    1. [BROWN] Brown DNA Status Report
    2. Hello again Brown researchers! The Brown/Browne/Braun DNA Study is an amateur genealogical activity, coordinated by an unpaid volunteer staff. The project was founded in late 2001. Most testing is contracted thru a commercial firm, Family Tree DNA of Houston TX, with the majority of lab work done at the University of Arizona. But we happily accept DNA results from other companies and other labs. The project has two primary aims: (1) to encourage the use of DNA analysis for tracing the genealogies of various Brown family lines, including families with variant spellings like Browne, Broun, Browning and Braun; and (2) to lend one another technical support for using DNA information in genealogical research. Direct test participation is limited to males, since females don't carry any sort of DNA that can "track" a surname. On the other hand, about half of our test participants have been recruited and paid for by their female relatives. The project now has results for 478 members, while initial lab work for another five members is currently ongoing. So as the project approaches its seventh anniversary, our tested membership has now reached a grand total of 483! Among the DNA results so far reported, 320 participants have what appear to be "genealogically significant" matches with other members, falling into some 93 relationship groups, while another 158 members are still waiting for their first matches. These statistics also mean that we've so far identified 251 separate, biologically distinct Brown family lines. Although we've always known that the Brown surname had diverse origins, this level of diversity is much greater than many of us would have expected -- all the more so since our project has thus far tested something less than 0.02 per cent of the Brown-surnamed men in the English-speaking world! Results for our currently "matched" participants appear on this page: http://brownsociety.org/browndna/groupresults.html while those who don't yet have a match are listed here: http://www.brownsociety.org/browndna/unique.html Then for those members who have supplied the project with genealogical information, the earliest known Brown ancestors are listed by earliest known locations at this page: http://brownsociety.org/browndna/earliestancestorsgeographic.html (You'll note on these pages that almost all of our participants have allowed us to list their names alongside their DNA results. But we'll also be glad to grant anonymity to any member who so requests.) If you or a member of your Brown family has already had a DNA test, we sincerely urge you to join us. It won't cost a thing, and it may help advance the research on your own Brown ancestry. Or if you'd like details on costs and testing procedures -- either for yourself or for a Brown-surnamed male relative -- just drop me a line! Best regards, Jim Brown (James Armistead Brown, Jr.) Volunteer Project Administrator Brown/Browne/Braun DNA Study DNAforBrowns@aol.com or W5DRP@aol.com

    1. [BROWN] Fw: Dorothy L. Brown, Anderson Co., TN, 1900-1932

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: James and Linda Marrison To: tnanders@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, October 29, 2008 11:39 AM Subject: Dorothy L. Brown All of the following people are deceased. Dorothy L. Brown was born in Marlow, Anderson County about 1900. In Nov 1920 she married Morgan Rufus Mink in Knoxville. The marriage license says both are living in the city. A few years later in Franklin County Dorothy and Morgan have a child born prematurely. The child's death certificate says that Dorothy was born in Anderson County and Morgan was born in Claiborne County. I have had better luck with Morgan. Around 1923 another son, William Morgan Mink, was born in Franklin County and in 1926, Rhea was born. In Feb 1929 Morgan Mink was in jail and Dorothy lived at 909 Dale Street in Kingsport. She gave both boys, Morgan and Rhea, up for adoption. In 1930 Samuel Maupin and his second wife, Ethel, lived at 909 Dale Street. I do not know if Dorothy boarded with the Maupin family or was related. The adoption papers from TN state that the older son, William Morgan Mink, came to the office in 1951 hoping to find information concerning his mother. He said his mother's name was Dorothy Maupin. However, the first death certificate, marriage license, and adoption papers list her as Dorothy Brown from Marlow. Morgan Rufus Mink was out of jail around 1930 and worked for James R. Oliver, Luttrell, Union Co. He wrote letters to the adoption agency in Nashville in 1930 and 1931. The Mink family thinks he died 1932-1933. His brother and brother-in-law went to where he died and buried him there. They believe it was Union Co. The Mink family also believes that Dorothy was already deceased. They think she stepped in front of someone who was going to shoot her brother and was killed. I have corresponded with three families in Anderson, but have not located Dorothy. If you have any clues, please let me know. I am sorry this letter is so long. Thank you. Linda

