    1. [BROWN] Randolph Co. Deed Abstracts/Brown
    2. I went last week to Randolph Co Library and spent 3 1/2 days searching for info on Browns and Woods trying to determine the parentage of my gg grandfather John Brown b. 1799. He married Sarah Wood in 1825. They lived in Knox Co. TN but their roots were in Randolph Co., NC. Well, 3 1/2 days was not near enough time to go through all the information that is there but I am going to post some deed abstracts on the list in the hopes that some of you have information on the people involved as to their children, siblings etc. that will help me put this puzzle together. I am especially interested in the Wm Brown mentioned in most of them. Does anyone know the descendants of this Wm Brown? Your help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Carol Brown Key There was a plot survey showing land granted to Daniel Brown in 1759. It states it was in Orange Co... NC (but from the drawing it looks like the same area we were in in Randolph Co. it was probably Orange Co in 1759) Anyway, it says "This plan represents a tract of land surveyed for Daniel Brown the South Side of Deep River (but appears to be west of the river) Beginning at Wm Cox corner spanish oaks by the river then running along his line west 50 cha to his corner then west 30 cha to a black Oak then south 30 cha to a black oak then east 30 1/2 cha to a spanish oak then south 51 cha to a black oak then east 75 cha to two gums by the river then up the river to the beginning containing five hundred and ninety five acre of land Survey 13th of October 1759. Signed W. Charton? (name is hard to read) Witnesses were Chas. Cox, Ths Cox and Arthur Mundy The next oldest is a deed from a Mary Rains to a Wm Brown , the image on the copy is very, very dim and impossible to read in places. It does mention some creek but can't make out which one. It was 50 acres for $125. Witnessed by (unreadable) Johnston and James Garner? not sure of Garner, but that is what it looks like. On the index there was another one from Mary Rains to Wm in the same yr for 160 acres but I did not make a copy of that one as it was dim also. State of NC grant #1640 April 25 1794 To Frederick Brown 100 acres on the waters of Sandy Creek near Harmon Rd then South to post oak on S. Brown's old Corner. Registered Jan 17, 1802 Witness was Benjamin Williams. Grant to William Brown in Nov 26 1799 100 acres on the waters of Crooked Creek. State of NC to Daniel Brown in 1793 100 acres. This one was so black could not read description or witnesses. Deed from George Tillery to Michael Brown on Sandy Creek beginning at a hickory on Frederick Brown's line to said Michael Brown's corner by the Quaker Road. 97 acres August Term of 1801. >From Daniel Brown of Wilks County to William Brown of Randolph Nov 15 1803 land on the South Side of Deep River beginning at a spanish oak on Charles Moffitts corner .........to Samuel Brown's corner. 3. I just saw a reference to Susanna and Susannah Brown. 1700 Susanna Brown, court record, Northumberland Co., Va. 1701 Susannah Brown, " " " " " It just says "coming". The records had not yet been verified and so were not recorded but were coming on the Northern Neck page. 1. [BROWN] Ernest BROWN Durham England B c 1890
    2. One of my great great aunts, Margaret FOSTER/FORSTER married Ernest BROWN some time around 1910. Margaret was one of ten children, the family originating in Stanhope, Weardale, England but later moving on to Consett, Durham where the family farmed. The marriage could have taken place in the Lanchester or Weardale districts, probably the former. They had two known children - Ernest and Millicent? I realise it is very little to go on but I have photos to share if we can establish a connection. Elaine

    1. [BROWN] Sharing: Guion Miller, Swetland, and Henderson rolls
    2. Scott and Trisha Neal
    3. I have the Browns copied from the above Indian rolls, and will gladly share if you have a name you'd like me to look up. The Guion Miller roll is from 1909, the Henderson from 1835, and the Swetland from 1869. Please bear in mind there isn't much info here except a name on a list, but if you have a Brown that's from the correct time period and a Native American, they may be on here. (Also narrows it down if they were living in OK at the time, but there's a FEW listed from GA, AL, and TN.) And if anyone has any information on Emily Wren Brown, born 1806? 1814? in Williamson, TN, married Marshall Dodson 28 March 1832, please let me know. I have lots on Marshall and their children, but nothing for Emily. Would like to know if the Brown was from another husband, which seems likely to me, and if they had any children, etc. All those things we all want to know! Trisha :)

