    1. [BROWNING] Va to Kentucky
    2. "Congratulations Ann" Good afternoon all you Browning researchers, My Browning line begins with Samuel Browning B:1780-1787?Va., D:1860 age 80? in Bullitt Co.Ky. Samuel married Mary Fields 1815 in Nelson Co. Ky. Their marriage has Samuel (Browing). Have Samuel Living in Washington County Ky., 1820-1840's with other Browning Families,Their names are 1820 James, Francis and Samuel 1830 Whitfield, Ruben, and Samuel 1840 Ruben and Samuel Then on the 1850 census Samuel Browning is living in Barren Co. Kentucky. with wife and children. Mary Fields was born in Maryland according to the 1850 census, her Father was Joseph Fields Deceased according to the Marriage. There were Many "FIELDS" living in Washington Co.Ky. between 1820-1840. Samuel and Mary's "CHILDREN" moved to Bullitt Co. Ky. and Samuel Ky, in Nelson which borders Bullitt Co. I have a newspaper article talking about the Browning's coming in to Bullitt Co. Kentucky before the Civil War. Samuel had a Brother name John Browning he died in Bullitt Co. in 1894 his age is hard to determine, he must have been the youngest Brother of Samuel he states born in Washington Co. Ky. also the Article mentions Grandma Greenwell ? I Have two wills to check in Washington Co. Kentucky, maybe they will be some sort of lead!!! Kentucky had a great deal of Brownings, which makes researching them a Big Hair pulling experience. These Brownings married into: BROOKS, HILTON, GREENWELL, ASH, FIELDS and PUGH/PEW. Hope to find some answers, going to the Kentucky Archives is helping, I have been researching Samuel Browning for about 6 years, "off and on" I guess he would be MY BRICK WALL. Samuel L. Brooks Louisville Kentucky P.S- this roll call didn't help "Browning's in California"

    1. Re: [BROWNING] Vincent
    2. Patty, I can't explain the differences in age or the middle initial "E" recorded on the census for Sarah--a lot of records are just plain wrong. However, if your grandmother's origins were indeed in Muhlenberg County, I'll bet you have the right Vincent Browning--even though her mother was *not* Elizabeth Wright. By the way, I noted Vincent's age as 32 on the 1870 census, as opposed to the age 22 you cite; I think only Vincent's third wife was ten years older. Vincent, the son of Caleb Browning and Sarah "Sally" Gray, married three times. The Wright children on the 1880 census are Letitia/Luticia's children from a previous marriage. Vincent Browning born 22 May 1837, KY; died 24 Sep 1893; buried in Mt. Pisgah Church Cem, Muhlenberg Co KY. Research: 1850, 1860 Muhlenberg Co KY Census with parents. 1870 Muhlenberg Co KY Census as Vince J. 1880 Muhlenberg Co KY Census. Muhl Co Marriages 1851-74: Vincent m. Martha A. Ford 27 May 1864; m. Mary E. Moore 17 Apr 1866; m. Leutitia Wright 7 Aug 1871. Vincent had one child: Sarah E. (1867-) (middle initial "E" and year of birth are from the 1870 census); Sarah could be the daughter of either Martha A. Ford or Mary E. Moore -- depending on which date of birth, 1865 or 1867, is the correct one. Vincent's third wife was Leutitia Highley Wright born 3 Nov 1828 in Muhlenberg Co KY, died in Muhlenberg Co KY 28 Mar 1907; buried in Mt. Pisgah Church Cem. Research: 1850 Muhlenberg Co KY Census (p204B with husband William Wright) as Lutetia, age 20, b KY. 1880 Muhlenberg Co KY Census as Lutiece Browning. 1875 Muhlenberg Co KY Settlements: Letitia Browning, guardian of Charles R., Nellie A. and Edward W. Wright (children from her previous marriage). Letitia's first husband was William A. Wright; her parents were Charles Vincent Highley & Elizabeth Highley. Hope this helps. 3. Hello listers! Looking for two Browning girls: Rebecca Browning, b. 1858 Crawford Co., IL Dora Browning, b. 1860 either Crawford or Shelby Co., IL mother Sarah Ann (??) Gaddis Browning. She was living in Windsor Twn., Shelby Co. IL 1870 census, but was not there in 1880. Two of Sarah's daughters from her first marriage (Winifred Albertine Gaddis who m. Martin Williamson, and Dulana Jane Gaddis who married Francis Logan) moved to Putnam Co. MO. Could Sarah and Rebecca and Dora have moved to MO as well? Sarah was a widow and may have accompanied her other family members. I DESPERATELY want to find these two girls, as they are the last two children of my Samuel Browning and I have not been able to find them. SO....if you have a Rebecca or a Dora in your databases who married c1880 to someone, I don't care who and where as long as it's west of IL, PLEASE PLEASE contact me with that info. I want to check out any leads. Please email me privately at: [email protected]

