Hello Browns, Once again, I'll put forward my request for help with my Brown ancestors. I am trying to find ancestors beyond my gggrandfather, William F. Brown. He married Rachel Clouse and I have lots of informantion about her family. William F. Brown, b March 30, 1817 in Unicoi County Tennessee. He married Rachel Clouse on Feb 3, 1840. Rachel was from Marshall, North Carolina. Her date of death was Jan 7, 1906. William died Sept. 21, 1908 and he and Rachel are buried in the Clear Branch Baptist Church in Unicoi County, TN. William and Rachel had 6 children: 1. Thomas Brown - Thomas served in the Civil War. He joined in 1862 and was in the 60th Tenn Infantry Regiment, also called the 79th Tenn Infantry Regiment. After the war he returned home to Washington County, TN but in 1873 he moved to Fayette County in West TN. He provided information about his life that is recorded in The Tennesee Civil War Veterans Questionnaires, Volume 1. He mentions his mother's parents, but does not record anything about his paternal grandparents. 2. William Frank Brown. Married Mallie Tinker 3. Catherine Brown. Married George Tomkins 4. Margaret Brown. Married John Tilson 5. Martha Jane Brown. Maried Elijah Tilson 6. John Brown b. March 14, 1853 - My ggrandfather. John married Rachel Mandosa Chandler and they had 12 children. One of their children was my grandfather, William Floyd Brown, b. Feb 17, 1890. I would love to hear if anyone has information about my Brown family. Thanks. Brenda

WILLIAM BROWN, (b. LI or RI, in the year of 1758 or 1761). died February 10, 1826 in Lewis County, NY, age 65 or 68 (it appeared both ways, but is likely to be 68 years. making him born 1758.) A William Brown located in East Hartford, Conn. between the years 1780 and 1801, lost several small children in death in a fire. It is not known if it was this same man or not. He married in Connecticut, probably East Hartford. after 1789 to Jerusha (Rockwell) Burnham, (widow of Simeon), who was said to have been born in Nova Scotia about 1756, but baptised in East Hartford, CT June 28, 1763. She probably brought 5 Burnham children to the marriage with William Brown. Jerusha Rockwell Burnham Brown died in Lewis County, NY. Oct. 1, 1839. There were at least two children, and possibly a third one in this marriage: 1. Acci (?) Brown, b. ?; md __Rice(?) 2. Laban Brown, b 11-23-1795 Ct.; md. 15-1819 Jeff Co., NY.. Damaris Bamey Laban and Damaris migrated to Auburn Ohio, and settled in Jackson Co IN. They had Jerusha, Emily R., Caroline, Minerva, Sarah Sophronia, Francis William (twin), Franklin E. (twin), and John Marshall Brown. 3. John Brown. (b. 3-22-1800) Ct; md 4-25-1824 Lewis Co, N.Y, to Lucinda Stone (b. 4-8-1800) Her father served in the Revolutionary War and died as a result Of "bone sickness" contracted from the war. John died in Leyden, NY. on 25 Aug 1879, and is buried in Leyden Hill Cemetery. north of Boonevllle. N.Y They had Jerusha, William, Sarah, Albert, Alfred, James, Lucy, Elvina, and Helen. I have been told that some of Jerusha's Rockwell brothers or cousins lived in Lewis County NY, and that she spent her last 13 years with one of them, although I can't confirm this. I have never been able to find present-day descendants of John Brown and Lucinda Stone, any of the Burnham kids, or any trace of the mysterious "Acci". My Barney ancestors are well-documented, but these Browns elude me. Jim Patrick
I read the gentleman's informative reply and it appears there was a simple misunderstanding. I think he assumed you were a neophyte genealogist because of your (apparently naive) claim that the original Browne was born in 1575. Of course you meant that your ancestor's first name was "Originall", not that he was the first Browne. Your form was proper and his reply was well-intended and useful, it just answered the wrong question. I recently messaged to this site concerning an ancestor, Originall Browne b. 1575 (means this person was born in the year 1575, and this is as far back as I can go with this line and I would like to go further), which I have been using and reading on different genealogical sites for quite a while. A gentleman responded to my message with a great deal of information; much of which I already knew; but some was new to me. It appeared that the statement above (Originall Browne b. 1575) was confusing to him and he thought it would be to others. Is he correct in this concern? Is the form of the inquiry incorrect? One thing I have always tried to do is to make my messages fit to the forms most used. I want my messages perfectly understood. If they are not understood, they are useless and a waste of time. If anyone has any thoughts on this please inform me of my error. In the meantime, I have received several excellent answers to my first inquiry; for which I am grateful to those responding. If anyone else has information on one Originall Browne b. 1575 England; d. 1655 Virginia, please let me know. Thanks for reading. Gordon Reid Hale Grand Prairie, Texas

