    3. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME? W. J. K. (Kirby) Brown, b. l829, SC, son of William Brown and Arapha (Alpha) Huckaby Brown, on l850 Census of Pickens Co., AL. Kirby married Evelena Hodge, dau. of Bryce and Fanny (Clardy) Hodge in Jan l852, Pickens Co. AL. Kirby and Evelena appear on l860 census of Pickens Co. AL with three sons, James (jim), Neely Belton (N.B.) and David (Dave). Family tradition tells another son, Van was born after the l860 census. Family tradition is that Kirby Brown volunteered and was enrolled in the Confederate Army at Coal Fire, AL. He is said to have died of pneumonia while marching from one encounter to another in Virginia. His commanding officer supposedly left another soldier with him and marched on. Kirby then, according to tradition, died, and the soldier who had been left with him buried him there where he died. I have repeatedly written the Archives of Alabama trying to obtain a military record of Kirby Brown, and they continue to tell me they do not have one. He may have served with the 4th AL Volunteer Mil. as a Pvt. For years I have searched for some proof that he served in the Confederate Army, died while in service in Virginia. Can some of your Civil War buffs or SCV's tell me what I can do to try to establish this family story? Will greatly appreciate any help or suggestions.
