    1. [BROWN] BROWN Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Isabelle BROWN which was taken at the Mather & Gaughan Studio in "Soo" Michigan. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with little Isabelle less than 1 year old at the time it was taken. In addition to her name, someone has written "Sault Ste. Marie, Mich." and "APTED Married" on the back of the photograph. I am guessing based on the note that Isabelle's married name was APTED. Thanks for a BROWN Family Researcher we know the following about Isabelle: Annie Isabelle BROWN was b. 1892 in MI to parents William H. and Sarah Ann BROWN She married William APTED whose brother was Stephen APTED I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    1. [BROWN] Rebecca (Rachel) Brown, married twice, to ?? Brown, then to John Givens.
    2. Joe Duke
    3. Hello, Brown Family searchers. According to family information, Rebecca BROWN was b. ca. 1716, place not known, and became the wife of a man whose surname was BROWN. Apparently, husband ?? BROWN died, and then, Rebecca became the wife of John GIVENS, a young immigrant from Ireland, who came here with his family, and settled in Rowan Co., NC. I have assumed that the BROWN family lived in the area of Rowan Co., NC, but that may be subject to better facts! This marriage was a successful one, since there were nine children who became adults of it. My ancestor in the family was James GIVENS, who was the sixth son, and who married Patsy MILLER later. The purpose of this message is to place a question before you all. Who were the parents of Rebecca BROWN? She is also called Rachel in some of the family histories, but in none of them are her parents named! At some point later in their marriage, John and Rebecca moved to near-by Mecklenburg Co., where the last five of their nine children were born. I seek your kind help in learning the names of her parents, the BROWN family!! Thanks for your interest! Joe DUKE

    1. [BROWN] Rebecca BROWN, b. ca. 1727, North Carolina?
    2. Joe Duke
    3. John GIVENS was born in Ireland ca. 1727, migrated to the Colonies, and was married in North Carolina, no date known, to Rebecca BROWN. Were Rebecca and her parents also immigrants at that same time? Or had they arrived, earlier? What were the names of Rebecca's parents? I find it very helpful to know her last name, since many of the ladies' maiden surnames in those years have been lost or not properly recorded!! So, if anyone might be able to help me with this question, I will surely appreciate any such help. Thanks, in advance!! Joe DUKE

    1. [BROWN] John CLAYTON & Alice MYRES' family Bible info
    2. Dale Updike
    3. Hello all, Tonight I updated my RootsWeb site with all the hand-written genealogical information that is in the family Bible of John Clayton & Alice Myres. The process was intensive, even for me with 30+ years experience working with letters, words, numbers in dozens of fonts and font types! I was a sign-painter by trade, and have been doing genealogy for about 50 years, so am quite familiar with reading old handwriting too. The main problem is that a lot of the text was faded quite badly. Another obstacle was that the entries were not all done by the same person (some was nice penmanship, and some wasn't), and capital letters were sometimes very difficult to decide upon. This family were Quakers, so often did not even use their actual names in recording this stuff, using just initials like "J.C." for John Clayton and "L.C." for his wife Leah, etc. was normal procedure here. To make matters even more difficult, sometimes some of the initials were not capitalized. I was able to adjust the lightness/darkness, the color intensity, and the contrast, etc., which was a /tremendous/ help! The 'formulae' used by them to record their names and dates was not how you and I would do it today, but once I caught on it was no problem, and actually helped me make out certain words. The images on the eBay site are larger now than what were there at first. Since I am /not the owner of the Bible or the original scans/ I am hesitant to forward the ones they sent to me to anyone; I just don't feel right about it. I hope that doesn't offend anybody, as I am ALWAYS willing to share my own genealogical information to all who ask (that's why I am inviting anyone to use the actual new dates from my site posted below). The owners have been very complimentary and generous with me, and some of you too, and I don't want to offend them - even a little bit. Anyway, here is John Clayton & Alice Myres' family page: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=updike&id=I14229 I suggest clicking on the Register button in order to get the dates for their children and some grandchildren; be sure to check the NOTES for some of them too. I think I forgot to indicate the source for some of the dates, which I will add later. The sellers tried to interest the British Royal family in it, since the late Princess Diana Spencer is also a descendant, as is the presidential Nixon family. The Royals either didn't seem interested or did not convey the info to the right people, like Diana's brother Charles, who has done a family history of the Spencers. It would be wonderful if a number of descendants could go together on it, to keep it in the family. I'll respond to the emails I received from some of you later this week. We've had company, and a huge backlog of yardwork that needs to be done (due to the loooong stretch of rainy weather). Enjoy! Dale Updike Saskatchewan, Canada

