Mortimer BROWN, daughter of F.D. BROWN and Molly HURT, was born in 1870, Hot Springs (Garland Co.) Arkansas. She married James Madison ROUSE there in 1884 (at 14?). I believe the BROWNS had a dairy farm that has long since been taken into the city limits of Hot Springs, but from what I have "heard" they were well known in the area for their dairy products. If anyone has any information about these Browns, please let me know. Thank you very much. Midge Garza mgarza@cox-internet.com

This is for Eugenia: My GGG Grandmother was Rachel Brown, born in 1799 in N.C. She married Joseph D or B. Tate on April 22, 1813 in Davidson Co., Tenn. Joseph was born in 1793/94 in Orange Co., N.C. and died abt. 1858 in Yell Co., Ark. Rachel died on June 22, 1852 in Pope Co., Ark. That is all that I know about Rachel. I have no idea where in N.C. that she was born or how she wound up in Tenn. Do you know if there is a Rachel Brown in the family that you spoke of recently? Jane Little McEndree janemc@airmail.net
Hi List I sent some of this recently, but I have included you on this email because it includes additional birth dates and places of birth. Hi Lana Thanks for your reply. Yes , I know, Sand Mountain, I was raised in Boaz in Marshall County, AL. My Browns settled in and around Crossville, Kilpatrick, and Collinsville, in DeKalb County. Raymond Issac Brown and maybe W. L Brown moved to Cleborne County, AL, before the births of Raymond's children. Raymond and family then moved to DeKalb County between 6 Aug 1887 and 6 May 1890. Here is my lineage through my gggf. Lineage Name Born Location State Mother Jessie Mae Chastain Cox, 06/16/1912, Crossville, AL G Mother Sarah Ora "Sallie" Brown Chastain, 10/16/1885, Cleborne County, AL GG Father Raymond Issac Brown, 06/25/1855, Rockdale, Randolph County, AL GGG Father W. L. (Maybe Love") Brown, Abt. 1835, No other info. I am told that Raymond Issac Brown had large land holdings in DeKalb County, AL near Crossville, Boaz, and Kilpatrick. He left my Grand Mother two farms, one near Kilpatrick and one near Boaz. I understand that the larger portion of his farm is now the Auburn University, North East Alabama, Experiment Station. He married Evie Ola Thrash, b. 11 May 1866, on 15 Jan 1885. I am not sure where. My Grandmother was the oldest of nine children, the Others were, Benjamin O., b. 6 Aug 1887, Cleborne County; Fararmer (sp?) "Farmer" Allen, b.6 May 1890, DeKalb County; (all the remaining were born In DeKalb County) Vestula Estell, b. 26 Jan 1889; Alice Pearl, b. 15 May 1896; Frannie Viola, b. 10 Feb 1899; Alma Celie, b. 18 Mar 1902; an Infant daughter, b. 2 Jun 1907; and Beulah Lois, b. 27 Jul 1907. Most of the children remained in or around DeKalb County all their lives, on the farms they inherited. Most, if not all, are buried in the graveyard at the First Methodist Church in Crossville, DeKalb County, AL. I do have some info. on wives and Children, if you ar interested. If you have GEDCOM files, or files from other databases, related to this family, I would like a copy. This Email address is on a server which will be closed down soon. A better address for me is chcox@e7cs.com; but, I sometimes access this mail only on week-ends. I would like to know if you recognize any of these names. Thank you, have a nice day!! My brickwall is my grandfather, MINOR C. BROWN, b. Dec. 3, 1864, d. May 10, 1901. He is buried in Blackjack Cemetery, Burleson Co., TX. and on his tombstone is M. C. BROWN. I have only found him on one census and that is the 1900 Milam Co., TX one where it shows that he was born in MS in 1864 and also that his parents were born in MS. Wife is listed as Roxie, b. 1879 in MS and son James R. b. 1898 in TX. MINOR married Sarah Roxie Burrough sometime before 1898 and had two children, James R., b. 1898 and Alma, b. 1900. I think MINOR and Roxie lived mostly in and around the Rockdale, Milam Co., TX area. I'm having a hard time finding any information on MINOR as he was only 37 years old when he died and certainly didn't leave much of a paper trail. If anyone has any information on him I would be delighted if you would contact me. Thanks, Hazel BROWN, BURROUGH, MINCHEW, MARRS, ELLIS, PIERSON, WALLS, HENDERSON
Have MANY pictures of Brown graves from Middlesex, Westminster, Deer Creek, Bull Creek, Glade Run churches in southern Butler Co & northern Allegheny Co., PA. Will be happy to share, e-mail, etc. to those interested. Lynn Beatty kenneth.beatty@broadwing.com

I have James BROWN and Mary HILL. They had son Arthur in Mauch Chunk, Carbon County, PA in 1872. If there are siblings, I have not found out about them yet. I have written to the Episcopal Church that Arthur attended and hope to hear something soon. I guess Nettye told you I haven't touched this stuff in years. I have some stuff stored away for now, but i do have a notebook to refer to, albeit somewhat out of date in some areas. But here goes.... Missy Lehman (1977) & Michelle Brown (1980), my daughters Frank W. Brown Jr. (me) (1953) m. Marcey Hornbucke Frank Wilson Brown (my dad) (1916) m. Lillie Couch James Norman Brown (1883 in Dickson) m. Georgenia Arantz James Frank Brown (1852 in Dickson) m. Ladocia White Aquilla Brown (1829 in Dickson) m. Martha Clardy John Brown, Esquire (about 1800 in Va. or Ga) m. Peggy Laws John Brown (about 1760-70, died about 1850 in Dickson) m. Patty (martha) Gilbert Family legend has it that John and two brothers came to America stowed away on a ship from Wales. I've tried to check this out, but, of course, if they were stowaways, it's unlikely there's any record. Otherwise, it's almost impossible to trace down a "John Brown" in the 1700's. There are several, but I have nothing to go by. My best guess is that the family came south from Virginia into Georgia near Elberton, Ga. (i think!). I