    3. To correct the record, Edward Browne, age 24, was listed with those who took the oath of allegiance and supremacy while embarked on the "Hopewell," Mr. Thomas Wood, Master, enroute from London to Barbados on 17 February 1635, not 1634! A John Bowne (Bownd) was also on the same vessel.[Peter Wilson Coldham, "The Complete (sic) Book of Emigrants 1607-1660" (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1987), pp. 124-125, citing Public Record Office (PRO):E157/20] Barbados in the West Indies was a normal landfall for vessels transiting the Atlantic to North America. There were a great number of sugar plantations there. After Barbados it was easier for sailing ships to return to England by using the Gulf Stream current up the Atlantic coast at least as far as the Carolinas, and even to New England depending on the other trading commodities such as manufactured goods and/or tobacco (Oh, shame!). Edward Browne could have continued on the "Hopewell," or taken a later ship to go on to Maryland as you believe he did. George W.