    1. [BROWN] Free DNA Tests for Scots and Ulster Browns
    2. The Brown DNA Study is pleased to offer at least 20 free genealogical DNA tests for men born in Scotland and Ulster. The tests will be open to Scots and Ulster Scots males who carry the "Brown" surname or a recognized variant like Broun, Brun or Browne, and whose earliest known Brown/Broun/Browne ancestors also were born in Scotland or Ulster. The program is now accepting applications, and we anticipate that most testing will take place during the latter months of 2009. All funds for this testing have been contributed by members of the Brown DNA Study. Most of these donors are Scots’ descendants, and they hope DNA matching will help to locate their “long-lost” Brown/Broun/Browne cousins in the UK and Ireland. Our fondest desire, moreover, is that matches discovered via this program eventually will help pinpoint the places in Scotland where our own Brown/Broun/Browne ancestors lived centuries ago. Applicants for the free tests are asked to supply information on their earliest known Brown/Broun/Browne ancestors. If you apply, you also should be willing for the Brown DNA Study to display this genealogical information along with your DNA marker values at the Study’s website. Names and addresses of applicants will not be posted, however, for any test participants who request confidentiality. Acceptance into this testing program cannot be guaranteed to all applicants. The Brown DNA Study reserves sole discretion to turn down applications where sufficient information isn’t submitted, or where the applicant appears not to meet our basic qualifications. In the event more than 20 applications are received, the project may judge on competitive grounds which applicants are best qualified for testing. If you would like to apply now for your own free test, or for a free test by one of your Brown-surnamed male relatives, please send us (1) the full name of the man to be tested including middle name (if any); (2) his place of birth in Scotland or Ulster; and (3) for his earliest proven Brown/Broun/Browne male ancestor, at least the ancestor's name, place of birth and date of birth. Other information on the earliest proven Brown ancestor also will be welcome, although it's not required. You may email your application to DNAforBrowns@aol.com. Or if you're not ready to apply and simply have questions, please contact us at the address just given. In any event, we hope to make your acquaintance! 3. The Kansas City Public Library has quite a bit about Darius - including - Photo and bio of Darius Brown (1869-1938), mayor of Kansas City in 1910-1911 as well as city attorney and circuit judge. Born in Kansas and coming to Kansas City in 1891, residing at 3641 Wyandotte Street... There certainly is no shortage of info on him is there --- There is a reference to her in The Santa Fe Magazine By Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company 1880 Carbondale, Osage KS John Prescott 39 PA ENG ENG A MINER Ella J. Prescott 34 PA PA PA Cooper Prescott 14 PA Martha Prescott 12 KS Laura Pescott 10 Lina Prescott 8 Edna Prescott 6 Nellie Prescott 4 North H. Prescott 1 It would look like John and Ella met in PA - since Cooper is born in PA - and Martha is born in KS then they must have moved from PA to KS between 1866 and 1868. I suggest you work Ancestry and try to find the father in 1850 - 60 - 70 - etc. try to track each child. Continue to look for other clues - military records - directories - obits - an obit may mention a female relative with her married name - mention a place - When you don't find what you think it right in the census index try other spellings - try searching for just the first name leaving the last name blank - (in the correct town) sometimes the spelling with be wrong or the hand writing of the census taker too hard to read. Try Google Books - looking for "Cooper Prescott" or what ever - the odd names are some times easier to track than others. Hunt down every person - ever possibility until you find someone who knows what you want or find a magic clue which helps you. Recently I found an account book for an ancestor - Hervey Brown born 1803 Rensselaerville, Albany Co. NY died 1882 Schoharie, Schoharie Co. NY - and although most of the pages were simply - how much rye or what he milled or who's pants he hemmed - there was a page with family history AND - there were some pages where his niece left some key family history notes. One or two clues - gave me a flood of new info on him - his sons - his relatives. MY PHILOSOPHY - IF YOU CAN'T SEE STRAIGHT AHEAD OF YOU BECAUSE THERE IS A TREE IN THE WAY - YOU NEED TO FIND SOMEONE WHO IS (or was) STANDING TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT OF THAT TREE WHO CAN SEE AROUND IT WHO CAN TELL YOU WHAT IS ON THE OTHER SIDE. Don't keep walking straight into the tree - find a way to look beyond from other points of view. RMB PS - when I think of Prescott you know who I think of don't you ??? George Prescott Walker Bush - this that right ? not sure if which one - but there are Prescotts in that family and they are very well researched - on line too. I know because I'm a Jenne - and the Bushes - both George 41 and Barbara his wife are related to the Jenne family of Plymouth. Be sure to scour though Prescott family histories.
