As there were not preachers in every town, a lot of couples would have a ceremony of sorts, with friends and family. They would then proceed to make a life together, start a family, etc. Then, when a traveling preacher would come around, they would "legalize" the marriage. Quite often, you will find the first few children born before the actual marriage date, if you go by the marriage license. But the children were not illegitimate, because, in the eyes of God, the couple were already married. As to the parentage of Wm, I have not located that either. And yes, I have done a bit of research on the Qualls line, since John married a Qualls. I haven't done a lot, but probably will go farther with this line. I try to branch out in any area possible, because sometimes, you can research friends and family, and find facts that would otherwise be next to impossible to find.
