I have been researching a string of John Browns in PA who I have traced back to 1796, and possibly further. who lived in Hopewell Twp. of Bedford Co.. Perhaps some of these uncovered Browns are related to other list members. Because of the analysis below I started to look out of Bedford Co., PA for my two John Browns (John M. Brown , b. Dec. 7, 1796 in Penn., and his father, John Brown also b. in Penn., who the history write-up of Bates Co., MO in 1883 stated had served during the War of 1812). I went to Franklin County, PA after doing a Census Index search on CD-ROM of that county for John Browns in 1790; 1800; 1810; 1920; and 1830. I now believe my John Brown, and perhaps a Joseph Brown who were in Bedford Co., PA after the 1790 Federal Census came from either Metal Twp., Franklin Co., PA, created in 1795 from part of old Fannet Twp. (created in 1761 when part of Cumberland Co.) in the "Path Valley"; OR from the "Little Cove" area in Warren Twp. down in the lower SW tip of Franklin county that had once been a part of Bedford County until 1798. The latter location is where many of the German Brethren and others migrated from before occupying the Broad Top area of Woodberry and Hopewell Twps. in Bedford Co.. I found a very interesting document extracted from Franklin County Will Book C, p. 9: "July 23, 1811, Letters of Administration, estate of JOHN BROWN, granted to Mary Brown and John Creamer. Sureties: Edward Crawford and George Steck ---Amount $2000 (which was a lot!) Orphan's Court - Vol. C.B. p. 270. July 23, April 30, 20, 1818. The Petition of JOSEPH BROWN, son of John Brown, late of Metal Twp., states that John Brown died in June 1811, leaving a widow named Mary and issue 6 children viz: i. Elizabeth mar. to John McCuedy (Both since deceased) the said Elizabeth leaving 3 children by her former husband Philip Evert deceased, viz: Polly, Susan, and Rebecca, all minors with Jacob Sherer as guardian; ii. Mary married to Martin Hammon; iii. JOHN; iv. JOSEPH, the Petitioner; v. Rebecca married to Jacob Creemer; vi. Daniel. He died seized of a certain plantation situate in Metal Twp. and joins lands of Rev. Amos McGinley, Anthony Clippinger, Martin Hammon et. al. with a log house and barn thereon erected." -------- The year before his death in the 1810 Federal Census of Metal Twp. there are two JOHN BROWNS enumerated: John Brown (0,1,1,0,1---3,0,1,1,1) He was 45+ years old with wife the same age and two sons living with him: 10-16 and 16-26 and he had a son 10-16 who fits the age group of my John Brown and the other could be your Joseph! --- p. 158; John Brown (3,0,1,1,0--- 1,1,0,?.?) I failed to get the last two entries in the photocopy frame, p. 145. There were NO other BROWNs enumerated in that Twp. that year! A John Brown, Daniel Brown, and Jacob Brown were in Warren Twp. of the same county in 1810: John Brown (0,0,0,0,1 --- 0,1,0,?,? (same problem) p. 153. Jacob Brown (4,2,0,1,0 --- 1,0,0, ?,? (same problem. p. 153. Daniel Brown not copied. -------- In the 1800 Federal Census there were four John Browns enumerated in Franklin County, but only two of them had sons under 10 which would have been the age group of my John Brown: John Brown (1,0,2,0,1 --- 1,2,0,1,0) on p. 933. He was probably the brother of Allen Brown (1,0,1,1,1 --- 0,0,2,0,1) on p. 932 who lived in Metal Twp. See below about Allen Brown. John Brown (2,0,1,0,0 --- 1,0,0,1,0) on p. 852. Related to Lazarus Brown the son of Thomas Brown, a Rev. War vet., with (1.0,1,0,1 --- 0,0,0,1, 0, plus 7 All Others and 3 Slaves on p. 850. This was the Brown Mills area south of Chambersburg. There were no Joseph Browns enumerated., but a David Brown, probably from the Little Cove area, appears with (1,0,0,1,0 --- 1,0,0,1,0) on p. 888. ------ In the 1820 Franklin Co. Census there were two John Browns in Metal Twp., but none in Warren Twp.! John Brown (0,0,0,2,0,1 --- 0,0,0,1,0) This John and his wife, ages 45+, had two sons age 16-25, p. 85; John Brown (0,2,0,0,1,2 --- 0,0,3,0,0 plus 3 in manufacturing (Mills ?) An Elias Brown, Joseph Brown and Stephen Brown are indexed on p. 83 of Metal Twp. There were no John Browns in Warren Twp. and only Eli Brown appears in Warren Twp.. _______ In the 1830 Federal Census there are no more John BROWNs in either Warren or Metal Twps.! There were two Joseph Browns who appear in Metal Twp. on pp. 238 and 241; and an Stebean (sic) Brown who also appears on p. 238. Only Eli Brown remains in warren Twp.. ______ Here are the Franklin Co., PA, Twp. Tax Listings for Brown: 1751 Antrim Twp. :Thomas