Hi Alice, Try Ky. and before that, Pa/Va. My G-grandmother was Mahala Emmaline Brown. My computer crashed, so I have to look things up the hard way, paper trail! Looking for lineage of a John BROWN who married Mariah GORDING (read GORDON) about 1794. The marriage date is very approximate. The Corinth, VT vital records show that Mariah GORDING, the wife of John BROWN was born March 3, 1774. John BROWN sells land to my gggrandfather, Robert GORDON, in 1801. Any ideas where this John BROWN came from or his ancestors. Many thanks for all your help. Alice Gordon

Dear Folks, I've just gotten word from a trusted source that his computer was wiped out by a virus that came to him with an attachment called "Navidad" . It came from a name he was familiar with, so wasn't suspicious. It turns out that the person who supposedly sent it didn't. His Norton virus protection program didn't catch it. Carol
Trying to find any links to my Browns: Littleberry Brown was born in Va. in 1799 or 1800. He married Mary (Polly) Bailey in Franklin Co. KY on Mar. 30, 1819. In the 1850 Franklin Co. KY census, Polly is gone and the residents are: Berry - 50 Susanna - 22 (Susan, married Jesse Cheaney) Obedience - 9 (Bidsy, married William Cheaney) George - 21 (married Mary Cheaney) Samuel - 17 (married Nancy Jane Cheaney) Elizabeth - 63 (insane) Living next door is Berry's son & daughter-in-law: Cornelius - 30 (Neil) Sophronia - 32 (Phrone Hawkins) My deceased great-aunt, who originally documented our family tree, said there was another son, Byron, and a daughter, Sophronia. I also found a will in Franklin Co. which clearly indicates there was another daughter Lurenha or Lurinda who was married to Wm. T. Jett. If any of this rings a bell, let me know. Dave Sanders

Hello, James and others interested in this line. You posted to the Brown mailing list a few months ago. I was doing some quick research for Brown's in my local library and found a book "Early Settlers of Sangamon County" IL (I was in a hurry and forgot to copy the author/date, but can go back and get that this weekend). Anyway, I found info on these people listed below in your post! It doesn't say who the parents of James (b. 1708) were, only this: "BROWN, WILLIAM, was born April 19, 1779 in Frederick County,Virginia. The family have a record reaching back through his father, James Brown, born April 19, 1942, O. S., in Spotsylvania county, Va., to his father, James Brown, born April 29, 1708, O.S., in Middlesex county,Va., whose parents emigrated from England." I would be happy to copy this and mail to you (and anyone else) if you'll sending me your mailing address. It has quite a LOT of info on siblings and some info on William's life. I'll mail it out next Monday since I want to go back to the library Saturday to get the info on the title page for you. Happy researching! Hello, I'm new to the list. My name is Lana and I have been searching for the family of James S. Brown who was b. abt 1785 in VA (probably Rockbridge Co.). He md (1) unknown, had these known children and possibly more--Joseph G., Edward Henry, Albina, Stephen Woodruff; md (2)Helen Anna Kelley probably in TN and had Michael Servitis, William Irby, Sarah, Sirena, Olive, and Keziah (female). He is known to have gone to Obion Co, TN about 1809, is found there in 1810-20-?30 census though was in McMinn County when one child was born about 1813, lived in Murray Co., GA 1840 census and moved from there in 1843 per a son's obituary to DeKalb County, AL where he died about 1876.....though I didn't find him on the 1870 census; however, he lived with Stephen on the brow of Sand Mountain in "timber land" where they might have been overlooked, esp. if they didn't want to be found. Some of his children were at Sulphur Springs in 1870 and the family was known to be millwrights, work in lumber and sawmilling, and at least 2 of his sons were Cumberland Presbyterian ministers. If anyone has run across this person, I would appreciate any help I can get. As you likely know, researching the name "Brown" is difficult to begin with, but I've been chasing this information about 25 years. I've heard family stories that James is 1/2 Cherokee Indian, but I don't really have any proof of this. There was a James Brown who went with John Ross as a delegation to the President who went to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears and was Cherokee, but he is not mine. I do know that William's father was James Brown born Jan. 1, 1741 NC married abt 1775 in Guilford Co., NC to Martha Vernon born about 1753 in Wrightsborough, GA. They were Quakers but by the time they had been in Indiana from 1820, they were not Quakers any more. Do you think there could be a connection? Hi Its been awhile since I posted who Im looking for, so Im trying again. This is all I know. Harvey Lee Brown, who was born in Alabama, ended up in Texas and married a Susie Jones from Texas. They lived in Parker County or Parker, Texas. They had one son that I know of named Tom Lee Brown born November 1, 1890. Tom Lee Brown had a first marriage to who I do not know and had atleast 1 daughter. Eventually he made his way up to Blytheville, Arkansas and Steele/Braggadocio Missouri area and married Minnie Jewell (Potts) Hardin <--- (1st marriage) and had 3 children: Wanda Lee, Peggy Sue, and Harvey Lee. If any of this sounds familiar, please email me. Thanks and Happy Hunting, Angie Ricketts revncaer@brightok.net
Does anyone have any information regarding a James BROWN who moved from Guilford or Randolph Co., NC, to Wilson Co., TN, by 1817? In 1815, his son Stephen BROWN married a Polly CRANFORD in Wilson Co. In 1817, his daughter Jaley Ann BROWN married Elijah or Abijah RICE in Wilson Co. By 1820, James and son Stephen (and possibly other children) were in Lawrence Co., TN. By 1830, sons Stephen and Leonard were in Lauderdale Co., AL. This BROWN family was originally from VA (as Stephen was born there). It is also probable that James BROWN's wife was Native American. Her name has been passed down to us as WATHACAPEE. Stephen's family moved from Lauderdale Co., AL, to Wayne Co., TN, then on to Searcy and Izard Cos., ARK, and then on to Travis Co., TX. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Doug Powers

Received this today after posting to the Carbon County, PA List. I asked about the address 424/425 Center Street, Jim Thorpe. My grandfather was Arthur(1872-1969) BROWN. His wife was Kate(1872-1934) KANE. He and Kate are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Jim Thorpe. He lived in Jim Thorpe his entire life and at that address for the last 50 or so years of his life. His children were Mary Ann SMITH, Lucinda Ruth, Carrie E., Arthur W., Emma L. MULLEN, Charles, Violet DALTON and Clyde. Thanks, Dina Hi Dina, My wife, Elizabeth (Betty) nee Browning was from Mauch Chunk and I always show her the letters about Chunk to see if any of the names ring a bell. We finally struck close to home. Her cousin that just celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary is Danny (Daniel) Brown. His wife Claire Dunstan is connected to Betty's family. Danny's G/father had lived at the 424/425 Center St. address. If the phone conversation with Claire is understood correctly Danny's father was also Arthur and his wife was Irene (Kemmer). Arthur had 2 brothers: Clyde & Charles, 3 sisters: Lucy (Lucinda Ruth), Violet- who died in Maryland and Emma who married #1 Dr. Cutsi and #2 Bill Mullen. I hope in the near future we can get together with Danny and go over the information and hopefully come up with some dates. I hope we are some help to you and look forward to hearing from you.
