I have been researching a string of John Browns in PA who I have traced back to 1796, and possibly further. who lived in Hopewell Twp. of Bedford Co.. Perhaps some of these uncovered Browns are related to other list members. Because of the analysis below I started to look out of Bedford Co., PA for my two John Browns (John M. Brown , b. Dec. 7, 1796 in Penn., and his father, John Brown also b. in Penn., who the history write-up of Bates Co., MO in 1883 stated had served during the War of 1812). I went to Franklin County, PA after doing a Census Index search on CD-ROM of that county for John Browns in 1790; 1800; 1810; 1920; and 1830. I now believe my John Brown, and perhaps a Joseph Brown who were in Bedford Co., PA after the 1790 Federal Census came from either Metal Twp., Franklin Co., PA, created in 1795 from part of old Fannet Twp. (created in 1761 when part of Cumberland Co.) in the "Path Valley"; OR from the "Little Cove" area in Warren Twp. down in the lower SW tip of Franklin county that had once been a part of Bedford County until 1798. The latter location is where many of the German Brethren and others migrated from before occupying the Broad Top area of Woodberry and Hopewell Twps. in Bedford Co.. I found a very interesting document extracted from Franklin County Will Book C, p. 9: "July 23, 1811, Letters of Administration, estate of JOHN BROWN, granted to Mary Brown and John Creamer. Sureties: Edward Crawford and George Steck ---Amount $2000 (which was a lot!) Orphan's Court - Vol. C.B. p. 270. July 23, April 30, 20, 1818. The Petition of JOSEPH BROWN, son of John Brown, late of Metal Twp., states that John Brown died in June 1811, leaving a widow named Mary and issue 6 children viz: i. Elizabeth mar. to John McCuedy (Both since deceased) the said Elizabeth leaving 3 children by her former husband Philip Evert deceased, viz: Polly, Susan, and Rebecca, all minors with Jacob Sherer as guardian; ii. Mary married to Martin Hammon; iii. JOHN; iv. JOSEPH, the Petitioner; v. Rebecca married to Jacob Creemer; vi. Daniel. He died seized of a certain plantation situate in Metal Twp. and joins lands of Rev. Amos McGinley, Anthony Clippinger, Martin Hammon et. al. with a log house and barn thereon erected." -------- The year before his death in the 1810 Federal Census of Metal Twp. there are two JOHN BROWNS enumerated: John Brown (0,1,1,0,1---3,0,1,1,1) He was 45+ years old with wife the same age and two sons living with him: 10-16 and 16-26 and he had a son 10-16 who fits the age group of my John Brown and the other could be your Joseph! --- p. 158; John Brown (3,0,1,1,0--- 1,1,0,?.?) I failed to get the last two entries in the photocopy frame, p. 145. There were NO other BROWNs enumerated in that Twp. that year! A John Brown, Daniel Brown, and Jacob Brown were in Warren Twp. of the same county in 1810: John Brown (0,0,0,0,1 --- 0,1,0,?,? (same problem) p. 153. Jacob Brown (4,2,0,1,0 --- 1,0,0, ?,? (same problem. p. 153. Daniel Brown not copied. -------- In the 1800 Federal Census there were four John Browns enumerated in Franklin County, but only two of them had sons under 10 which would have been the age group of my John Brown: John Brown (1,0,2,0,1 --- 1,2,0,1,0) on p. 933. He was probably the brother of Allen Brown (1,0,1,1,1 --- 0,0,2,0,1) on p. 932 who lived in Metal Twp. See below about Allen Brown. John Brown (2,0,1,0,0 --- 1,0,0,1,0) on p. 852. Related to Lazarus Brown the son of Thomas Brown, a Rev. War vet., with (1.0,1,0,1 --- 0,0,0,1, 0, plus 7 All Others and 3 Slaves on p. 850. This was the Brown Mills area south of Chambersburg. There were no Joseph Browns enumerated., but a David Brown, probably from the Little Cove area, appears with (1,0,0,1,0 --- 1,0,0,1,0) on p. 888. ------ In the 1820 Franklin Co. Census there were two John Browns in Metal Twp., but none in Warren Twp.! John Brown (0,0,0,2,0,1 --- 0,0,0,1,0) This John and his wife, ages 45+, had two sons age 16-25, p. 85; John Brown (0,2,0,0,1,2 --- 0,0,3,0,0 plus 3 in manufacturing (Mills ?) An Elias Brown, Joseph Brown and Stephen Brown are indexed on p. 83 of Metal Twp. There were no John Browns in Warren Twp. and only Eli Brown appears in Warren Twp.. _______ In the 1830 Federal Census there are no more John BROWNs in either Warren or Metal Twps.! There were two Joseph Browns who appear