Brown; 1753 Antrim Twp. : George; Thomas; George; 1753 Peters Twp. : Robert; George; Samuel; 1762 Antrim Twp.: Allen; Thomas; George; 1763 FANNETT Twp.: JOHN BROWN; 1763 Peters Twp.: Samuel 200 w; 1764 Antrim Twp.: Thomas 250 p; George 350 p; Allen; 1764 Peters Twp.: Samuel 200 w; 1768 Antrim Twp.: George 5 negros, 5 horses, 8 cows, 8 sheep, 400p. 70 c; 1768 Fannet Twp,: Allen 300w - 20 cows; George 200 W - 2 cows; JOHN 1 horse - 3 cows and 4 sheep; 1768 Guilford Twp.: Archibald Freeman; 1768 Peters Twp.: James 5 horses, 4 cows, 7 sheep, 2 negros, 150 p., 50 w. 10c; George 150p, 10c; 1769 Fannet Twp.: Allen, 3 horses, 2 cows, 2 servants, 400p, 20c; George 200w, 2c; JOHN 1 horse, 1 cow; 1769 Lurgan Twp.: James Freeman; 1769 Peters Twp.: James 2 horses, 2 cows, 8 sheep, 50p, 50w, 30c; JOHN Freeman; 1770 Antrim Twp.: George 3 horses, 10 cows, 7 sheep, 7 negros, 400o, 89c, 400p, 60c. Note p = Patented land; w = warranted land; and c. = cultivated land. ____________ Excerpts from "Forbes Road - Parnell's Knob to Cowan's Gap" pp. 48 to 49 by Harry E. Foreman, 222 High Street in Chambersburg, PA, 1950 (Note he wrote a seven volume set including the History of Little Cove): "...Five or six members of this early (BROWN) family were in the lower Path Valley at approximately the same time. Allen Brown is particularly noted. From the Johnson Family genealogy of Antrim Twp. quote: ' Allen Brown was from Cookstown, County Tyrone, (Northern) Ireland and settled in Fannett (now Metal \( in 1755, where he operated a store and traded with the Indians.' " I have found evidence that my John M. Brown, who m. Many Amelia FANAGAN (b. in 1808 in Hopewell Twp.) left Hopewell Twp., Bedford County in 1837 for Ohio. He was a miller born in Penn. on 7 Dec. 1796 and his father was named John and also b. in Penn.! Her father was of course b. in Ireland. They went to Clearport, Madison Twp., of Fairfield Co., OH where the family lived until about 1851/2 when they moved to Perry Twp., Hocking Co., OH. There he owned and operated the G. mill shown on the old Perry Twp. map of 1876 as being in the SE corner of Section 5. His 34 acres became the property of his daughter Mary Catherine Brown who married William TURNER who is show as his neighbor on the map of 1876. So I am now trying to find a John Brown in the 1800 Federal Census of Bedford County townships with at least one son 5-10 years old, and at least one son 10-15 years old in the 1810 Federal Census. I know that my John Brown was married by 1830 and had a son born James Brown b. in 1830/1, so he should appear in the 1830 Federal Census of Hopewell Twp. where his wife lived, but he does NOT! He was probably living and working in the mill in nearby Woodberry Twp.. He should appear as the Head of Household or Single Freeman in the 1817 Tax List of Hopewell Twp.he does NOT! There is a John BROWN and a Joseph Brown and a Jacob Brown in Woodberry Twp. on this tax list, but these are accounted for, and are not my John Brown line! In the 1820 Federal Census he should appear as a male aged 26-44 in either in his household or as a child of John Brown his father and he does NOT. The only John Brown in Woodberry Twp. that age was the one adjacent to Christian Souder who was of your line. He was shown with a wife the same age and they had 7 children. My deduction is that my John BROWN didn't arrive in the Woodberry/Hopewell Twp. area until after the 1820 Federal Census, may have only been there a few years during which time the son John Brown married and moved on before the 1830 census. A John Brown, age 30-40, with wife, age 20-30, and son under 5 were living in Colerain Twp. of Bedford County at the time of the 1830 Federal Census, and there were no BROWNS in Colerain Twp. in the 1820 Federal Census! Because of naming and marriage patterns, I am convinced my John BROWNS were of Scotch-Irish and not German descent. The given name of the father and grandfather of my two John Browns may have been William, although John or James are possibilities. I have no Joseph, Jacobs, or Thomas Browns in the family at all in subsequent generations.
