Doug, I found your message about James Brown may be an Indian from VA. My James Brown was born June 14, 1816 in either NC or TN. His father was born William Brown June 12, 1788 NC married Apr 6, 1812 Guilford Co., NC to Elizabeth Ley (or Lee, Leh). Both died here in Richmond, IN, 1846 and 1847. I do know that William's father was James Brown born Jan. 1, 1741 NC married abt 1775 in Guilford Co., NC to Martha Vernon born about 1753 in Wrightsborough, GA. They were Quakers but by the time they had been in Indiana from 1820, they were not Quakers any more. Do you think there could be a connection?
