Hello all, Tonight I updated my RootsWeb site with all the hand-written genealogical information that is in the family Bible of John Clayton & Alice Myres. The process was intensive, even for me with 30+ years experience working with letters, words, numbers in dozens of fonts and font types! I was a sign-painter by trade, and have been doing genealogy for about 50 years, so am quite familiar with reading old handwriting too. The main problem is that a lot of the text was faded quite badly. Another obstacle was that the entries were not all done by the same person (some was nice penmanship, and some wasn't), and capital letters were sometimes very difficult to decide upon. This family were Quakers, so often did not even use their actual names in recording this stuff, using just initials like "J.C." for John Clayton and "L.C." for his wife Leah, etc. was normal procedure here. To make matters even more difficult, sometimes some of the initials were not capitalized. I was able to adjust the lightness/darkness, the color intensity, and the contrast, etc., which was a /tremendous/ help! The 'formulae' used by them to record their names and dates was not how you and I would do it today, but once I caught on it was no problem, and actually helped me make out certain words. The images on the eBay site are larger now than what were there at first. Since I am /not the owner of the Bible or the original scans/ I am hesitant to forward the ones they sent to me to anyone; I just don't feel right about it. I hope that doesn't offend anybody, as I am ALWAYS willing to share my own genealogical information to all who ask (that's why I am inviting anyone to use the actual new dates from my site posted below). The owners have been very complimentary and generous with me, and some of you too, and I don't want to offend them - even a little bit. Anyway, here is John Clayton & Alice Myres' family page: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=updike&id=I14229 I suggest clicking on the Register button in order to get the dates for their children and some grandchildren; be sure to check the NOTES for some of them too. I think I forgot to indicate the source for some of the dates, which I will add later. The sellers tried to interest the British Royal family in it, since the late Princess Diana Spencer is also a descendant, as is the presidential Nixon family. The Royals either didn't seem interested or did not convey the info to the right people, like Diana's brother Charles, who has done a family history of the Spencers. It would be wonderful if a number of descendants could go together on it, to keep it in the family. I'll respond to the emails I received from some of you later this week. We've had company, and a huge backlog of yardwork that needs to be done (due to the loooong stretch of rainy weather). Enjoy! Dale Updike Saskatchewan, Canada
