Here is the address to Ysearch: http://www.ysearch.org/ If you were tested somewhere other than FTDNA, you can open an account by clicking the "Create a New User" tab. If you were tested at FTDNA, do not open your account this way. Create your account from within your FTDNA member page. Not only is this way easier, because the FTDNA server will automatically transfer your results to your Ysearch account (entering them manually is tedious and prone to errors), it will link your FTDNA account with your Ysearch account, making it easier to access Ysearch. To do so... First, log in to your FTDNA member page. Over towards the bottom left, click the link to Ysearch.org, listed under the heading, "Tools." I can't walk you through the rest of the steps because I'm already a member (via my father's test). The server recognizes me and keeps offering up the page for me to enter my existing UserID and password, instead of offering the form to create a new account. But once you've clicked the Ysearch.org link, you should be able to manage OK by following the instructions given. FTDNA is the "900-lb gorilla" of DNA testing, but I'm always reluctant to tout them because I have six projects based there (five surname projects and a regional project), so obviously I'm biased towards them. Then again, maybe that's testimonial enough, that I chose FTDNA as the place to base my projects after carefully studying all the options. By all means, do not let the price of an introductory test be the only factor considered when choosing a lab. In the end, it can be false economy. Quite a number of my project members first got tested somewhere else, then were so dissatisfied, they ended up getting tested, again, at FTDNA, making their basic testing far more expensive than it needed to be. I have quite a bit of general information on my personal web site, including introductory information, that I've built up over the years as an aid to my project members. You may find some of it useful. http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/DNA-hub.shtml Good hunting, Diana P.S. There is a parallel site for mtDNA testing called mitoSearch: http://www.mitosearch.org/ If you want a UserID to play with at mitoSearch, mine is A4ABX. If you would like to play with a UserID at Ysearch, my father's is KBBX2. His mtDNA results were uploaded to mitoSearch, too, and it's the same UserID -- another benefit of joining from your FTDNA member page. > -----Original Message----- > From: brown-bounces@rootsweb.com On Behalf Of nbacton@aol.com > Sent: Saturday, December 19, 2009 4:25 PM > To: brown@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [BROWN] All DNA testees > > I am not familiar with Ysearch. Now that more labs are starting to do the testing we need a place to be able to compare the results. FamilyTreeDNA has over 300 Browns in their Brown project. I haven't been able to find out how many Ancestry.com has and have no idea about the other labs. Results are no good if you can't compare them. FamilyTreeDNA.com also has a site called www.YSearch.org where anyone from any lab can upload their results and search by matching results or by name. You don't have to have tested at their lab and it is free. I would like to see if we can either get everyone on the list who has tested to upload their results to either that site or Ancestry.com (though I think you have to be a subscriber there, I am) or let us know if there is another site that can be viewed for comparison with their DNA. My "impression" is that if you do, you're basically giving them the data to use as they see fit, including keeping it and republishing it. [Does someone know for certain?] At Ysearch, you can remove your data any time you want. You can also remove yourself from the FTDNA database any time you want, even if you were tested there, because they make no claim of ownership of your data (or your sample). Wherever you decide to get tested or to upload your data, make certain you are aware of whether you are surrendering legal title it, assuming you care one way or another. Test results without a lineage are, as you know, virtually useless, so I am very persistent in my projects to get good lineages associated with the results. Not all project admins make such an effort, however, so it's a matter of luck how useful results are from different projects. I wish those admins who aren't doing it would either take on a co-admin or two -- or give up the project and let someone else run it. But if they don't, the alternative is for us to upload to Ysearch, including a GEDCOM of the patrilineal line. Wow! It would be such a useful database if everyone did it! You said it much better than I did! I co-administer the Mosley/Moseley DNA project at FamilytreeDNA.com and we have tried to get pedigrees of all, a few have slipped through as we have not yet blocked entry into the project without one. We e-mail all our members with a chart of pedigrees combined with the DNA markers. It makes it so much easier to see what is going on. We have 60+ members, so it is not nearly as big as the Brown group. Don't feel bad about being in the "unassigned" group. About 