    1. Re: [BROWN] BROWN, Starke Va.-Ga.
    2. GONE TO GEORGIA by William C. Stewart continued page 265 In Jasper County, GA, 1820 were John, William, Jonathan, James, Daniel, William, Isabelle, B., J.G.W.(James G.), Alfred H., Benjamin and John. Stark Brown (pension papers S 31556) was born July 6, 1756 and married in Bedford County, VA, May 8, 1779, Tabitha Reynolds (Rigby?), with James Gatewood as security; Gatewood in Amherst County, VA., court in 1782 was guardian of a Stark Brown, orphan of William Brown of Essex County, VA. Stark Brown, the veteran, in 1785 signed a petition to divide Henry County, VA., (to form Franklin County, taken partly from Henry and partly from Bedford County). Stark enlisted in Amherst County in 1776, and applied in Walton County, GA, Aug 20, 1832 for a pension. On Sept. 8, 1846, his daughter Dosha, wife of James Wood (the deceased), said she was the only living heir of Stark Brown; tht her sister Matilda had married John Stokes (both dead) and that her borther Meredith had died about 1828. Stark's name appeared in the Wilkes County records before he moved to Walton County and Meredith is found there c1810. James Brown was born in Pendleton District, SC c1802, came with his family to Mulberry Fork, Jackson County, in 1820 and married Mary, daughter of Daniel Clower. James was a state senator in 1856. (This is the end of the BROWN section # 56) Hope this helps someone, Chocy Brown

    2. GONE TO GEORGIA by William C. Stewart continued from page 265 Stephen and John Brown were in the 1805 Jackson lottery and in 1807, John's orphans were listed in Cochran's district. John and Larkin Brown lived on Mulberry Fork about 1813 (Flanagan, Gwinnett County, v. 1, p. 419) and helped build Sardis Methodist Church. The name Larkin Brown is found in 1790 both in Newberry District, SC and in Wilkes County, NC, from which came the Clevelands and others who settled early in Pendleton District, SC, where on Dec 31, 1798, Larkin Brown and Hays Blair witnessed a deed from Charles Tucker to Jesse Coffee (Pendleton Deed Book E, p. 241). Cleveland Coffee was a neighbor of Larkin Brown in Wilkes County, NC. In 1827, there was a Larkin Brown in Newton County, GA, and another in Richmond County, GA, the latter a Revolutionary soldier, who drew Lee County land granted Jan 27, 1838. In Gwinnett County's 1820 census was Thomas Brown 120010-10010-00 in the area settle by numerous Jackson County people, as well as Capt. Fanning, Ephraim, Isaac, James, John, Joseph, Josiah and Wiley Brown. In Jackson County, 1827 lottery, Doss district, was Bond Veal Brown, a Revolutionary veteran, who was listed in the 1782 tax rolls of Prince William County, VA. Other Revolutionary soldiers listed in the lotteries were: Ambrose Sr., Newton County 1827; Benjamin, Edward and James N., in Elbert County 1827; James and Samuel, Clarke County in 1827; John, Robert and William, Franklin County, 1820; Meredith, Dekalb County, 1827; Moses, Newton County, 1827; Stark Brown, Walton County, 1820. 1. Re: [BROWN] BROWN, Starke Va.-Ga.
    2. GONE TO GEORGIA by William C Stewart pages 264 & 265 56. BROWN: None of the Brown family was found in the 1820 Jackson County census, but its members are found there before and after that date. In 1820, Aaron, John and Stark Brown were enumerated in Walton County; Benjamin, ezekiel, Lewis, Patrick and William in Madison County; James, Robert and Samuel in Clarke County; Ephraim, Jeptha, John (2), Jospeh and Larkin in Hall County; and James (2), John, Meredith, Richard, Robert and Sally Brown in Habersham County. William Brown had the distinction of being the first man to bring a suit in Jackson County, his case against John Burnett being called for January, 1797. Thomas Brown of Jackson acquired 230 acres in Franklin County Oct. 7, 1797. In 178, Bedford Brown of Wilkes County owned thousands of acres in Wilkes and Franklin (Jackson) Counties and seven slaves, on which he paid taxes, and he purchased more in later years, appearing in the Wilkes records through 1791. On June 10, 1788, he sold to William Hamilton 861 acres in Franklin (Jackson) County which was granted him in 1787 and on Sept 1789 Bedfored obtained from John Gardner 861 acres on Oconee River (Jackson County) which was granted to Brown, sold to Hamilton and then conveyed to Gardner by the sheriff evidently for failure to pay taxes or other commitments. By 1799, Bedford Dougherty on the North fork of Oconee and 300 acres adjoining C. (Sheriff Charles) on Davis Creek, in Capt. John Sheilds' Company, as shown by the tax list. Bedford left a will in Clarke County (Book 1802-1822). Elijah Brown of Pendleton District, SC, (enumerated there in 1790 but not in 1800, although referred to in a deed Dec. 29, 1801---------William Allen to Rober Orr) on April 5, 1790 sold land in Pendleton to William Spiers Brown of Lincoln County, NC, and on July 12, 1791, Elijah bought of John Stringer of Abbeville District, SC, 287 1/2 acres on Camp Creek in Franklin County, GA, granted Dec 19, 1788 to Stringer by Gov. George Handley, which Elijah sold the following Dec 2 to Henry Hamilton of Jackson County. (See 1800 Pendleton Census, pp 90, 102). Will continue this BROWN information in another message so this one won't be so long.---------------------------Chocy Brown