in Metal Twp. on pp. 238 and 241; and an Stebean (sic) Brown who also appears on p. 238. Only Eli Brown remains in warren Twp.. ______ Here are the Franklin Co., PA, Twp. Tax Listings for Brown: 1751 Antrim Twp. :Thomas Brown; 1753 Antrim Twp. : George; Thomas; George; 1753 Peters Twp. : Robert; George; Samuel; 1762 Antrim Twp.: Allen; Thomas; George; 1763 FANNETT Twp.: JOHN BROWN; 1763 Peters Twp.: Samuel 200 w; 1764 Antrim Twp.: Thomas 250 p; George 350 p; Allen; 1764 Peters Twp.: Samuel 200 w; 1768 Antrim Twp.: George 5 negros, 5 horses, 8 cows, 8 sheep, 400p. 70 c; 1768 Fannet Twp,: Allen 300w - 20 cows; George 200 W - 2 cows; JOHN 1 horse - 3 cows and 4 sheep; 1768 Guilford Twp.: Archibald Freeman; 1768 Peters Twp.: James 5 horses, 4 cows, 7 sheep, 2 negros, 150 p., 50 w. 10c; George 150p, 10c; 1769 Fannet Twp.: Allen, 3 horses, 2 cows, 2 servants, 400p, 20c; George 200w, 2c; JOHN 1 horse, 1 cow; 1769 Lurgan Twp.: James Freeman; 1769 Peters Twp.: James 2 horses, 2 cows, 8 sheep, 50p, 50w, 30c; JOHN Freeman; 1770 Antrim Twp.: George 3 horses, 10 cows, 7 sheep, 7 negros, 400o, 89c, 400p, 60c. Note p = Patented land; w = warranted land; and c. = cultivated land. ____________ Excerpts from "Forbes Road - Parnell's Knob to Cowan's Gap" pp. 48 to 49 by Harry E. Foreman, 222 High Street in Chambersburg, PA, 1950 (Note he wrote a seven volume set including the History of Little Cove): "...Five or six members of this early (BROWN) family were in the lower Path Valley at approximately the same time. Allen Brown is particularly noted. From the Johnson Family genealogy of Antrim Twp. quote: ' Allen Brown was from Cookstown, County Tyrone, (Northern) Ireland and settled in Fannett (now Metal \( in 1755, where he operated a store and traded with the Indians.' " I have found evidence that my John M. Brown, who m. Many Amelia FANAGAN (b. in 1808 in Hopewell Twp.) left Hopewell Twp., Bedford County in 1837 for Ohio. He was a miller born in Penn. on 7 Dec. 1796 and his father was named John and also b. in Penn.! Her father was of course b. in Ireland. They went to Clearport, Madison Twp., of Fairfield Co., OH where the family lived until about 1851/2 when they moved to Perry Twp., Hocking Co., OH. There he owned and operated the G. mill shown on the old Perry Twp. map of 1876 as being in the SE corner of Section 5. His 34 acres became the property of his daughter Mary Catherine Brown who married William TURNER who is show as his neighbor on the map of 1876. So I am now trying to find a John Brown in the 1800 Federal Census of Bedford County townships with at least one son 5-10 years old, and at least one son 10-15 years old in the 1810 Federal Census. I know that my John Brown was married by 1830 and had a son born James Brown b. in 1830/1, so he should appear in the 1830 Federal Census of Hopewell Twp. where his wife lived, but he does NOT! He was probably living and working in the mill in nearby Woodberry Twp.. He should appear as the Head of Household or Single Freeman in the 1817 Tax List of Hopewell Twp.he does NOT! There is a John BROWN and a Joseph Brown and a Jacob Brown in Woodberry Twp. on this tax list, but these are accounted for, and are not my John Brown line! In the 1820 Federal Census he should appear as a male aged 26-44 in either in his household or as a child of John Brown his father and he does NOT. The only John Brown in Woodberry Twp. that age was the one adjacent to Christian Souder who was of your line. He was shown with a wife the same age and they had 7 children. My deduction is that my John BROWN didn't arrive in the Woodberry/Hopewell Twp. area until after the 1820 Federal Census, may have only been there a few years during which time the son John Brown married and moved on before the 1830 census. A John Brown, age 30-40, with wife, age 20-30, and son under 5 were living in Colerain Twp. of Bedford County at the time of the 1830 Federal Census, and there were no BROWNS in Colerain Twp. in the 1820 Federal Census! Because of naming and marriage patterns, I am convinced my John BROWNS were of Scotch-Irish and not German descent. The given name of the father and grandfather of my two John Browns may have been William, although John or James are possibilities. I have no Joseph, Jacobs, or Thomas Browns in the family at all in subsequent generations.
