Am going to present my line a little differently than before and see if it rings any bells to anyone.................. Does anyone have a James E. or James U. Brown born 1811 or 1812? Could have been born in GA or AL but since both have been mentioned in various documents they both could just as easily be incorrect. Wasn't going to mention this but since someone did, this BROWN family to this day is "blessed" with several typical Melungeon traits. My father has the ridge at the base of his skull, My son, granddaughter and I have the crooked pinkies (they even have a crooked second toe - The first knuckle bends completely into and under the big toe), most of us have the shovel teeth. Photos of my grandfather (John Martin Brown) are very Indian looking sans the headdress. Most descendants from James E or U have black hair, high cheekbones, olive skin, and although the colors vary from brown, blue and hazel, they all have distinctive, hooded and slightly orientally-slanted eyes, if you can picture that. James E or U Brown's parents may have come from the Carolinas, but I haven't a clue. Older descendants (now deceased) say his mother's name was Elizabeth and and that James E or U was born in GA but one census says he was born GA, another says AL. He married in Marengo Co., AL 1833 to Lucinda Eaves. James E or U's descendants migrated from to AL to Mississippi and then to Arkansas. Some went on to Texas, the family's original destination. The Brown family seemed to travel and move with several of the same families on their trip to the West. Those families include Nolen/Nolan, Eaves, Ingraham, and Ray. Names from the original James E or U that are still handed down to this day are: James, Usrey, Howard, Harvey, Thomas, John, William, Matthew, Martin and George (used in that order with James and Usry being the favorite. Female favorites are Elizabeth, Martha, Jane, Ann/Anna, Faith/Faithy, and Mary.............yeah, I know, those were every Brown's favorites! There are a few unusual names thrown in from time to time that I've never been able to determine an origination ie. Hunter Guston, Usrey (and many variations of that which has been used extensively in every generation), and Sterling/Starling. I'm assuming these were maternal surnames but could possibly have been given by a renegade that just didn't want to follow the normal naming patterns of naming their children after parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Have just found John Luddy Burke's Website on the Burkes and Ansleys which my Brown family is right in the middle of. Haven't been able to find his/their connection to my Browns yet but if any of you are included in that family circle, would you please check your files and see if you can help me find the origin of my elusive James(?) Usrey/Eusrey Brown. If you can help I promise to include you in my will! :) ........And I say James. I'm not even sure it's James but John Burke calls him that and that's good enough for me until I learn differently. Good hunting to you all and LOVE our Roll Call.
