    3. It does sound like your William has an "NPE," a "non-paternal event" (i.e., a hidden adoption or illicit paternity) in his patrilineal line. But, as long as you aren't crushed by finding out you're not a BROWN, you're actually lucky. It's going to be much easier to discover your ancestry as a MAXWELL or a RAMSEY than it would be as a BROWN. Obviously, either the MAXWELL or the RAMSEY has an NPE in his lineage, too. In the end, all the MAXWELLs and RAMSEYs could turn out to be BROWNs!
