We found the granite monument to Mr. Browning Sunday April 16, 2006. William Shelfer was Confederate Veteran and it is apparent that he thought highly of Charles Browning for he or his family to have erected such a monument. It's a large granite stone. Monument stands in the Shelfer cemetery just outside of Havana, FL and reads: “Charles Browning As a Slave & Freeman A Faithful Servant His Entire Life to William H. Shelfer & Family 1837 - 1904” The portion were it stands apparently is the black part which is unkept. This is a tragedy considering the many graves and past military headstones, at least WW1 thru Vietnam, that have been placed in this portion denoting past family histories of service to this country. Someone has placed flowers over the years on several of the graves so they must know those buried there and/or cared for them. We would like anyone with information of these men to contact us. We would like to get permission to at least clean around his stone and to get interest of keeping/cleaning up this portion of cemetery.