    1. [BROWN] James Brown b. 1816 OH or KY
    2. Carol Hoskins
    3. I've been asked to repost my James Brown info so here goes. James Brown over the age of 21 married Kizziah Peterson over the age of 18 in Charleston, Coles Co., IL 24 July 1838. They had applied for the marriage license in April 1838. this info tells me they lived there and were not just passing through. I believe we have found Kizziah's parents in Jasper Co., IL on the 1835 State census. James and Kizziah are missing from records of Coles Co from that marriage date on. I have not been able to find them in IL yet but there are still a few Counties that list James Brown that haven't been search. Next I found James and Kizziah Peterson Brown in Saline Co., AR on the 1850 census with their sons. Daughter Mary A. Brown b. 11 June 1839 died in 11 Jan 1844 We believe in IL. George Washington Brown b. 7 April 1842 Positive IL but don't know where. died 6 Nov 1907 CA wife Mary White and they had 12 children (I have a list of descendants and contact with 2 on line). William Thomas Brown b. 2 Mar 1844 IL d. 17 May 1871 CA married Maggie Findley and they had 2 children (have not found descendants). Isaac Francis or Franklin Brown b. 6 Mar 1846 Saline Co., AR d. 22 Nov 1885 CA. married widow Martha (Bilyeu) Reddick in Taylorville, Christian Co., IL 1869. They had at least 4 children possibly more last contact was a Brown family reunion in 1926. I have not found any descendants to date. John Morgan Brown b. 10 Feb 1848 Saline Co., AR d. 27 Aug 1933 CA. John never married and shares his mother's tombstone. James listed OH as birth place and that he was 34. Kizziah was born in IN and listed as 33. After the 1850 census My Great Grand Father was born. James Harvey Brown b. 27 July 1851 Saline Co., AR d. 14 Feb 1851 CA married Matilda Cozens and had 8 children (I knew them all and know all the descendants) James and Kizziah owned land in Saline Co., AR but in 1852 they had gone by Wagon Train to Stockton CA. 1860 James and Kizziah were living in Castoria, San Joaquin Co., CA and were found on that Census with there whole family. the boys on the AR census plus others born later than 1850. James listed KY as birthplace and 43 Kizziah was still IN and 42. Squire A. Brown b. 1 Mar 1854 CA d. 12 April 1917 married Ella and they had 2 children. (I have not been able to find descendants) Sarah Ann Brown b. 19 April 1856 d. 6 May 1941 married Jacob Hunsucker one daughter and she died when she was 16. (No descendants at all). Edward Alexander Brown b. 1 April 1858 Ca d. 22 Feb 1943 married Abbie. they had three children and we have found a Granddaughter still alive but her son doesn't know anything about this family. Andrew Jackson Brown b. after the census was taken 19 Sept 1860 d. 10 April 1928 CA married Mae and I have no other info on this couple. 1870 San Joaquin Co., CA census Kizziah is head of house hold with her unmarried children. 1880 San Joaquin Co., CA census Kizziah is listed as widow and living with her youngest children. We have lost any mention of James. He has just disappeared. We have gone through obits of James Browns. Right now I am waiting on a James T. Brown obit from the Sacramento Bee which stated James T. Brown died 5 may 1870 in Jackson, CA. Jackson is now in Amador Co., CA. and is not that far from Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA. He could have been mining and away from home. 3. Hi Carol, Well, since Lincoln went to Coles County, IL and my Browns seem to have traipsed around with him and others a few times....first to Spencer Co, IN and then north, I have the feeling that some of those Brown in Coles County, IN are related. The Mullens emailed me a bio on two Brown brothers from Hardin Co., KY who lived in Coles Co, IL; but unfortunately they were not mine. But if you can send me (or post it to the Brown list) the information on that James Brown, I would appreciate it. My James was born about 1750, should have been older than 60-70 in 1840; but perhaps it is another relative. (Of course, who knows who gave the info to the census taker?) I collect such stuff and sometimes it just opens up who these people are. Thanks again, Kathie > > I know I have said this before but maybe not directly to you. > > There is a James Brown in Coles Co., IL on page 40 of the 1840 census that is 60 - 70 years of age with a female that is 20 - 30 years of age. 1. [BROWN] Browns in IL
    2. Carol Hoskins
    3. Rita, I know there is a Nicholas Brown somewhere around this same area. I'll dig through my stuff and see if I can find the info. Months ago probably closer to a year ago I posted all the Browns that were close to Coles/Cumberland area. Part of Coles Co., became Cumberland Co in 1843. The Court House in Cumberland burned about 1875 so all earlier info was lost completely. My James Brown born in 1816 listed on the 1850 Census that he was born in OH then in the 1860 Census he listed KY. So it hasn't been easy trying to fit him into another Brown family. Your profile of Browns does fit with the confusing records I have for My James. Did any of your Browns go on to AR or CA like my James? Carol Brown Hoskins Buffalo, WY hoskins@trib.com

