In my g-grandmother's obituary, Sarah Skinner Brown, it told of her being at home with the children while her husband was in the union army. I send a search form to the National Archives and their reply was there are more than five files for Alexander Brown so they would not search any farther. I am seeking Civil War information for Alexander. Alexander was b. 17 Feb 1826 in Ireland. His father was Alexander Brown Sr. and his mother's name is not known. He m. 29 Apr 1847 to Sarah Skinner and she was b. 18 Mar 1827. They had the following children all born in PA: 1. Lucinda, b. 1847 Jefferson co, PA. 2. daughter, b. Jefferson co, Pa, d. 1899, Sand Creek. 3. daughter, b. Jefferson county, PA. 4. George, b. 1856, Jefferson county, PA. 5. Wm. Giles, b. 1858, Jefferson county, PA. 6. Samantha, b, 29 Dec 1860, Jefferson County, PA 7. Margaret, b. 1854, Jefferson county, PA. 8. son, 9. son, 10. son, In 1871 Alexander and his family moved to Nelson, Buffalo county, WI. and later to Mondovi, Buffalo county, WI. He d. there 21 Dec 1912. I have a deed dated 28 June 1866 between James Postlothwait and Alexander for the sale of land in Ringgold township in Jefferson county, PA. The 1850 and 1870 census also place him in Jefferson county. I visited the Jefferson county Historical Society and court house this summer and could not find any information on his Civil War activities. I am not able to visit the National Archives so would appreciate any help I can get. Many thanks, Sharon Gunderson River Falls, WI

I have previously sent in looking for my great great grandparents: Joseph Adam & Mary Caroline (Gordon) Brown from Frederick Co., Maryland. I know that they left Maryland in the 1860's and went to Indiana, that was where my great grandmother Florentine Victoria Brown was born, Peru, Indiana in 1867. They were in or around Fort Wayne, Indiana until the middle of 1870's and went to Arkansas. I haven't seen this information on the rootsweb before; maybe I missed it. I have no ideal as to who Joseph Adam Brown's parents were, I'm hoping that someone will also have this information. I was sent the 3rd grandparents picture, but not their given names and no information whatsoever. Help! Understand that Joseph Adam Brown had many siblings and their descendants are probably in or near Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Hi Mary and Brown list, I went searching in the LDS site (www.familysearch.org) the other day, trying to find if anyone submitted anything on my Browns. I found that this information in the Ancestral File (not guaranteed correct!!): Benjamin Brown (b. ~ 1765, PA, died 1795, Nelson Co., KY) and wife, Elizabeth Ross were listed with 9 children. One was a son John Brown, b. about 1787, who married Anna Cotton. Just looking at the record, I can see some inconsistencies (4 children born before marriage date??). But perhaps it is a lead.... Hi to all, Here is my Brown, for the rool call you had while I was off line.. Sure missed a lot of letters.. Elijah was born in NC in 1804, acording to the census. I find him in Madison Al in 1830, along with another male about his age, that I think might be a brother. His wife Mazilla who is born in TN and a Daughter born in Al in the late 1820's. They move to Marshell Co. where they buy land and stay untill the Late/mid 1850's, when they go to Ark. In 1860 Elijah is listed in Randolph Co. and has died. there are several pieces of land owned by Elijah's but that makes it ahrd to know for sure which is his.. Family shows up in Christian twp, Independence Co after his death. (there are other Brown's inthis co. including another Elijah, or else something is haywire) One of Elijah's son's Christopher Columbus marries Rhoda COFFMAN and on her father's (will)court papers, a Elijah (maybe a P.) BROWN signs. Problem is my Elijah is suppose to be dead for a few yrs. WHO is this 2nd Elijah?? There is also another James BROWN about the same age as Elijah's sone James L. who becomes aa Rev. of the Baptist church, Stays in Ark and has several children. He has 2 marriages, the first to the daughter of Rev. CROW. (I am having to use my memory so won't get all names down of the children or 2nd wife) He has son #1 William E. married Burt Sherif, taught school in OKLA, 2 children,James Arthur and Athealea, #2 James C. who married Maud SHARP,3 children Robert, William, and Mary Hester, lived in ARK. #3 daughter Marie married Louis Fleschner and they lived in Little Rock, #4 Mauda Lee who works for Gov. in Washington, DC in the 1920's -30's.#5 Lenore, #6 Myrtle who married T.J. JAMES, died young and left 3 children Jeff, Paul, & Phillip. #7 Charles Spurgeon Brown died 1918 no children #8 DR.Harvey Holman BROWN married Alice LUCAS, 2 daughters for them, lived in Ark. Elijah's son Christopher Columbus, married a 2nd time and moved to Tx. # children Brinkley Boswell, (my Grandfather) James, and Rhoda. E's son - Nymrod did not show up in Ark. ? no records found. A daughter Frances did not show up either but ahve not found a marriage record for her either. SHe was old enough to have married. Nymrod was really to young to think of him going off on his own but possible. More likely he died in teens. ? where or when. Another son Leonadeas ? spelling married 2 times in Ark and had 2 son's, one was William, and the other Rufus, I think, Know it was R, pretty sure this is correct. Elijah had some daughters too, but can't remember the info.. Thank you for reading this, hoping someone might be able to add something!!! Emma, I noticed some naming patterns the same as mine in the info you gave. My Brown came from GA. When? I do not know. But he was in the Civil War, and in Mobile AL at that time. This is all I have. HENRY OLIVER BROWN b 12/26/1941(no birth place given) d 11/23/1927 in Mobile AL He married JULIA ALEXANDER b 1/10/1851 d 7/26/1940 Children of Henry O. BROWN & Julia ALEXANDER were: 1. Maggie Brown married Joseph F. AVERYT on 8/8/1900 2. Delta Brown married John Henry DAVIS on 6/15/1916 3. Emma Brown married William E. LOCKLER on 6/6/1900 4. Mary Elizabeth b 2/24/1876 Mobile AL d 7/10/1954 married C.C. GRIFFIN on 1/11/1893 5. Henry Oliver Brown, Jr. Mary Elizabeth BROWN & C. C. GRIFFIN married 1/11/1893 their children were: 1. Leo 2. Myrtle 3. Emma 4. Mable 5. Julia Estelle I had always been told that a lot of girls in this family. And that MAGGIE, EMMA, and MARY ELIZABETH were names passed down. But I believe that no one used the name of Emma after she died before 1910 ... I believe she was 5 years old. My grandmother gave me her sister's gold baby ring, with EMMA written on it. I have always regretted not naming one of my girls this also. The name JULIA was used alot, but it came down through the ALEXANDER line, my grandmother said. My grandmother said the GRIFFIN's were Irish. And the BROWN's were Scotch-Irish (she blamed this for her temper!) And TWIN births did tend to "run in the family" of BROWN. (I have twin grandbabies now). Any more BROWN TWINS out there? This could be something to look for. All my BROWN's (as are my TAYLOR's and GRIFFIN's also) are so elusive, I am beyond the point of "evidence" and records! ... I am reduced to even looking for tid bits in "naming patterns" & twins!!! And of course I am not getting any younger. I need to get everything down that I can find, now... before I find out the answers first hand! Because then if anyone wants to find out what I learned after crossin' over, they will have to ask John Edwards! ha! He died there at a ripe old age. His widow and family then returned to Hempstead County, Ark. Sorry, no dates available. He was the father of Mary Bartlett Brown b. abt 1815, who married Joseph Lewis