    2. Patricia L Strickler
    3. Hi! My name is Patti (Browning) Strickler and I was born in IL although I now live in TX. My earliest Brownings are Samuel and Margaret (Markee) Browning, who married in Harrison Co., OH in Feb 1815. I have never been able to find my Samuel's father, but a man named John Browning, b. c1771-5, who was living six households down from my Samuel in 1820-30 Harrison Co OH may be the right man. So far no proof, but I'm working on it. :) Samuel and Margaret lived in OH unil 1852, when they moved to Crawford Co., IL. They stayed there until Margaret's death; Samuel married again to Sarah Ann (??) Gaddis, moved to Shelby Co., IL, and died there. Samuel's children and descendants then scattered through: Illinois (Effingham, Coles, Cumberland, Jasper Co's); Indiana (Sullivan, Marion, Knox, Elkhart, Noble Co's); and most likely MO -- maybe Putnam Co.?? Children of Samuel/Margaret Markee: James b. 1815, m. Jane Nevitt 1839 OH Julia Ann b. 1817, m. John Hoy 1843 OH, m. 2nd James E. Milton Legg 1860 IL Elias b. 1819, m. 2. Yvonne Oliver Bowers
    3. Listers, Lane, Ann and I arrived at a different arrangement from what was posted yesterday and I am proud to be the new listowner for BROWNING-L. I've been a listmember for a long time and look forward to taking it to a new level. I've been a listowner for many years (I came to Rootsweb from Maiser after the 1997 crash) and host the following lists (some of you may be familiar with them): BRANSON ELLIOT/ELLIOTT GARRISON/GARRETSON LORENTZ/LORANCE/LOWRANCE MOFFITT/ETT/AT/ATT OLIVER SANDERS with all the companion GenConnect Boards (except SANDERS). and NORCAL (NORthern CALifornia) SOCAL (SOuthern CALifornia) CA-GOLDRUSH CA-EARTHQUAKES CORNISH (Cornwall, UK, not CORNISH surname - broad subject list) CORNISH-GEN (the companion list for a strict genealogy focus) I also maintain MOST WANTED pages for the surnames lists and CA-GOLDRUSH (you may have seen my announcements on ROOTS-L). For a sample, please visit the ELLIOTT page at: http://www.sonic.net/yvonne/elliott.html I would be most happy to create one for our BROWNING list if you all are interested. Finally, I also maintain two indexed family files (MOFFITT and BRANSON) on Rootsweb using Reunion for Macintosh. A good example is Robert MOFFITT and Margaret STUART (from whom most of our MOFFITTS descend). A sample of that file can be found at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~yvonne/moffitt/WC_TOC.HTM Finally, my own family file has a lot of BROWNING information (I posted my direct line yesterday): http://www.sonic.net/yvonne/ylo/WC_TOC.HTM Once a month I post the list stats (how many are subscribed, net changes from the previous month) and am open to any suggestions for making our list even more successful than it already is. Thanks again to Lane for a job well done for a long time and to Ann as well. Please email me with any concerns, questions, suggestions, etc. and thank you all for having me. 1. [BROWNING] roll call
    2. Hi, I am Tom Browning and have done alot of web research (not enough library research) on my ancestrial trail. I have traced my line back to the Jamestown Area to Franics Browning (1686-1775). I feel comfortable with my sources from now, back to him... but have seen several different versions going from him back in time. Most originate with a Captain John Browning (1588-1635, son William) in Jamestown (arriving in 1621), but there is some variance that I have been unable to confirm to a strong degree of certainty. I am in the Jamestown area right now (Norfolk) and was wondering if anyone knows of some place in the area that I can do some real detective work. Any help on a research site or supported research on this Browning chain would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom

    1. [BROWNING] Roll Call
    2. My name is Sue Redman and I live in Scottsdale, Arizona with my husband, two kids, two dogs, fish and a hampster. I was born in Texas and have been doing genealogy research for about a year. I descend through "old" Caleb Browning who was bon in 1763 in Bedford County, Virginia and died in 1860 in Lafayette, Mississippi. He married Anna Moore in 1782 and moved from Virginia to Tennessee. They had one daughter, Violet and possibly two sons. I don't know exactly what happened to Anna, but Caleb then married Elizabeth (Betsy) Sinkler in 1791. They had eleven children: Malinda, Robert Sinkler, Josua H., Matilda, Joseph Caleb, John G., Benjamin, Nancy, Elizabeth, Caroline Irene and Albert Gallatine. I further descend through Caleb's son Benjamin who married Rebecca West and their son Caleb Leonidas who married Elizabeth Bellamy. I have been trying to determine if my "old" Caleb is the son of Caleb Browning and Alice Grigsby and grandson of Francis I. Browning and Elizabeh Carter Lloyd. I am aware that Caleb Browning and Alice Grigsby had a son named Caleb (jr.) but I have not been successful in verifying that this is my Caleb. Any help would be appeciated. Sue Redman

I also noted that the wife is 10 years older than Vincent, but named Luticia Wright where in the 1870 census, Mary E. was 9 years older. Maybe Vincent married twice? These are most probably 2 different families, as Vincent and his wife are both 20 years older in 10 year time. hmmmm Well, I'll continue searching. Patty