    1. [BROWN] Warren Brown - IL / IA
    2. John or Vicki Carter
    3. Here is my contribution to the roll call. I think I posted some of this last week, but here goes. Warren A. Brown was born in Mar 1856 in Illinois. He married Mary A. Dick who was from Iowa. He had a son named Asa Brown who was my great grandfather. Asa was born 11 Sep 1890 in Ute, Monona, IA and died on 14 Sep 1974 in Redding, Shasta, CA. Asa married Estel Izetta Williams on 6 Mar 1919 somewhere in Iowa. Warren and Mary's other children are Mary A. born Nov 1892 in Nebraska, Ora R. born Sep 1894 born in Nebraska, and Goldie M. born Jul 1897 born in Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa. I don't have any other information on them. Asa's children are Mary Ellen, Robert Leon, Ruth May, Elaine Faye & Margaret Estel. The first 3 were born in IA and the other 2 in CA. I have birth dates and spouses for all of these children and can possibly find out more information if someone is interested. I hope this helps someone. If anyone has information on Warren A. Brown from IL who married Mary A. Dick from IA. I would love to hear from you. 3. Vickie, Have you checked out the 2 marriages of Harrison Brown? This is what I found at Ancestry.com; Harrison Brown married Fanny Warren 28 March 1843 in Gallatin Co., IL. Harrison Brown married Jane Warren 19 November 1849 in Gallatin Co., IL. It looks like Harrison might have married sisters. Maybe there are children by Fanny as well as Jane. I know in my family sometimes sons are named for Mothers maiden name. Those might give you a clue to your Warren Brown born 1856 IL. None were listed for IL or MO for any year. But I did find one and he was in the Civil War. E Co 7th Cav Reg PA Private in Union enlisted 29 Oct 1861, died Murfreesboro, TN 15 Mar 1862. I found this at Ancestry.com. It is such an unusual name that there could be a connection for yours. Have you tried searching with just initials or with just Alexander as name. If I see anything at all, I'll let you know. This is probably not important but one of my James' grandsons was named Leslie Brown. In fact Leslie's niece just died this week in CA. Her name was Evelyn Groh 94 years old. We just found her this last year. Her health wasn't good so we didn't get to meet her. Not much help, Sorry, Carol Brown Hoskins Buffalo, WY hoskins@trib.com

    2. John E. Mellick
    3. The following MARTIN family was found in the 1850 census of Madison Co FL. It appears they may have come to FL from GA about 1843. Who was Mary Martin, and who was the Charles Martin? There was a John Martin, died at age 62 in the 1850 Mortality Schedule of Madison Co, was he the father of this family? This same family was apparently counted in Jefferson Co FL in 1850, less the mother, Mary Martin. Ring any bells???
