Another thought is that our surname was not Brown. My ggrandfather oldest son of John Ebenzer Brown told my grandfather that our surname was really Flanagan and we are from Dublin Ireland. So I have also ticked the name Flanagan as well as Brown plus asked for to have any name that matches with the DNA of my brother. My husband, Allen, tested with FamilyTreeDNA.com and has 4 matches there (one 25/25, and 3 67/67) I have also uploaded his results to the Ancestry.com DNA database, no matches there and no input from other Browns there. Now that more labs are starting to do the testing we need a place to be able to compare the results. FamilyTreeDNA has over 300 Browns in their Brown project. I haven't been able to find out how many Ancestry.com has and have no idea about the other labs. Results are no good if you can't compare them. FamilyTreeDNA.com also has a site called www.YSearch.org where anyone from any lab can upload their results and search by matching results or by name. You don't have to have tested at their lab and it is free. I would like to see if we can either get everyone on the list who has tested to upload their results to either that site or Ancestry.com (though I think you have to be a subscriber there, I am) or let us know if there is another site that can be viewed for comparison with their DNA. For those who have tested it is then obvious if a line is yours or not. What do you all think? I run five DNA surname projects at FTDNA, and I encourage all my members to upload to Ysearch. I have also subsidized a couple of dozen tests, always with the stipulation that a requirement for the subsidy is uploading to Ysearch. So, yes, I think Ysearch is now, and will continue to be, the best "general" database to use for uploading and searching. Do be careful about uploading to Ancestry. My "impression" is that if you do, you're basically giving them the data to use as they see fit, including keeping it and republishing it. [Does someone know for certain?] At Ysearch, you can remove your data any time you want. You can also remove yourself from the FTDNA database any time you want, even if you were tested there, because they make no claim of ownership of your data (or your sample). Wherever you decide to get tested or to upload your data, make certain you are aware of whether you are surrendering legal title it, assuming you care one way or another. Test results without a lineage are, as you know, virtually useless, so I am very persistent in my projects to get good lineages associated with the results. Not all project admins make such an effort, however, so it's a matter of luck how useful results are from different projects. I wish those admins who aren't doing it would either take on a co-admin or two -- or give up the project and let someone else run it. But if they don't, the alternative is for us to upload to Ysearch, including a GEDCOM of the patrilineal line. Wow! It would be such a useful database if everyone did it!
