Thanks again you all. True, the idea of a big split is a generalization--like I said at the start--a hunch. But it helps to brainstorm ideas, especially when we encounter a brick wall. We learn. Or I do, speaking for myself. I know now that the Mormons followed Brigham Young on the Mormon Trail, not John Smith. And some Brownings went only as far as Indiana and Illinois, etc. May I share another idea with you? Do any of your Brownings connect with the poet, Robert Browning? I was told many years ago that my line does, but I have no evidence. I was also told that the reason Elizabeth Barrett's family opposed her marriage to Robert was because of his mixed-race heritage. Anyone else have any information? Mitzi Hammond Perkins
It might be helpfull to understand that the Early Brownings were all affilated with the Church of England. Early Maryland was Catholic. A group of VA settlers moved into Maryland to establish the Chruch of England in the state. This had to do with the different Lord Baltimore's Church affiliations. I believe the first Browning's to come to Maryland came with the Church of England Group. Early Georgia was also affiliated with the Church of England and was the only legal religion of the state until some time after 1800. The first Brownings in Georgia were all most likely affiliated with the Church of England later the Episcopal Church after the Rev. War. There apears to be several family splits in Georgia early 1800's due to different Browning children changing their affilation to Baptist and Methodist. Wich over takes the Episcopal Church numbers in Georga even though it was against the law to pratice anything other than the Episcopal faith in early Georgia. I do not know a lot about the Morman movement except I have lines (Woodbury) associated with in in Salem Mass. I'm not sure how the movement moved from from Mass. down to Maryland & VA.
