GONE TO GEORGIA by William C Stewart pages 264 & 265 56. BROWN: None of the Brown family was found in the 1820 Jackson County census, but its members are found there before and after that date. In 1820, Aaron, John and Stark Brown were enumerated in Walton County; Benjamin, ezekiel, Lewis, Patrick and William in Madison County; James, Robert and Samuel in Clarke County; Ephraim, Jeptha, John (2), Jospeh and Larkin in Hall County; and James (2), John, Meredith, Richard, Robert and Sally Brown in Habersham County. William Brown had the distinction of being the first man to bring a suit in Jackson County, his case against John Burnett being called for January, 1797. Thomas Brown of Jackson acquired 230 acres in Franklin County Oct. 7, 1797. In 178, Bedford Brown of Wilkes County owned thousands of acres in Wilkes and Franklin (Jackson) Counties and seven slaves, on which he paid taxes, and he purchased more in later years, appearing in the Wilkes records through 1791. On June 10, 1788, he sold to William Hamilton 861 acres in Franklin (Jackson) County which was granted him in 1787 and on Sept 1789 Bedfored obtained from John Gardner 861 acres on Oconee River (Jackson County) which was granted to Brown, sold to Hamilton and then conveyed to Gardner by the sheriff evidently for failure to pay taxes or other commitments. By 1799, Bedford Dougherty on the North fork of Oconee and 300 acres adjoining C. (Sheriff Charles) on Davis Creek, in Capt. John Sheilds' Company, as shown by the tax list. Bedford left a will in Clarke County (Book 1802-1822). Elijah Brown of Pendleton District, SC, (enumerated there in 1790 but not in 1800, although referred to in a deed Dec. 29, 1801---------William Allen to Rober Orr) on April 5, 1790 sold land in Pendleton to William Spiers Brown of Lincoln County, NC, and on July 12, 1791, Elijah bought of John Stringer of Abbeville District, SC, 287 1/2 acres on Camp Creek in Franklin County, GA, granted Dec 19, 1788 to Stringer by Gov. George Handley, which Elijah sold the following Dec 2 to Henry Hamilton of Jackson County. (See 1800 Pendleton Census, pp 90, 102).
