    1. [BROWN] Two Brown Lines
    2. Carolyn Sue Howard
    3. I have two Brown lines - aren't I lucky?!! Well, I haven't found out much information on either line lately, so I thought I would write once again to the list. I figure it can't hurt! The first is my Brown line on my father's side of the family. My great, great grandfather was a Ransom H. Brown, born in about 1813-15, supposedly in Virginia (where, I have no clue). I have no idea who his parents were, nor his siblings. But he travelled to DeKalb Co., Alabama and was there in 1836, which is when he married my gg grandmother, Mariah Lamar, in DeKalb. They were still there in 1850, and had the following children: The oldest was my great grandmother, Mary Undine Brown, born in 1839; Frances, William, James, and Sarah. Thomas Brown was born a little after 1850. Mariah (Lamar) Brown died between 1850 and 1860, and she may have died en route to Mississippi or she may have died in childbirth, with the birth of Thomas. In 1858, my great grandmother, Mary Undine Brown, married Joseph Abner (Joab) Johnson, and also earlier in that same year, Ransom Brown remarried, to a Jane Oliver. By 1859, both families (Ransom and his children from his first wife, and the new wife, plus another child - Oliver H. Brown AND Mary Undine and her new husband, plus a child - my grandfather, John Randal Brown) were all in Neshoba Co., Mississippi. Then, Ransom's second wife, Jane, died and he married a third time, to a Nancy Dumas, and by 1870, they were in Copiah Co., MS, and they did have several children. I CAN'T EVEN KEEP UP WITH ALL OF THEM!! At any rate, first of all, I would love to know who Ransom H. Brown's parents/siblings were, where he was born in Virginia, etc. Then, I would love to know what actually happened to all of Ransom's children from three wives. Well, I know what happened to Mary Undine, of course, and Frances, the next oldest, went back to Pontotoc Co. and married an Ambrose Carter. I do believe that Oliver H. Brown, the one and only son of Ransom and Jane (Oliver) Brown also went to Copiah Co., and remained there. I also believe that the youngest child of Ransom and Mariah - Thomas Brown, was in Copiah and died there, but not positive about him. BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO James Brown, Sarah Brown and the children of Ransom and Nancy (Dumas) Brown? Well, I can see this is much too long and involved, but I hope somebody can help. Thanks for reading. Sue (Johnson) Howard (P.S. I'll write about my other Brown line on another e-mail)

    3. Carolyn, I saw your note and was wondering if you had explored the possibility that Mary Undine was named for a grandmother. Undine sounds like a family name to me. I have some family that named their child the wife's maiden name, and my son is named Barrett, which is my mother's maiden name. 3. Not really. I had not thought of that possibility at all. Her mother's maiden name was Lamar and I know the names of her mother's brothers and sisters, and there was no Undine anywhere. But perhaps her father's mother was an Undine. I'll have to explore that notion. Thanks for writing. 3. Additionally the name may be a variation of "Ondine" a poetic name from literature. I have long forgotten which prose or poetry Ondine appeared in but possibly Irish or Scottish. 2. I'd look for another possibility also. What name Undine could be otherwise. I found a relative Eunice listed as Units and Unice. Those poor census takers could not always spell a name they were not familiar with. Just a thought! 3. Don't feel that you have all the luck---I have 3 main Brown lines, 2 for me and one for my husband. And several in-law-Browns not in the direct lines. One of mine and one of my husband's are both stock in NC, the other in SC. (I keep telling my husband we are going to find out that we are related one of these days) 1. Hubby's line: grandfather was William Ethridge Brown b May 25, 1859 or 1862 depending on which census you use. b somewhere in Tenn, d Harris Co, TX 1919 both William's parents shown as being from NC. Married Zelphia Anne Lowe Jan 3, 1901 in Gordo, Pickens Co, Ala. DNA results link us to Thomas Brown (father of Edmund Brown) b abt 1716/1720 and living in Bladen Co, NC in 1769.. Big gap there. 2. My gggggrandmother was Elois Brown b 1797 in NC, d after 1869 near Fairplay, Panola Co, TX married John Harris b 1792/1795 d in Gipson Co, TN. First 2 children b NC, 3rd child b 1825 in TN, last child b in TN 1834. 3. My ggggrandmother was Margaret Brown b 1788 in SC m David Jay probably in the Abbeville, SC area, d 1858 Conecuh Co, Alabama. Her parents were Andrew Brown b abt 1755 d Jan 21, 1808 probably in Abbeville or Old 96, SC and Mary Hutchenson b abt 1760 Oh by the way my name is Carolyn too.Good hunting hope we meet up somewhere!