Michael, I almost fainted when I saw John andrew Brown in your post. I am looking for my great grandfather John Andrew Brown who was married to Margaret Kathleen Mooney and were living in Kelso, Lincoln County, Tennessee in October of 1881 when my grandmother was born. Their children were Elizabeth, Ella, Willie, Mattie (girls) Almey and John (boys) and my grandmother Rena May. This is absolutely all I know about my greatgrandfather John Andrew Brown except that he may have died in Knox County, Tennessee. Could this possibly be the same John Andrew Brown as yours????? I really, really hope there is a connection here. Eagerly waiting your reply. The following excerpts were all found in the Randolph Co., NC library on various families that were in Randolph Co. at one time, alot of whom came to TN. If you can supply additional information on any of the following families/persons that explains their relationships to one another, it would be of great help to us. Thanks, Carol We ran across a pension application of an Edward Beeson in which he said he joined as a volunteer for the state of NC from Guilford Co. (now Randolph) in 1788 and his officers were: James Woods lieutenant, Wm Brown Sargent, Robert McCannas Major, Thomas Dougan Colonel and Butler General. He said after Brower was killed, Woods became Captain and Beeson became Lieutenant. They pursued the Tories about 40 mi to Fork Creek and besieged them in a house belonging to one John Needham. Then later in the deposition he said in 1779 they were roused by the Tories who came and burned Col. Dougan's house, Col. Belfour's house and they killed a John Brown and burned his house also. In a book called Randolph Co. 1779-1979 there was a chapter about the war that said "citizens began to organize against unfair taxation and the dishonesty of local officials. By 1766 they came to be known as Regulators" One of the leaders of the Regulators was Herman Husband a prominent citizen of Sandy Creek where he owned over a 1000 acres of land. Other leaders living in the Randolph area were Rednap Howell, Wm Butler, John Butler, James Hunter, James Pugh and Ninian Hamilton. Some other families listed as Regulators were Fruit, York, Craven, Kivett, Linderman, Branson, Low, Fields, Moffitt, Julian, Billingsly and Cox. " Later it said" the trial of the captured Regulators began at Hillsborough on June 4, 1771. Six men were executed. Harmon Cox, Wm Brown and James Copeland were later pardoned by the govenor. By mid June, over 3,000 Regulators had taken an oath of allegiance, other left the state. It is said that 1,600 families moved to SC or to what is now TN. Robin, The 1700's Browns you listed. Do you know the path of where these siblings traveled? You as well as others have info on the 1700's. Most of us have browns in the 1800's. What we need is a path pattern from the 1700"s to the 1800's so we can connect the dots. Then we can all work on going to the 1600's. I take it that your post means your Brick wall is Hugh Brown. I have 3 separate BROWN lines and this is the third of the deadends: Mary Catherine BROWN, b. 1825, AL. She married Francis Marion "Doc" SPARKS in 1845. Their marriage license was issued in Chambers County but was filed in Tallapoosa County. The SPARKS family lived in Tallapoosa, so it is possible (probable?) that Mary Catherine BROWN's family lived in Chambers County. Many of the SPARKS family moved to NorthEast Texas. Mary Catherine BROWN SPARKS died in Hopkins County, TX in 1910 and is buried in Cypress Cemetery in Franklin County beside her husband and others of the SPARKS line. Any help with Mary Catherine's parents? I have 3 separate BROWN lines and this is the second of the deadends: Daniel BROWN, b. 1757, married Mary Magdaleen (Surname Unknown). In 1787 they were in KY (actually it was still Virginia at that date)whe Susannah BROWN was born in the area that became Muhlenberg, KY. Susannah married Jacob HON in Russellville, KY, in 1803, and her entire family seems to have moved along with them to Nicholas County where Jacob's family lived. By 1815, the BROWNs and HONs had moved on to White County, Illinois. The HONs were "Dunkards" as their church was referred to and the BROWNs were probably German Baptists which were closely alligned with the Dunkards. Does this family mesh with anyone else's line? The lived in McMinn & Obion Counties in TN before living a few years in Murray County, GA. In 1845 they were in DeKalb County, AL. James died in 1876 in DeKalb Couny, AL. Looking for descendants and cousins of the following clan: BROWN, Spencer (1788-Savannah GA- 1868-Pinewood, Little Spring Creek, Hickman County, TN) Married: circa 1807 in GA to: WELCH, Nancy (1789-SC-1860 - Pinewood, Little Spring Creek, Hickman County, TN) Full-blooded Oconee Indian. I have a relatively good list of children and grand children for Spencer and Nancy, as these were my GGG Grandparents. I realize there have been other postings for various ones by the name of Spencer BROWN, but not too many. I hope this is the one YOU are struggling to find. Sincerely Hopeful, Michael David Brown Bakersfield Brigade
