    1. [BROWN] Re: BROWN-D Digest V01 #47
    2. OK , Im on a roll tonight, I have made several postings and have several more to make. Now if I get a response to even a few I will be happy, at least for a few days. John Layette BROWN m. Serilda RITTER there children were : Oma b.1874 ,Coquessa Jane b.1877, Abner b.1879 ,Felix b.1882 ,Leona b.1888,Newbern b.1899. All these children were born in Missouri in and around Stone Co. Does anyone recognize any of these people . Now to the puzzle, I have been told Serilda had read a book and saw the name Coquessa, this is supposed to be how my grandmother was named. My grandmother hated the name , said she wouldn't name a dog that. Its funny how some people don't like there given names. I think it is a verry pretty name. And a verry unique name.Does anyone know of a book with this name or have you ever heard it before ? Pronounced cokwesa . Thanks for any help you might give. I've got just a common every day name Carolyn

    3. I reviewed some material I had in my files and discovered that there is a very good chance that David S. Brown and Mary E. Pate Brown were the parents of my grandfather, John Starling Brown. From the 1860 U.S. Census for Texas, Van Zandt County, David & Mary have an 11 month old son named Starling and Thomas P. & Lucinan(da) Brown have an 11 month old son named John S. Brown. Since I have nothing to determine which one is the correct chain, I only have the remark made by my father's sister who said that Martha Brown McKnight was John Starling's aunt. John Starling Brown was born 29 July 1859. If that is correct, David & Mary would be the correct parents and they are from the William R. Brown line (Thomas P is his nephew). The only information I have regarding DAvid & Mary Brown was in a book from Henderson County (submitted by Billie Brown) which dated their marriage date as June 1859. Is there anybody out there who can confirm whether John Starling Brown was born to David & Mary or to Thomas P and Lucinda Brown? 1. Re: [BROWN] Ancestry.com
    2. I really hate to "bash" anybody, but I sub'd to Ancestry's 1920 census; it is not searchable, only browsable, and the states are sorted by county, and then by enumeration district. Which is fine, if you happen to know which county your ancestor lived in for that particular year; then, how do you translate the enumeration districts? I searched on line info, and there is a book that lists all of the ed's for each census year, and what it translates to in common English. The book costs about $150. I emailed Ancestry, with 2 questions: 1) when will their search engine be available; and 2) how can I translate these ed's into something that I might find on a map. I received a form letter which gave me the instructions on how to perform a search; like: click on name;click on county; click on Search. I lost it; since I am paying for this, I feel I deserve an answer to a simple question; and not a form letter which really insults my intelligence. I responded with the questions in Caps; and told them I do not want a form letter. That was the beginning of this week. I have not heard from them. I'm really disgusted. 3. For MHoltz, Looking at descendants of Elijah GARTON and Frances DICKINSON, Frances having married John BROWN after Elijah died, I see marriage connections with the families Shumate and Shreve. Griffith Gartin (Garton), son of Elijah and Frances & stepson of John Brown, m. Hannah Miller 18Sept1785 in Greenbrier Co., VA at the Linville Creek Church. They then resided in Monroe Co., VA. One son, Hugh GARTIN, m. Rachel Shumate 20Jun1809, Milbourn, Monroe Co., VA. Another son, James K. Garton, m. Amelia "Milly" Shumate 15Jun1824, Monroe Co., VA. Two other brothers married CARPERs, two married GREENs, two married HINCHMAs, others married a WILLIAMS, SWINNEY, CALLOWAY and PETERS. There was a Matilda SHREVE somewhere, but can't find her at the moment. She may have entered the line for one of Griffith's brothers. You don't say where or when, so I'm not sure if we are in the same area and talking about the same families or not. Gail

    1. [BROWN] Augusta Co. VA & Christian Co. KY
    2. William Gilbert
    3. Hi Fellow Brown Researchers: I have just joined the list and would like your help with the following Browns in my Garton family: Frances (Fanny) DICKINSON, (b. ca. 1735), dau. of Nathaniel & Elizabeth Dickinson of Spotsylvania Co., VA m. (1) Elijah GARTON b. ca. 1732 in Spotsylvania Co. VA - d. ca. 1774/5 Intestate Augusta Co., VA (His estate was sold at auction 13Oct1775). They lived in Orange Co. ca. 1759 and moved to Augusta Co. ca. 1768. Had 8 children. m. (2) John BROWN of Augusta Co., VA on 25Aug1778 in Rockingham Co. and had one son by him, also named John BROWN Jr., who was executor of her will, dated 1May1824, probated 14Mar1825, Todd Co.(formerly Christian Co.) KY. We don't know when John Brown died, but probably around 1807 when we believe Frances Garton Brown followed her daughter's SHANKLIN family to Christian Co., KY. It is my speculation that John BROWN was considerably older than Frances, and his children by his first wife were probably considerably older than the Garton children who ranged from age 22 down in 1778.. According to research done by the prominent Augusta Co. genealogist, Katherine G. Bushman, "John Brown owned land on Moffett's Creek in southern section of Augusta County which he purchased in the 1780's. The Rev. John Brown of New Providence Church married (performed the ceremony for) Joseph Shanklin and Fanny Garten (dau. of Frances and Elijah Garton), step-daughter of John Brown." We were told by another researcher that John Brown and the Rev. John Brown were related to the Dickinsons, just how we don't know and we don't know how they were related to one another. Ms. Bushman lists the following children for John Brown which came "from deeds executed by all those named in selling the land of John Brown in 1830, and finally in 1854." John BROWN Sr.'s children by both marriages: 1. James Brown, m. Elizabeth ? . They were in Hickman Co., KY in1830. 2. Hannah Brown, deceased before 1830. 3. Daniel BROWN, was in Madison Co., IL in 1830 4. Elizabeth BROWN, m. a TAYLOR. They were in Madison Co., IL in 1830. 5. Jane BROWN, m. John Risk. She was deceased by 1830 and her children were in Scott Co., KY in 1830. 6. William BROWN, was deceased by 1830. 7. Sarah BROWN, deceased by 1830. 9. Mary (Polly) BROWN, m. Nathaniel GARTEN. They were in Monroe Co., VA in 1830. (Nathaniel Garton was an "Indian Fighter" and a step-son of John Brown.) 10. John BROWN m. Elizabeth ? . They were in Todd Co., KY in 1830. (John Brown Sr.'s son by second marriage.) 11. Nancy BROWN m. George Wright. Moved to Ohio and died ca. 1854 when the following 7 children were listed: a. John BROWN, Illinois b. James BROWN, Iowa c. Susanna (Brown) McBRAYER, Kentucky d. Rebecca BROWN, m. Nathaniel GREEN, St. Joseph Co., IN e. Hannah BROWN, m. Philip SUITER, Scott Co., Iowa f. Eliza J. BROWN, m. John H. SUITER, Scott Co., Iowa g. Elizabeth BROWN, m. John Smith If indeed John BROWN SR. was related to the Rev. John BROWN and they both were related to Dickinsons, it is very possible that Frances Dickinson Garton was a cousin to the John BROWN she married second. The maiden name of Frances' mother Elizabeth is still unknown, but I have been exploring the possibility that she may have been a BROWN, although currently it looks more like she may have been a COLEMAN. However, there are Browns intricately connected to the Colemans too. Can anyone help me put the pieces to this puzzle together? I'm sure many of you have a "John BROWN" in your family and understand what an impossible task it is to trace him. So, if any of you have connections to any of the above or have any clues for me to follow up on, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks for your help, Gail gailgilbert@earthlink.net
