Can you aid me in my search? Descendants of John G. Browning Generation No. 1 1. JOHN G.1 BROWNING was born April 23, 1848 in St. Clair Co. Il (Near Lenzburg), and died November 07, 1914 in Cutler, Il.. He married EMELINE PHILLIPS February 22, 1867 in St. Clair Co. Illinois, daughter of WILLIAM PHILLIPS and ELIZABETH DOWNEY. She was born March 27, 1848 in St. Clair Co. Il, and died February 23, 1909 in Cutler, Il. Notes for JOHN G. BROWNING: Enlisted (Oct.) 1863 in the U.S. Army at Alton, Illinois to take the place of his employer Samuel Thread. John served with Co. I & G 32nd Illinois Inf. (Civil War Vet. Pvt.) from Sept. 22, 1864 until June 3, 1865 (or April 1865). He served with General Sherman on His march to the sea. Obituary: J. G. Browning Passed Beyond Well Known Cutler Man Dies at the Home of His Daughter Saturday John G. Browning was born near Lenzburg, St. Clair County Illinois, April 23, 1848 and died in Cutler, Ill. Perry county Nov. 7, 1914 aged 66 years, 6 months and 14 days. In Oct. 1863 he enlisted in Co. I 32nd Illinois Infantry and served until April 1865. He was with Gen. Sherman on his march to the sea. He was united in marriage to Emeline Phillips Feb. 21, 1867, and to this union were born 9 children, 4 dying in early childhood. The family ties were broken Feb. 23, 1907 when his beloved wife passed to the home of the redeemed, prepared for those who love Him. Five loving children who survive were at his bedside. They are Jeremiah Browning of Tilden, Ill., George A. and Clifton A. of Cutler, Mrs Clara V. Pugh and Mrs Sarah E. Benedict of Cutler. Also 8 grandchildren, one having passed to the great beyond some time ago. They are left to mourn the death of a kind loving father and grandfather. One sister, Mrs. Nancy Cobb of Lane Dewitt Co. Ill. also survives. Funeral services were conducted at the home of his daughter. Mrs. Pugh on Monday, Nov. 9, 1914 at 10 o'clock, by Rev. R. H. Barr. Interment in the Cutler cemetery. The bereaved children have ur heartfelt sympathy in their hour of bereavement. May God bind up their broken hearts and cause each one to look up higher than this mortal life is the prayer of their many friends. NOTE: John G. Browning's obituary shows John being survived by a sister Nancy L. Cobb. My grandmother Clara Viola Browning Pugh told my father about visiting her aunt Nancy. I have a letter from one of Nancy's grandchildren that recalls Aunt Clara. 1850 and 1860 census of St. Clair Co. Illinois District #8 - 12 Mile Prairie has John G. Browning living with Lemuel and Pheobe (Hill) Todd. 1850 census District #8 - 12 Mile Prairie has Nancy living with Elizabeth Hill. Family history tells us John and his sister Nancy L. Browning were orphans living with family. John Browning's vocation was farming. Residence: St. Clair Co. Illinois and Denmark, Illinois. 1850 census St. Clair Co.
