Hi, I am new to this list and hope that someone can help me find my Brown ancestors & descendents. Here is what I have on my Brown family. . My gggrandfather Staten/Slater Brown was born about 1799 in Tennessee, North Carolina or possibly Virginia. He and Dicy J. Coffield were the parents of my ggrandfather William Wesley Brown who was born Jan. 9, 1823 in North Carolina. The 1830 Census shows Staten & Dicy Coffield Brown(can't find a marriage record) living in Halifax Cnty., North Carolina. There were 6 children in the home, 1 female child and 5 males. One of these males was my ggrandfather William Wesley Brown and I believe another male was Sandy Brown, born about 1827. During the 1830's Staten Brown and family moved to Rush Cnty., Indiana and the 1840 census shows the family living in Ripley Twp., Rush Cnty., Indiana. Staten had a child Mary, born about 1831 and a son Andrew born about 1837. Evidently Dicy passed away and on Feb. 6, 1845 Staten Brown married Pennelope Ruby in Rush Cnty., Indiana. Penny was born 1817 in North Carolina. The 1850 Census shows the family living in Madison, Jefferson Cnty., Indiana with the following in the home: Staten BROWN Age:51 b. in N.Carolina Penelope BROWN Age:33 b. in N. BROWN Age: 5 b. in Indiana John Quincy BROWN Age: 1 b. in Indiana The 1860 Census shows the family living in Hadley, Barry P.O., Pike Cnty., Illinois. with the following children: Staten BROWN Age: 61, b. in North Carolina Penelope BROWN Age 43 b. in No. Carolina Harrison BROWN Age: 20 b. in North Carolina Cassius BROWN Age: 15 b. in Indiana John Quincy BROWN Age: 11 b. in Indiana Jessee BROWN Age:10 b. in Illinois Henry BROWN Age: 5 b. in Illinois Henryetta BROWN Age: 5 b. in Illinois Allen BROWN Age: 4 b. in Illinois Sandy Brown married Sarah Ann Morgan July 19, 1848 in Madison, Jefferson Cnty., Indiana. The 1860 Census shows Sandy living close to Staten Brown with the following in the home. Sandy BROWN Age 35 b: in No. Carolina Sarah Ann BROWN Age 33 b. in Indiana Mary BROWN Age 11 b. in Indiana William BROWN Age 8 b. Illinois Samuel BROWN Age 7 b. in Illinois Robert S. BROWN Age 4 b. in Illinois Sandy BROWN Age 7/12 b. in Illinois Andrew BROWN Age 23 b. in Indiana The 1870 census shows Penelope Brown living in Bear Grove Twp., Fayette Cnty., Illinois with the following in the home: John Quincy BROWN Age:11 b. in Indiana Jessee BROWN Age:10 b. in Illinois Henry BROWN Age: 5 b. in Illinois Henryetta BROWN Age: 5 b. in Illinois Allen BROWN Age 4 b. in Illinois Christiana BROWN age 10 b.in Illinois I can not find a trace of Staten Brown after 1860 nor can I find a trace of him prior to 1830. The census films show that he was born in N.C. The death record of my ggrandfather William Wesley Brown says that his parents Staten Brown & Dicy Coffield were born in Tennessee. William Wesley Brown married Thankful Delight Smith in Aug. 8. 1852 in Pike Cnty., Illinois. They had 12 children, that I know of, and I wonder if some of the middle names of these children were surnames of family members.
