On the 2nd day of October 1832 personally appeared before the County Court of Russell County and State of Virginia Francis Browning a resident in the County of Russell and State of Virginia aged about seventy nine years __ being first duly sworn according to law does on his own oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions and by the ___ of ___ ___ June 7th 1832. That he was enlisted the service of the United States in the State line of North Carolina in the seventh of October in the year he thinks of 1778. at Hillsborough in the said State, under Captain William White and ?????? and was assigned to the State Regiment commanded by Colonel James Sanders and Major Moore for term of six months, and from Hillsborough the place of ____ he with the said Regiment marched to Salisbury where they joined the Salibury Regiment under the command of Col.___ and was there placed under the command of General Rutherford and marched from this place then called Pine ___ the same perhaps which is now called Camden in the State of S. Carolina near the junction of the river___ ____ ____ and from thence marched to the Ten Mile house it being about ten miles from Charleston in the State of S. Carolina and from thence to a little ___ called D___and from thence this line of march for Savannah in S.C. where they joined the main army under the command of General _inas_or at a ___ called _____ ___ ___ ____ ____. ____ which ___ ___ Regiment to which the said Francis Browning belonged, marched up the said river to a placed called the Two Sisters, where they ___nearly in sight of the enemy for about one month, and thence marched to the placed called Briar Creek, where they joined General Ashe in the ___of the battle fought at that place, and took part in that ___and from there he and his Regiment were ordered to make a ___ march back to Puninsburg to protect the ____ life there, which they affected by a more sever and fatiguing march ___ ___ ____ and in the vincity of that place, watching and following the ___ movements of the enemy upon the border line of Virginia from Savannah to Augusta, which was ___to the ___of the British then in the said State of Georgia, and was thus incessantly engaged until about the 10th of April in the year he things of 1779. When he and the Regiment to which he belonged were discharged. at a place called Black Swamp about 510 miles from home, and obtained a regular discharge in writing which has since been ___ lost or mislaid he cannot produce it. The said Browning although normally belonging to the State line, performed continental service during the ___ aforesaid and of the nominal compensation received from the government for his services aforesaid paid $100 thereof for one bushel of salt. The said Francis Browning further states that sometime after his return home from the ___aforesaid he removed with his family from Caswell County in the State of N. Carolina, near Hillsborough then N. Carolina but now State of Tennessee where he was again in 1781 drafted to go to the State of South Carolina under the command of ___ ___ Services for a __months ___ when the situation of his affairs is as such to make it exceedingly _____ for him to leave home and he employed one _______ a substitute whom he paid a horse valued at fifteen pounds in gracious currency and also allowed him the wage of the said ___ and that the said Susette ia __ re issued as such by the proper officer and performed the duties of the said __ He hereby relinquishes any claim whatsoever to a pension or an ___ ___ the present, as is declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in the state. Browning Jr., a former reporter and assistant city editor at the old Louisville Times, died Thursday at his home in Rolling Fields after a long battle with diabetes. He was 63. Browning joined the Times staff as a reporter in 1961 and served as assistant city editor for a number of years before retiring in 1976 because of ill health. Browning, a native of Lexington, also had worked as a wire editor for the old Lexington Leader. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Williamsburg and the Filson Club. Survivors include his wife, the former Carolyn Siler; his mother, Mrs. Harold A. Browning Sr. of Lexington; and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Phelps of Frankfort. The body was cremated. A graveside service will be at noon tomorrow in Highland Cemetery in Williamsburg. Pearson's is handling arrangements. Memorial gifts may go to the American Diabetes Association

Browning of the county of Lee of the State of Virginia being of sound mind and of the age of sixty eight and knowing of the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death desire to state that in event I should die of my present illness that the following statement and rules shall be observed in the winding up of my estate both real and personal, after the settlement of all just and true claims that may come against my estate. The lands owned by me known as the James Farmer land and Wash Smith I want fenced up together in the same boundary all of which lying and being in the County of Harlan, State of kentucky I leave it optionary with my Executor John C. Wynn... whether he rents lands for stock or buy cattle to graze upon it. he may enclose the clifts along the mountain and leave open the caves for five or six months in each year. The Jonesville property better known as my house property, mill etc. shall be run by my son-in-law John C. Wynn and in the interest of my beloved daughter H. Should their be any excess of my estate remaining in the hands of my executor after payment of the above bequests, then I will that the same be divided equally among my devises above mentioned, except William Jessess, and should there be a deficiency then their bequests , except that made to William Jesee are to be reduced in proportion to the sums bequeathed to them. 14. Fifthly I give to my son John one bay horse known by the name of Tom, and also I give the set of black smith tools at the mills to John & William for the use of the mills And I give to my sons John & William the use of my middle meadow for the term of ten years and the free ingress & egress of the same. I also give to John the saddle which he generally rides & also give to John & William each a good ___. I give to my son William the horse known by the name of ___ and I also give to each of my sons ____________ of my beds & furniture. 6th I give to my two youngest sons Francis and Aaron the plantation on which I now live with all the appurtenances of the same but not include the seventy six acres tract of land which I purchased from McClung and also to each of the two last mentioned sons when they shall arrive at twenty one years of age a good young horse worth eighty dollars. I also give to John & William for the use of the mills my waggon & two pair of gears I also give to beloved wife Sarah all the property she had when I married her not yet disposed of, and also all my household furniture & farming utensils, except the bureau & book case which I give to Elizabeth, & the clock which I give to Polly, and I also give to Polly ten dollars in money to make up the difference to her between the last mentioned bequest to Elizabeth and the one mentioned to Polly.
