 trip to Scotland for the "Brownlee" group. To see the Torfoot Farm and tour area - requires financial planning and research. 2. Ian's idea of coming together and seeing what we can do to help. 3. What countries we all represent. I think if we can pull a group together to make this trip from all over several countries, states etc - it could be a media and genealogy event. There might even be an organization out there that can help make this trip possible. (you never know) Let me know what you think - even if it isn't a positive response - I want to know how everyone feels. Thanks Kay Cardwell-Davis Rootsweb Listowner Reddick Cardwell Brownlee
Dear Michael, Thanks heaps for your contribution. It will be filed for inclusion in the next edition. I would suggest however that you keep me updated of any new info that you come across. I have a special interest in that chart because it is possible that the James born in 1804 is my great great grandfather. The details that I have is as follows: James Brownlee born c1806 (so could be 1804), Wishawtoun, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Occupation has been recorded as a Carter and as a Miller. Married Elizabeth Somerville, born 1811. They had issue 1. John Brownlee born c1836 at Wishawtoun, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland. 2. Mary Brownlee born 14 August 1837 baptised 3 September 1837 Wishawtoun, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland. (Must have died young before the second Mary born) 3. Robert Brownlee (Twin) born 28 December 1840 baptised 7 March 1841 at Wishawtoun, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland. 4. Mary Brownlee (Twin) born 28 December 1840 baptised 7 March 1841 at Wishawtoun, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland. died 29 February 1920 at Motherwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. That way all members will see it posted. You will also get a copy as well. Its always best to send any new info direct to [email protected] Best wishes Ian Brownlee
From: Michael Haase [email protected] Eden Prairie, MN I recently subscribed to the [email protected] I've been successful locating researchers in other family lines and hope I can do as well with my Brownlee line. I read your e-mail dated 1/498 at 5:56 AM where you mention Torfoot farm. I'm not at all familiar with the place. I'm sure I can assume my Brownlee's were dirt poor folks in Scotland. No reason to leave if they were not. I had Wallace's who were planted in north of Ireland during the reign of James I. My Brownlee's remained in Scotland at least. I'm not really sure where I should be sending my James Brownlee Register Report. But since you have already written one book I thought I'd provide you with this information. The below information concerns David BROWNLEE, #3 in the report. Born on 2 Aug 1792 in Cambusnethan, Lanark, SCO. David died in McDonalds Corner, Lanark Cty, ONT, CAN on 15 Aug 1877; he was 85. Hi Betty, Thanks for the reply and your offer, I would be grateful to receive the name and address of the owner of Torfoot Farm. I also checked out your site - it's great. I couldn't seem to load the entire pic of the "Auld Hausie" (2nd pic on page) The roof line was all I could get - may have been a memory problem - I'll try again. To me the roof looked damaged. I'll have to also send you a draft of my family chart. Also the date base of 7000 names - is that on computer (able to be emailed?) Regards Ian
Hi all, Does anyone know who are the current owners of Torfoot Farm in Strathavon, Scotland? I did hear from someone about a year or two ago that was trying to raise money to restore Torfoot, but I unfortunately mislaid the letter. Just a really wild thought, but I wonder what the possibility would be of purchasing or leasing Torfoot Farm, restoring it, and making it a Brownlee Museum. Maybe forming some sort of Brownlee trust or co-operative to run it. If 1,000 Brownlee/ies raised $1,000 each - there's $1,000,000. How many living descendants of Torfoot alive today that would be interested? How many other Brownlee/ies would be interested? Maybe it could be some form of shareholding situation. Are there any Brownlee/ie lawyers out there that could perhaps offer some advice. I know these are pretty wild thoughts, but I know if I had the funds right now I would look into the feasibility of doing it. Anyway the goal is certainly set for me. Another thought I had to raise funds was that I would probably have enough material to publish another book - well actually it would be more than one volume and I am sure there would be no shortage of contributors out there. I certainly have the expertise in the Printing & Publishing side, although my biggest problem right now is time. However if the project could be co-authored, it would certainly alleviate that problem. Seriously, I would love to get feedback on these thoughts, positive and negative is ok. It would be good to brainstorm the idea at least. If anyone who reads this is not too sure about Torfoot Farm (or House), there is a photo published in "The Brownlee Family", published in Australia in 1986. ISBN 0 9588301 0 X. The book is 352pp and case bound. Gold blocked on front cover & spine. It has a lot of information on early Brownlee Records, The Origin of the Name, Heraldry, Lots of Charts from all over the world, Hamilton connections, Torfoot (etc). Ask your local library for a copy or if you wish, copies are still available for $40.00 Australian plus postage. Hi Ian. Someplace I have the address of the owner of Torfoot Farm, or at least of the family that was living there when I visited in April 1996. She has so many Brownlee visitors that she has them all on her computer and she gave me a print out of all the addresses. Somehow, I've misplaced the list but know I have it somewhere in my mess of papers. Have you checked out my Brownlee Home Page. There are photos of Torfoot Farm there that I took in 1996. http://members.aol.com/BRudo1/page2.index.html If your plan works out I would certainly make whatever contribution I can, but it sounds like a huge project. If you decide to republish I will be happy to make my 7,000 name database available to you. These are primarily of Torfoot descendants in America. Betty Rudolph
Since we are talking about Margaret Brownlies here are the details on the Margaret Brownlee I'm looking for. Margaret Brownlee Born 1811 Near Glasgow Scotland Married August 29, 1833 to Andrew McKean Died June 23, 1891 at Collingwood, Ontario, Canada Notes: 1) All of Andrew's children were born in Scotland. Presumably that means that Margaret and Andrew were married in Scotland. 2) One of Margaret's children was Archibald McKean. Born March 16, 1838 at New Glascow, Scotland. 3) Margaret was a weaver by trade in Scotland. 4) Margaret spoke High Gaelic and never spoke English. Please send this out to the list. If anyone knows more about Margaret, I'd like to hear it. Curt Finley [email protected]

Hi all I am currently researching my Brownlee family tree. I live in Somerset UK and my father - George Frederick Brownlee (78) - lives in the same town. My father was born in Letterbreen, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, N Ireland in 1919. His father, John Brownlee (b1877 d 1944) was born at the same address and his father (my great grandfather) James Brownlee of the same address was born c1850`s? Could anyone provide information of previous ancestors to the above?. We believe our family settled in N Ireland from Scotland in the early 1600`s Thankyou -- Phil Brownlee

While pursuing some research on my Blackburn line, I recently had occasion to delve into "Known Military Dead During the Mexican War 1846-48", compiled by Clarence Stewart Peterson in 1957. Quite by accident I discovered that one of the 9300 names entered in this book is that of David Brownlee (Pvt, Co D, 2nd Ill) who died in Mexico on 03JAN1848. Can any subscriber fit this David into his or her family tree? Another entry, which may be of interest to our coordinator, is that for Richard Cardwell (Pvt, Co G, 1st NC) who died in Mexico on 13OCT1847. Charles A. (Al) Blackburn