40% of all test subjects have no match "out of the gate." The best way to speed up getting a match is to examine your paper pedigree and start tracking down "paper cousins" to test. I would even begin with a first or second cousin. One basic question everyone needs to answer is whether they have an NPE in their lineage. http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/General/NPE_Resolutions.shtml I don't want to alarm you, but about 10% of people tested turn out NOT to match other descendants of their paper ancestor (i.e., they have an NPE), so it's not an idle question to answer. With regard to mtDNA, if you test just your HVR1 and HVR2 (HyperVariable Regions 1 and 2), you will likely be placing yourself in a rather large group of women. As you say, it only broadly points to your deep roots. However, if you test your mtDNA FGS (Full Genetic Sequence), you can greatly narrow down the possibilities. Not enough people have as yet tested their FGS for there to be a useful database to search, but eventually there will be. I've tested my FGS, and the only person I match, so far, is a first cousin: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/mtDNA-T-haplotree-DGM.shtml Diana > -----Original Message----- > From: brown-bounces@rootsweb.com On Behalf Of Barbara Brown Allen > Sent: Saturday, December 19, 2009 12:27 PM > To: brown@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [BROWN] All DNA testees > > Hello BROWNs: This DNA business has been one of the most > frustrating experiences of my life! It does sound like your William has an "NPE," a "non-paternal event" (i.e., a hidden adoption or illicit paternity) in his patrilineal line. But, as long as you aren't crushed by finding out you're not a BROWN, you're actually lucky. It's going to be much easier to discover your ancestry as a MAXWELL or a RAMSEY than it would be as a BROWN. Obviously, either the MAXWELL or the RAMSEY has an NPE in his lineage, too. You may be interested in the resolution of some NPE's from my projects: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/General/NPE_Resolutions.shtml And who knows? In the end, all the MAXWELLs and RAMSEYs could turn out to be BROWNs! I run five DNA surname projects at FTDNA, and I encourage all my members to upload to Ysearch. I have also subsidized a couple of dozen tests, always with the stipulation that a requirement for the subsidy is uploading to Ysearch. So, yes, I think Ysearch is now, and will continue to be, the best "general" database to use for uploading and searching. Do be careful about uploading to Ancestry. I have an Elijah Barton Brown born in 1823 but in Saratoga County, NY. He could possibly be the son of one of Wright S. Brown's children...I know he had a Joseph but can not tell you anything more about him. My Browns lived in Stillwater and Saratoga until 1808 when they migrated to Milo, Yates Co. NY. The Brown Genealogical Society does coordinate the Brown DNA study with FamilyTreeDNA. Jim Brown is the name of the coordinator and he is very good. Frank Brown Kansas City I believe that the Parke Society coordinates all the Park/e/s DNA results. Maybe the Brown Society would do something similar? Hello BROWNs: This DNA business has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my life! My brother Blake Brown volunteered his DNA for me, and so far we have not connected with ANYONE, and in fact, my brother is in the "unique group" because of it. He is haplogroup R1a; kit number is 41860. I would LOVE to meet a BROWN with an R1a halplogroup designation. Also, don't forget The Brown Society at brownsociety.org where you can find my brother's test results. And then, of course, I just had to do my mtDNA test, didn't I? Well, those results show only migration patterns, ethnic & geographic origins. I can't imagine ever connecting with a female relative based on the mtDNA results. Good luck, everyone! FamilyTreeDNA is the place where my study was done in the Brown DNA project. I did a 37 marker test and had several 25/25 and 37/37 matches. The higher the markers tested the more Ramsey and Maxwell people there are. I cannot locate my information to access the site right now so cannot be more specific. Perhaps my 2nd. great grandfather was a traveling man, who knows? His name was William Brown which is of little help pinning him down. Might as well be John Jones. Frank Brown Kansas City My husband, Allen, tested with FamilyTreeDNA.com and has 4 matches there (one 25/25, and 3 67/67) I have also uploaded his results to the Ancestry.com DNA database, no matches there and no input from other Browns there. For those who have tested it is then obvious if a line is yours or not. What do you all think? I believe that the Parke Society coordinates all the Park/e/s DNA results. Maybe the Brown Society would do something similar? My husband, Allen, tested with FamilyTreeDNA.com and has 4 matches there (one 25/25, and 3 67/67) I have also uploaded his results to the Ancestry.com DNA database, no matches there and no input from other Browns there. For those who have tested it is then obvious if a line is yours or not. What do you all think?
