Teresa, Hurley is correct from what I can find out. I always thought my Joshua was the son of John & Elizabeth (Demarest). My Joshua, who married Nancy Ann Scott, is the son of a John Browning but not this John. Additionally, his brother, James B. Browning (married to Susan Hickman), is often confused with another James Browning who is the son of John & Elizabeth. EF Browning missed a generation (there were three Francis Brownings) on this line as well as confused several families (cousins) with the same first names (John in particular). To further confuse things, a daughter of Joshua & Susan, Hannah Elizabeth Browning, married a possible cousin, Isaac Norman Browning. Isaac's father was Francis III, son of Francis Jr., son of Francis Sr., son of...you guessed it another John. If you haven't already received a copy of my files I'd be happy to send them to you. They contain enough info to convince me that I'm on the right track. My brick wall, however, is the elusive John Browning, father of Joshua & James B. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 31, 2001 7:29 PM Subject: Re: [BROWNING] Browning, William, VA to MO > The will below of John Browning husband of Elizabeth possibly Demarest lists > Joshua, apparently, Joshua and his dad were not on the best of terms. > According to The Browning Families by William N. James, Do you show a brother, Joshua BROWNING, for your James BROWNING, who m. Susan Hickman. I see so much on this family, John BROWNING & Elizabeth Demarest but little hard evidence. Joshua was said to have died December 1814 in Bourbon Co (with a will... I found no will). I'd gladly welcome a new book! Gretchen, I do not know how much you have on your line as below, but I do have a few references that may assist. Have you seen the 1860 census records of Izard and Independence Co., AR? I have them if you need them. Williamson is 63, SC and Sarah 60 SC, only Washington 20 TN, is with them. Angus, Amanda, & William are on the 1860 Indep. Co., records. I have a short write up I done on the 2 William Brownings of Barren Co., KY. I do not see a connection to your line, but will send it if you want. They of Union District (Co.), SC, and Maryland. Well, Family Discovery is back at it. These two kids from Cedar Rapids Iowa are charging $43.00 to 59.00 for "unlimited access to their website. The only problem is that their website is a conglomoration of OTHER PEOPLE'S research. They put all the links they can find on their site - even linking to other peoples personal web pages. Further, most of their data "cells" are empty. They claim to have census, marriage, land records, etc., and they do . . . kind of . . . For example, for Illinois, all they have are: A link for marriage, cemetery and death records (which doesn't work) A link for Civil War regiments - which takes you to the Illinois Civil War Project Civil War regiment nicknames - which takes you to the Illinois Civil War Project Casualty lists for the Korean and Viet Nam war - which takes you to NARA records. If you're even tempted to buy this service, you may want to take a look here: http://www.familydiscovery.com/members/

Hello: I'm new to Browning research, and I've been browsing through the archives of this list and wonder if anyone has information on James BROWNING (born circa 1770) some of whose children were married in Knox Co., TN (in 1807 through 1828 or so). Specifically, what is the source for a list of his "known" children? There was a post from 1997 regarding him and his children, but the email address isn't valid anymore. I'm searching for the parents of Mary "Polly" Browning. She was born about 1791 in SC (from several census records). She married Ephraim CLAIBORNE (Claybourn/Cliburn, etc.) in 1809 in Knox Co., TN. Moved to DeKalb Co. around 1825. In 1840, Allen Co., KY became their final home. Also found in Allen Co. with them is Letitia Browning (Polly's sister---born about 1802 TN) who married David LONAS (Lones) in Knox Co., 1826. There was also a Browning nephew (L.P. Browning) still living there in 1936. That's all the known family of Polly's that I can find for now. Other clues may lie in the names of Polly's children: she had sons named William Divine/Devine Claybourn and James Thompson Claybourn. In searching the SC 1790 census data, I find Brownings and DEVINEs in the same area (96th District, Spartanburg and neighboring Union counties). There is a Thomson (Thompson?) Browning there too. In the 1800 SC census index, there are Brownens (Brownings?) in Union Co.; page 217 has James Brownen and William Brownen; page 218 has Charles Brownen and Thomas (Thomson?) Brownen. Does anyone know if these men are related? Can these Brownens be assumed to be Brownings? James Brownen/Browning is not there in the 1810 census.....is he the James Browning of Knox Co., TN? If there's anyone out there that recognizes these lines, I'd sure appreciate any hints/help/suggestions. Thank you for your time. Best regards, Tracey Baldwin

Hello listers!!!! I am searching for a John Browning, who could possibly have been enumerated in the 1810 Maryland census. I believe this man moed to Jefferson/Harrison Co. OH around 1811, and I would ask that if anyone runs across a John in the MD census of that year, to please contact me. I have looked with no success, but perhaps someone else out there will see something I've missed. Thanks to all on the list, and happy new year to everyone! Patti (Browning) Strickler Arlington TX

Hi ! I have a Melinda Ella BROWNING born Jan 8, 1879., Melinda Ella Browning married Samuel Paul LEWIS in Franklin County, Illinois., On December 15, 1896. The marriage license lists Melinda's parents as Warren Browning and Sarah ???? I just started on this family., So would appreciate any help I can get with them. I've read the 1880 census for Franklin County, and found her family. The 1870 Census for Franklin County lists a Levi Browning and Tabithia., As having a child Warren Browning about 16 years old. Would this Levis Browning be Melinda's grandfather ? Anyone know. Melinda father I have would have been born about 1855 say's Il. Thanks For Any Help ! Kathy
