Hello List - recently I was contacted about an Emma C. Brown who married Harrison Rumsey who lived in Newfield, NY. Originally the person who contacted me thought she had been born in 1855 in Lodi, CAYUGA Co - but when I looked into it further i found that she had been born in LOCKE - Cayuga Co. The question asked of me was who her parents were..... I eventually determined that Emma C. Brown must be the daughter of Warren and Roxie Brown of Cayuga Co. Here is all what I came up with which I shared with the person who asked the question and thought perhaps I might share you since I just got a photo of Warren and Roxie Brown from the person who had been asking for help. If anyone is related to Warren and Roxie and would like a copy of the photo I could send it to you. #1 - I don't believe that Emma was born in Lodi - I think she was born in Locke, Cayuga Co they look similar - your website noted Lodi, Cayuga County - Lodi was in fact part of Cayuga Co up until about ??? 1804 but had been Seneca County for nearly 50 years when Emma was born. I think it's a case of unintentional human error. Working from this Friday Aug 7th, 1925 article in the Genoa Tribune - a Cayuga County Newspaper (From Nearby Town's Section)--- we link up a Norman Brown with an Elmer Rumsey ---- so I then traced this Norman Brown to see how old he was and what I could learn about him. The article said: Mr. and Mrs. Norman Brown and family, Leo Pulsen sp? and Ralph Hamlin sp? Sunday guest at Elmer Rumsey's in Newfield. Unable to find Emma and determining that Norman "COULD" be from the same family as Emma I followed Norman L. Brown ---- below is Norman in the 1930 Census - through 1880 where I find him with his parents. 1930 Census Venice, Cayuga Co. Norman L. Brown head ae 67 Grace A. Brown wife ae 67 Edith M. Brown daughter ae 37 Leon W. Brown son ae 33 1920 Census Venice, Cayuga Co, Norman L. Brown head ae 57 Grace A. Brown wife ae 43 Lynn W. Brown (Male) son ae 23 1910 Census Locke, Cayuga Co. Norman Brown * head ae 47 Grace Brown wife ae 48 Leon Brown son ae 14 (There is a transcription error here - the index says William Brown - but it's clearly Norman if you look at it - someone has already noticed it and offered a transcription already) 1900 Genoa Cayuga Co. Norman Brown head ae 37 Grace wife ae 39 Edith M. dau ae 9 Leon son ae 5 1880 Locke, Cayuga Co. Warren Brown head ae 63 <------- these people are Norman's parents and they are of age that they could be Emma's parents. Roxa Brown wife ae 57 Hattie Brown dau ae 23 Helen Brown dau ae 20 Norman Brown son ae 17 Having found Norman L. Brown's parents I wanted to see if I could ever find them with Emma as a daughter..... 1870 Locke, Cayuga Co. Warren Brown head ae 53 Roxie wife ae 47 Anson son 21 Harriet dau 12 Helen dau 10 Norman son 7 <- here is Norman but where is Emma? Solomon Willis ? ae 96 <----- I bet you will find that this is Roxie's father..... or at least some relation. 1860 Locke, Cayuga Co. Warren Brown head ae 43 Roxey wife ae 39 Margrette dau ae 18 Sarah J. dau ae 13 Asil (must be Amson) ae 10 Frances ae 9 Emma ae 6 <------- there you go - Emma born about 1855 - I would bet that this is your Emma. Ellen Brown ae 5/12 I can not tell you where Emma is in 1870. Most likely the census it hard to read - the hand writing was sloppy and so she was lost that way. She's probably working out in a home near her home in Locke - or living with a sibling. So - who was Fred Rumsey? -- is the next question - and from the 1880 Census of Emma C. Brown Rumsey - a census known to the inquirer - I find Fred was Emma's son. 1880 Newfield Tompkins Co. Harison E. Rumsey head ae 33 Emma Rumsey head ae 25 <---------- Once again - this is your Emma and there is Elmer - her son. Fred Rumsey son ae 4 Elmer Rumsey son ae 1 So to summarize the newspaper clipping - Norman, Emma C. Brown Rumsey's brother was going to visit his nephew Elmer - his Emma's son. There were other articles at Fulton History that also supported this. 1850 Locke Cayuga, NY Warren Brown head ae 35 <- note all through Warren is born in Vermont ---- Norman's records say his father was born in Vermont. Mistakes like that happened all the time. ANOTHER QUESTION THEN - Who is Solomon Willis ? I would bet that Solomon Willis - found 1850 - Census Locke - Cayuga Co. NY = is Roxie's father ---- but I can't prove it.