don't have that documented, but apparently that was common route around the mountains. The family then moved west to Dickson. If they were part of a revolutionary war land grant, or vying for land in the Georgia land lotteries, i don't know, but those are possiblities. Peggy Laws father's name apparently was Aaron Laws, and her mom's name was Feraby. There is documentation of the auction of Aaron Laws' estate. He died in 1825 in Dickson and people purchasing items at his auction included Gilberts, Laws and a John Brown. Feraby apparently bought a lot of items (could have been wife or daughter) (Tape Di-22, page 137 in nashville archives) A fella named Tony England in White Bluff, Tenn., near Dickson is apparenlty related to us somehow. He has information on some of this stuff. >From what i've found, the 1850 census indicates a Esquire was born in Georgia. Goodspeed's History indicates the family moved to Dickson in the 1790s from S.C. This actually would place them in Dickson before 1800. But the 1860 census says he was born in Virginia. (sometimes the head of the family would leave the family behind and claim land, then return, so that might be what happened here). The Census does not list a wife, meaning Miss Laws died before 1850. His occupation was listed as a farmer. Value of land listed at $800. Grown family members Margaret and Aquilla were still living at home in 1850. (This margaret probably was his wife Peggy Luther, half his age) On the older John Brown: Goodspeed's History of Tennessee, Dickson County, refers to John Brown of Turnbull Creek as one of the early settlers in the area in the 1790s. He settled with names such as Edward Tidwell, Samuel Sellers and Minor Bibb (all names who later intermarried with Browns). Goodspeed's indicated Brown and his neighbors came from South Carolina. A will in the Family History Center in Salt Lake City indicates he died about 1850 and that his wife was Martha. It mentions kids James, John and Solomon). Census in 1830 indicates his age was 60-70, which would put his birth 1760-70. My late great aunt Vivian Brown told me the stowaway story, saying the three brothers went separate ways after arriving in US. Port of entry unknown. On the Gilbert (Martha or Patty?) name, John Brown's will refers to his wife Martha. Goodspeed History refers to a Thomas Gilbert of Dickson County who fought in the War of 1812 (It also tells of an M. Gilbert who was killed near Charlotte, TN, in the Civil War). Patty(or Martha) Gilbert was about the same age as John Brown, according to the 1830 census. That's pretty much where i hit a dead end. The only way i could think of to trace John Brown back was to trace the family histories of the Tidwells, Bibbs, Stuarts, Whites, and Sellers to see if maybe there were records of John Brown parrellelling them. But that task was too daunting. I gave genealogy a 4-5 year run, but finally tired of too many dead ends. Perhaps i'll pick it up again some day, but not now. Yes, I've been to the Brown Cemetery in Dickson, too. Plus, there's another Cemetery there that holds many of the Browns' in-laws. I think it's Stuart Cemetery near Burns, TN. Nettye may have given you all this already. I think i've shared much of what i know with her. Good luck on your search. If you make any major breakthroughs, let me know and i'll file it away with the rest of my stuff for future generations. I am searching for information on Charles BROWN, born circa 1817 and married to Martha WILSON, born circa 30 August 1826. I believe this family settled in Kentucky but don't have their birthplaces. Their son, Thomas BROWN -- born circa 1844 -- married Nancy J. BARNES, is shown in the 1860 Monroe County, Kentucky census. Any information at all would be greatly appreciated! Colleen
Dear List: I'm researching James Brown b. 5 Mar 1783, d. 18 Sept 1864 and his wife Jane Porter Brown b. 27 Mar 1790, d. 10 June 1870. James was an early settler to Mercer Twp., Butler Co.,Pa., near Harrisville, along with his brother Ebenezer, in 1797. Jane Porter's father was Samuel Porter of Mercer Co., Butler Co., Pennsylvania. Two Butler Co. histories say that their father was born in Ireland, served in the Revolutionary War and lived for a time in Westmoreland. Since both brothers named their first son Alexander I believe that James and Ebenezer's father will be named Alexander. Is anyone familiar with this Alexander? James and Jane's children: Alexander b. 1811 m Eliz. Hoskins Ebenezer b. about 1816 m. Hannah Samuel b. 27 Mar 1813 m. Sarah Vaughan from RI James b. 24 November 1813-14 m. Jane Ralston and/or Andrew R. b. abt. 1826 Washington George Calvin Alice Jane Margaret Other possible children: Adam Harvey Matthew Nathan Butler Co. histories say there were fourteen children and not all lived. Samuel, Harvey and Nathan served in the Civil War, possibly others. Kate Ross __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores. Hi, I am new to the list. I am searching for information about several Brown lines, but the major one is my great great grandmother, a lovely brick wall. I have the following information from the census records and a local history book: BROWN, Emeline b. 1824 in the state of New York. d. May 4, 1879 in Champlin, Hennepin, MN and is apparently buried in the Champlin cemetery in an unmarked grave. Married c. 1860 HASTINGS, Chauncey E. b. 1816 in MA Their first child was born in PA in 1860 and two others were born in MN in 1862 & 1863. Emeline and Chauncy raised her nephew Frederick BROWN b. 1860 in PA. He appears on the census with them at the age of 5 with his parents noted as having been born in New York (father) and New Hampshire (mother). I have no idea who his parents were other than apparently a brother of Emeline. Any help or clues would be appreciated. Jo Hogle
