The Brownings I'm looking for are the grandparents of my mother-in-law. They were from the Harlan County, Kentucky area and she moved from there when she was little. She doesn't know much about them except her grandmothers name was Louisa Browning. Married name was Browning. Who in turn married a man she thought was named Joe Grills. The Brownings you have emailed me are probably connected somehow. She thought they derived from Germany. She did not know her grandfather either and could not supply a name. Hi, My ancestors go back to the Culpeper, VA Brownings (John was the first arriving from England in 1621) and I have pretty good info from back then...where my trail gets cold is after my Great, G, G Grandparents: Charles W. Browning/Catherine A. Hines moved from Culpeper to Audrain CO, MO circa 1840s. My Great, Great Grandparents are George Festus Browning/Mildred Lewis Botts, and my Great Grandparents are James Arthur Browning/Martha Caroline Moore. Browning was the head of the household, and the census information shows him with several children, one of which was a William Wesley Browning. Both are buried in Jefferson County, Alabama. They had many children with John Lacey Browning born 1880 my ggrandfather. My cousins's grandmother was his sister Clemmie Iola Browning Sellers. I am also a Humphreys. Have names of his children, etc. Have sent to Austin, Texas for his death record in hopes of finding more information. It certainly would be good luck if one of these was yours, but that's too easy, probably. (I came from Ludwell Yancy, Jr.). I agree that the naming practice of our ancestors (WHOEVER they are) provided ample opportunity to err, for those of us who try to place them in some sort of structure. When I first started this pursuit, it seemed to me that in every generation there were seven to ten descendants of every member of that generation, and so on, and so on, and so on. And that every member of each generation felt compelled to name his offspring names used by the preceding generation, so that in generation 1,there was one John with one son John, and nine sons with other names. In generation 2, there was one son John with one son John, and nine other sons with one son John ( Ten sons John). In generation 3, there were ten sons John with one son John and ninety other sons with a son John ( One hundred Johns in only 3 generations. Maybe we could get some of them mixed up). The other names were hallowed, too, and so we have several Williams, and Jacobs, and Joshuas,Edmunds, Woodvilles, and Toms. Only Four Ludwell Yancys that I know of, and three Winslows, so far. One of the people who responded to my entry was Lee Minnis. I don't know if you saw his entry on roots web at 11:40 AM, 9/1/99. He provides information on the children of Joshua and Nancy Ann Scott. Joshua had a father named John,a brother named John, and a son named John, and probably some uncles named John - all in Culpepper, Co.,VA.