    1. [BROWN] WILLIAM C. BROWN
    2. Dorothy Hagerty
    3. A WILLIAM C. BROWN was born in Middletown Rhode Island on 11 April, 1792. The "C" could stand for Coggeshall, but with all the information I've gathered, I'm beginning to doubt he's the one. The William C Brown I need was in Cazenovia, NY by 1820 where he had a family. Children were Mary, Helen, John, Sarah and possibly Persis and others. In 1840 William C. is in Butler, Wayne County, NY. 1850 finds him potentially in a Poor Farm in Barnard, VT. In 1860 he is living with his daughter, Mary, and her husband, George Stewart, in Chelsea, Sharon, Michigan. All of this data is based on the consistency of his birth date - 1792 - and location - Rhode Island. If this is indeed WILLIAM COGGESHALL BROWN, his father would have been Peleg Brown and mother, Mary Cornel Coggeshall. A William C. Brown lived in Stonington, CT in 1870, and was 78, b. Rhode Island, which correlates with birth date and location. I would appreciate any and all suggestions and information. Dorothy Hagerty

    2. _JKWilsonFl@aol.col_ (mailto:JKWilsonFl@aol.col) . Ellen, I feel sure that all Brookshire families are related because there was only one Brookshire family emigrating to Fannin County, Ga., from Wilkes County, N.C. It was James Brookshire, last child of William Brookshire II and Mary Ann Marlow. James and family lived in Dial, Ga. He sold his 160-acre farm to George Wesley Davis and moved to Ellijay, Ga. He was buried in Ellijay, Ga. James was a brother to George Wesley Davis' wife Martha Brookshire. He also was an uncle of Rebecca (Brown) German, wife of Thomas Didamus German Sr. and Elizabeth (Brown) German, wife of Charles German. His wife was Elizabeth Tilley. All the people emigrated to Fannin County, Ga. from Wilkes County, N.C., in around the 1850s. The Tilleys lived in King Creek, N.C. **************New MapQuest Local shows what's happening at your destination. Dining, Movies, Events, News & more. Try it out! 3. I have a grandfather who was James Frank Brown. He was born ca 1850 and died after 1920. Born in Wilkes County NC and died in Tazewell County VA. I had thought his father was George W. Brown, but other descendants tell me that James Frank died young and left no children. I was sure he was descended from Johan Braun (John Brown) in Wilkes County, but have hit brick walls trying to prove that. I am descended from Johan through the Sparks line. James Frank Brown married Martha H. Sparks. Any Clues??? James Frank listed his daughter's marriage license as J. Frank Brown. He and Martha lived in Ashe County NC in 1880. Sometime after that, they moved to Tazewell County VA. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 2. Thanks for your info on Brookshire Ancestry. Mary Faye Brookshire born in Fannin Co., Ga about 1942-43 is the daughter of Brooke Brookshire and Bessie Griggs who married in Fannin Co., Ga. Bessie's parents were L. M. Griggs and Mary last name unknown. I do not have any info on her Brookshire line just thought it was unusual you inquiring on Brown who married a Brookshire. Speaking of Browns, I am a descendant of John (M) Jack Brown who married Susannah Nettles of Edgefield Co., S. C. They lived in Georgia for a while before settling in Starke, Bradford Co., Florida. I have not been able to go past JOhn M. Brown to establish his parentage or the Nettles lines. Anyway, good hunting on your Browns and Brookshire family. Sorry I could not be of any help. Starting about 1838 in Indiana birth of a Johnson child. On the Brown's starting in Indiana 1852 in Samuel; Lots more tracking to do I sure could use some help or ideas on how to challenge this.