Hey, there, List Subscribers. I seem to belong to the German BROWN family who moved into lower Guilford Co., NC. There are Frederick, Michael and George, all born in the mid-1700's. My last proven ancestor is Adam BROWN, b. ca 1792 d. bet. 1880-1900 Hillsboro, IL. He md. Margaret KIME, d/o Philip and Dorothy GLASS KIME. Adam and Margaret had 3 children: (1) Margaret "Peggy" b. 1815 who md. Abram CURTIS (2) Simeon, b. 1821 who md. 1st Sally DEVINNEY and 2nd Mary KIME and lived in Hillsboro, IL and my ancestor (3) William Edwin, b. 1825 md. Lucretia MAY, d/o David MAY and Catharine HUFFINES. Am looking to find Adam's father who might be George BROWN, b. ca 1765 d. 1849 md. Mary Margaret [last name unknown] and buried Richland Lutheran Ch. Cem. at the Guilford and Randolph County Line. Would, also, like to hear from others researching families in that area esp. Adam BROWN who md. Catharine CLAPP, d/o Pall/Powell/Paul CLAPP. Rand. and Guil. were formed from Orange and Rowan Counties, NC. I also have some info on Randolph County BROWN families as my Adam moved here in 1856. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me in this matter and I will happily share what I know. Yes, all you old-timers, it's ME again, still searching for my gggrandfather who apparently was immaculately conceived and hatched from some remote cabbage patch in GA or AL! With the roll call, renewed interest in the list and apparently some new listers I'm going to try again. I've searched diligently through all the recent information, (thanx to all of you for sharing!) praying fervently that my fantasy would be revealed but alas, to no avail. The name on his tombstone in Lavaca, Sebastian County, Arkansas, reads: "Eusrey Brown, died 9 Oct 1880, Lavaca, Ark., 68 yrs." However, that is the only place I've ever seen it spelled that way and I don't know if that is his first or middle name. The Goodspeed history of Arkansas spells it Usrey and states that he was a native of Georgia. His marriage bond reads: "Usry", The 1850 Pontotoc County, Mississippi Census which lists his birthplace as 'Georgia', reads: "Ursury", a Mississippi deed spells it Ursey. Nevada County History of Arkansas spells it Usrey. Other census/document spellings are: Ursery, Ersry, etc. The 1860, Hempstead, Arkansas census says he was born in Alabama. Sebastian County, AR. Biographies state his birthplace as Marengo County, AL. According to the Eaves Family register his birthplace was Alabama. His grand-daughter (long deceased) said that Usery was born in GA. She also thought she remembered that his first name was James and, although she couldn't remember his father's name she and other grandchildren remembered that his mother's name was Elizabeth. You ALL know how many James and Elizabeth Browns are floating around American history in AL and GA which has made identifying this man absolutely impossible for me.....perhaps some of you better genealogists than I could do it but I have gone in circles 30 years trying to put this puzzle together. The first absolute and documented evidence I have of Usrey is his marriage bond which he applied for 13 Dec 1933 in Marengo County, AL. His bride was Lucinda Eaves, daughter of Howard Harvey Eaves and Faithy Ann Price (both born in Rutherford County, NC. Witnesses to the wedding was Isaac Shelby Evans (Eaves), a cousin to Lucinda. Lucinda was also related to Alice Gertrude Eaves Bradford. Usrey and Lucinda moved to Pontotoc Co., Miss in 1848 and on to Hempstead Co., AR in 1859. In 1870 they followed their son, Howard Harvey, to Lavaca, Sebastian Co., AR and lived there until they died. In the meantime they had seven sons and three daughters: James C. b. 5 Feb 1836 in Marengo Co., AL Martha Jane b. 12 Sep 1838 John Price b. 1841 (killed in Civil War, unmarried and childless) Howard Harvey b. April 1843 in Pontotoc Co., Ms. Faithy Ann E. b. 1845 William Thomas b. 1846 George b. 1849 (presumably died a year later) Abel Lewis b. 28 Sep 1850 Lucinda C. b. 1852 Usery Martin b. 1854 Mary Catherine b. 1860 Sterling/Starling R. b. after 1862 (nothing further known of him) So if any of these names, dates, or places, seem to fit into any of your genealogies, please, please contact me. Know this is long but in searching for my ancestry I'm hoping to add to someone else's (there's that give-and-take thing again!) and have much more on these descendants if anyone thinks we might connect.
