Edmund Browning is the father of the Caleb Browning who supposedly married Alcey Grigsby. I have no proof that she was a Grigsby, but others might. I show two marriages for Benjamin Grigsbys: one on 23 Dec 1786 in Fauquier Co., VA. to Elizabeth Duncan; and the second was in 1790, also in Fauquier Co., to Alice Browning, presumably Caleb Browning's widow. Maybe this is where the Grigsby comes in. It seems, also, that there is a problem with the birthdate of 1734 given for Caleb by E. F. Browning and I think it may have been closer to 1750. He is supposed to have died about 1786 in Fauquier Co. WILL OF EDMUND BROWNING In the Name of God Amen I Edmond Browning of Caswell County being very weak of body but of Sound and perfect Memory do make this my last Will and Testament disannulling and revoking all other Wills & bequeaths heretofore made by me and calling to mind the Mortality of my body Knowing it is once appointed for all men to die I commit my Body to the earth from whence it came to [be] buried at the discretion of my Executors and my soul to god who first gave it & existance hoping and Trusting at the great day of Accounts to meet a joyful resurrection And as Touching my Worldly Goods (or estate) as it has been please God to bless me with I give and bequeath to my son John Browning an equal proportion of all my estate that is to be sold___Item I give to my son Calebs Heirs an equal proportion likewise of what is to be sold of my Estate___Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter Haney McReynolds an equal proportion likewise___I give and bequeath unto my Son Joshua Brownings two Sons Beedy & Joshua Browning an equal proportion of their Fathers proportion is equal to the others above___Item I give unto my Daughter Elizabeths Children her proportion with the others as above to be equally divided among all that is living ___Item I give unto my Daughter Mary Culberson One Negro Boy named Guilford which She has now in her possession___Item I give unto my Son Robert Browning an equal proportion as my Other sons above mentioned___Item I give unto my Son Nimrod Browning an equal proportion with the rest above mentioned of my Sons Item I give unto my Daughter Racheal Browning one Negro boy named Jack and one Cow and Calf out of my Stock of her choice & one Bed and Bolster & two pillows & four Sheets One Counterpain two Bed quilts & two Blankets Item I desire that my Grand Daughter Nancy Bowrin Shall have Twenty pounds Virginia Money to be raised out of my Estate Item I give unto my Wife Mary Ann Browning one Bed and two Sheets Counterpain & two bed Quilts & One Bolster & two pillows Cow and Calf the price of one when Sold at her own Choice and her Riding Saddle and a pewter Dish & Bason three Spoons & two plates and one pot and the third part of the price of my land when Sold and one Horse by the Name of Fanfair Now my Will is that my land of five Hundred Acres with all and every of my property of every Kind with Negroes and Stock of all Kinds to be sold only what I have bequeathed to my two Daughters Racheal and Mary and my Wife and divided as before mentioned___Now I constitute and Ordain my son Robert Browning & Alexr. Murphey In later proceedings, the heirs of Caleb Browning are named when Tolliver Browning,Henry Browning, John Flynn (married to Lucy, formerly Browning), Millie Browning, and Jenney Browning give power of attorney to Elijah Browning, their brother, in order to receive the legacy due to them as heirs of Caleb Browning, dec'd, as stipulated by the will of Edmund Browning. This power of attorney was sent by them from Clark Co., KY. to Caswell Co., NC. and dated 27 September 1810. Of Caleb's children, Tolliver was in Clark Co., KY. by 1795, when he first appears in the taxlists. Henry first appears on a Clark Co. taxlist in 1796 as a male 16 years of age, but under 21, and continues there until about 1832 or 1833 when he removed to Henry Co., KY. where he died leaving a will dated 17 June 1856. Henry served in the War of 1812 in the 17th Regiment (Francesco's) Kentucky Militia as a Lieutenant in Capt. Scobee's Company of Infantry. He entered the service on February 8, 1815 at a camp near Newport, KY. for a period on six months. He was discharged at Urbana on March 7, 1815. He received $13.67 for the 200 mile trip back home to Clark Co., KY. This Henry was married to a woman named Margaret; however, she was not the Margaret Newell (widow of Thomas Newell) who married a Henry Browning on 16 Mar 1807 in Shenandoah Co., Va. and continued to live there. Thank you so much for posting the Will of Edmund Browning. I descend from Elijah b ca 1768, the son of Caleb, b ca 1750. I'm having so much trouble with this because nobody seems to know much about this family. I have Edmund married twice. First to a Mary ? ca 1750, with only Caleb as a child. Then second to a Mary Ann Murphy , b ca 1734, m ca 1776. I have these kids as Joshua, Mary, Nancy Haney, Elizabeth b ca 1768, John b ca 1770, Robert b ca 1770, Rachel b ca 1777, Nimrod b ca 1777, On Caleb's kids I know nothing about Henry, b ca 1772, James, b ca 1774, I know Jane b ca 1774 married an Andrew Ramsey and that's all, I have Lucinda b ca 1776 married to John Flynn, Mildred b ca 1778. I know some about Toliver b ca 1771. On Elijah b ca 1768, all I know is he has 1 son named Gilbert b ca 1807. I don't know who is wife is or if he has other children. I don't know of a Browning yet that doesn't have lots of kids! Gilbert is my line. G ilbert married Elizabeth Steele and had Samuel Stack Browning b ca 1826, that married Martha Thornton, Jackson Co, IL. I don't know where any of the 7 kids of Gilbert were born.