    2. Rita Werner
    3. I have BROWN ancestors in Cumberland Co., IL in the mid 1800's, although none of the Coles Co. names Carol Hoskins has listed for earlier in the 1800's seems to match with ancestors of my EDWARD and NICHOLAS BROWN in Cumberland Co., IL. Also, Edward's brother, BAZZEL, settled in Cumberland Co., IL Edward was born in Madison Co., KY, moved to Fairfield Co., OH where Nicholas was born, then both were in Cumberland Co., IL by the start of the Civil War in the 1860s. Does anyone on this list have Browns from Madison Co., KY in the early 1800's? Or in Fairfield and Licking Co. OH by 1835? How about Cumberland Co., IL Brown's? Also would like to hear from anyone who had Brown's in HARDIN Co., KY marrying into the MATTHEWS family there. Thank you. Rita (Brown) Werner Taylorville, IL

    1. [BROWN] A Brown line of Hardin/Nelson/LaRue County, KY
    2. M. Kathleen Felsted
    3. Hello Brown researchers, Thought I would update you on my James Brown and Mary Matchett line. (she born 1749, he about same time). Mary is buried in the Brown & Thomas Cemetery, LaRue Co, KY (online). We do not know where James Brown ended up. James and Samuel Brown were in Nelson County as early as 1785 and James bought land on the Rolling Fork River. By tracking the Hardin Co., KY tax records, I discovered that James and Mary had the following boys: 1. James, Jr, b. 1780, who married Nancy Ash, daughter of Henry Ash and his first wife. They lived and died on the Rolling Fork and James is buried in the Brown & Thomas Cemetery in LaRue County, KY. 2. John, b. 1781. Believe he might have married Anna Cotten. NFI If he married Anna Cotten, this is Mary Ann Shoemaker's line. 3. Joseph, b. 1785, married Susannah Carter in 1808 in Hardin Co., KY. My direct line and I have posted information about him before. They died in Porter Co., IN. These are the girl children of James and Mary: 4. Rachael Brown md John Howell in 1820 in Hardin Co., This was John's second marriage. A bio on a Howell relative gave me Rachael's parents as James and Mary Hatchett. 5. Elizabeth Brown md Henry Ash (his second marriage). They stayed in Larue Co. This is Carolyn Wimp's direct line. 6. Polly Brown md Moses Thomas. They owned property on Rolling Fork and stayed there. 7. Possible daughter: Sarah Brown who married John Jackson. John Jackson was the surety for Rachael Brown and John Howell and John Jackson's other dealings with the Brown family lead us to believe these lines are related. James did not leave a will in Hardin/Nelson/LaRue County that I have found. He bought land for his son James, Jr but I have not discovered yet how he disposed of his own land (and he owned a lot!). Not sure which Samuel Brown is a relative of James: perhaps both? I have not checked the ACTUAL tax records of Nelson Co. I started with the Hardin Co records and only got as far as 1811. It is possible that other sons showed up earlier than 1793, when Hardin Co. records started. It is possible that one Samuel was James' brother and the other was James' son. I would love to correspond with others who are researching this line. Kathie

    2. Carol Hoskins
    3. Kathie, I know I have said this before but maybe not directly to you. There is a James Brown in Coles Co., IL on page 40 of the 1840 census that is 60 - 70 years of age with a female that is 20 - 30 years of age. I have found no other info on this James. I have the whole 1840 Census for Coles Co.,IL and there are several Browns listed; A. C. Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Frances Brown, Henry W. Brown, Job W. Brown (bought land when he lived in Edgar Co., IL in 1838), John Brown, Joseph Brown, Jordon, Brown (ended up in Cumberland Co., and is listed in a book called Johnstown Story), Rebecca Brown, and William Brown (who bought land in 1839). If anyone wants the profile of households on any of these Browns, Please let me know. Hardin Co., KY is not that far from Coles, Co., IL. I know you seem to have them all in KY and no where else. But trying to find out about these other Browns, I have learned that most of them came from KY. Still looking for my James Brown b. Nov. 1816.
