Donna, on page 167 of the Wm.Hurley book, "Our Maryland Heritage:Book 12...", James Monroe Browning 1873-1948, is buried with his wife at Kemptown Methodist Church (Frederick Co.,Maryland) He married Oct 15, 1902, to Nannie Louden Thompson b.1883 in Frederick Co, died 1977 at Frederick Nursing Center (Kemptown)... This is probably not your James, but there is quite a lot of information about this line of the family and does confirm a religious link. As to the mixed-race heritage of Robert Browning, I think the reference was to African-American. It helps to know this because of the way in which census information was written at various times. I know that I searched a long time for some relatives on my Hammond line without success before learning that they were of Native American (Lumbee) blood and possibly listed as mulattoes or tri-racial on some census records.
