I believe you're right, Alice. My husband's ggrandfather died of catarrh of the stomach, which my husband's cousin (an MD) said would have been quite painful. Catarrh Inflammation of a mucous membranes in the air passages of the head and throat Bronchial catarrh was bronchitis; suffocative catarrh was croup; urethral catarrh was gleet; vaginal catarrh was leukorrhea; epidemic catarrh was the same as influenza. Also called cold, coryza. This description came from a list of older diagnoses from a genealogy site, thought it might also help!