At 11:59 AM 12/31/2000 -0500, GRHaleJr@cs.com wrote: > My 9th G-Grandfather was one Originall BROWNE b. abt 1575 in England and >d. 1655 in Virginia. > > I would like to be able to continue the line further back but have been >unable to do so as of right now. > > Does anyone know ANYTHING about this Originall BROWNE, such as: >parentage, children other than Richard and William, name of spouse and her >parentage? > > Thanks for reading > >Gordon Reid Hale >Grand Prairie, Texas The term "Originall (sic) BROWNE b. abt. 1575" is very confusing to me, and no doubt others as a number of families with that surname have been existence in Britain for much longer than 1575. You may be referring to your immigrant ancestor with that name. If that is the case, and you are trying to find information the ancestry of that immigrant you need to embark on extensive and perhaps expensive research. Before that can be done, you need to know the country and county of the family you are researching, and about when that person arrived in America (Virginia?). The next step is to consult Peter Wilson Coldham's "The Complete Book of Emigrants 1607-1660." I note that there are many BROWNE listings in it! One of the best resources are the records on line of the LDS Church. Another great source of information about early British families is Family Tree Maker's Family Archives Series, "Family History: Notable British Families 1600s to 1900s." on CD 367. If you are fortunate and the family was of notable English stock, you may find references to it (with pedigrees, coats of arms, etc.) in the Visitations of the Heralds to the various counties in England. These were published by the Harleian Society in England and may be found in libraries in the US such as The Library of Congress. The next step is to hire a reputable person in the UK to access any BROWNE wills from the county of interest and abstract them for family history information. The parish records of the county in question may exist in printed form or extracts of births, christenings and marriages (but no burials) filmed by the LDS Church. Once you have gone through this rewarding experience you should publish the results of your research so that it can be shared. George W. Page

Do any of you know if any of your Browns ever lived in Humphreys Co., Tn.. My gr-grandmother, Carolina Brown, Spradling. came to Burnet Co, Tx. with three of her younger children in 1878 from Dickson Co. Tn. to join three of her older married children who had all ready come to Tx.. We know nothing of Carolina Brown, Spradling before her marriage, except a statement made by Thomas O. Brown; which said that he had attended Obediah Spradling and Caroline Brown's wedding at her father, R. T. Browns home the 24 Dec. 1839 in Humphreys Co. Tn.. We think that Carolina's parents were born in Kentucky. The names Thomas O. Brown and Martha J. Brown, who may be her brother, or related to her in some way, appear on a document in which Obediah Marcel Spradling , one of Carolina's sons, served as Attorney-in-fact for them in the 1873 sale of a tract of land in western Dickson County. If any of you know anything about any of the Brown's mentioned above, would love to hear from you. I have all of Carolina's information since then and would be happy to share. Ruth Parker-Tx.
My 9th G-Grandfather was one Originall BROWNE b. abt 1575 in England and d. 1655 in Virginia. I would like to be able to continue the line further back but have been unable to do so as of right now. Does anyone know ANYTHING about this Originall BROWNE, such as: parentage, children other than Richard and William, name of spouse and her parentage? Thanks for reading Gordon Reid Hale Grand Prairie, Texas

Happy New Year All: Thought I'd post a few generations that have been a problem and see if any of you might have a connection with "My" BROWN line. Lorenzo BROWN b. 12 September 1807 Boston, MA. d. 5 November 1871. He was the son of James BROWN and Nancy Bryant. I'm told that James, the son of Hope BROWN was disinherited and disowned by his family who were wealthy because he took up with Nancy Bryant who was his fathers' servent girl. When they married, they had in addition to Lorenzo.....a William 1806, Norman 1811, Sophronia 1813 and Clarinda. Clarinda was born in Woodstock, N.Y. 1817 which means that James and Nancy must have left Massachusetts and moved to N.Y. at some point. Clarinda died at Claybanks, Oceana, Michigan by the way. Lorenzo married first Diana CONANT and they had two children before Diana died. He married second my great, great, grandmother, Clarissa Ann NYE and their family numbered five. They were George Lyman BROWN, Julia Ann BROWN, Eugene L. BROWN, (My great grandmother, Ellen Brown and a Lyman BROWN. Most all the children were born at Eden Valley, Erie, N.Y. except for George born Broadalbin, Fulton, N.Y. I have very little data on any of the children I've mentioned but would sure like to find someone who has any. Ellen, b. 1 August 1853, died in Maywood, Illinois. She married my great grandfather, Sidney G. Hickok at Coral Michigan in 1872, son of James Hickok and Jane GALBREATH. Ellen and Sidney had six children including my grandmother, Nettie Pearl (Harris) HICKOK. The others were Bert Lorenzo HICKOK, Claude Clifford HICKOK, Clara Belle HICKOK and two more daughters both born in Cleveland, Ohio. I have more data to share in the event that I make a connection with someone on the list. My ancestors go back to Thomas BROWN and Bridget BATEMAN as I imagine some of yours do.
