    1. [BROWN] Brown in MS & AL
    2. Mike Chapman
    3. Hi Shirley, I'm working on Browns in MS & AL. My great grandfather Newton Raymond Brown was born somewhere is MS in March of 1846. He was married to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Barnes in Limestone County on June 19, 1870 and he lived the rest of his life there. Their children were Paralee, Matthew Spears "Mack" (my grandfather), Delba "Del", Nannie, Ollie, Nina, Maggie, and Bertha. I don't know where in MS Newton was born but have been told it was either Tupelo or Iuka and I don't know if either one is correct or not. Newton served the Confederacy in the Civil War and is said to have fought at Shiloh. He had a metal plate in his head as a result of a wound during the war. I looked at every Brown household in the 1850 census(when Newton would have been 4 years old) and I could not find him. I suspect his family must have already moved to somewhere in Alabama at this time. There is a Newton Brown in Lauderdale County (adjoining county to Limestone) that's the correct age living with his father Elija. I think this might be the right family but I'm not sure. I would like to find out (and prove) who Newton's parents were. Thanks, Mike Chapman

    3. The BROWN family I have just started researching is also found first in MA (from Ayre, Scotland). In 1900 I find the widowed wife, Agnes Kennedy Brown, in Ware. I know she had 12 children but I don't have the whole list of names yet. William Kennedy BROWN moved to New York. My mother-in-law says she has the names of the children, so I need to ask her again. I know there was a brother Huigh and a sister Grace. 3. You are possibly looking for the relatives of the famous abolitionist, John Brown of Harpers Ferry, WV. That John Brown was the son of Owen and Ruth (Mills) Brown of Torrington, Conn. His family is descended from Peter Browne (b.c. 1632 in Plymouth, MA - d. Mar. 9, 1691/2 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn.). Double click and Check-out #8 (Owen Brown) at: <http://members.aol.com/ptrbrwn/jbc.html> Click on link of John Brown at the top of the page to go back by generation all the way to Peter Browne from Mass.. John Brown was b. May 9, 1800 in Torrington, Conn., the son of Owen and Ruth (Mills) Brown who were m. Feb. 13, 1793. Owen Brown was b.c. 1761 and Ruth b.c. 1762. The first of Owen Brown's kin to arrive in America some believe came on the Mayflower in 1620, being Peter Browne. Others believe a later Peter Browne who arrived in Conn. about 1650. "However, other investigators, such as the Rev. Clarence S. Gee, of Lockport, NY, an authority on the Brown family genealogy, believe that the Mayflower Peter Browne was John Brown's direct ancestor." [Richard O. Boyer, "The Legend of John Brown"(New York: Alfred A. Knoph, 1973), p. 168] Owen Brown's father was Captain John Brown who died in the Rev. War, who was in turn the son of a John Brown, b.c. 1695 (At least one years before the abolitionist's birthday in 1800). He was the captain of Train Band Nine of the Eighteenth Conn. Regt.. The abolitionist's maternal grandfather was Gideon Mills who had also served in the Rev. War as a lieutenant who was the son of Rev. Gideon Mills a well known Conn. preacher and graduate of Yale. The Owen Brown family consisting of seven persons including an adopted brother of John Brown (a Levi Blakesley, age 11); dau. Ruth, 7; John, b. 5; Salmon, 3; Oliver, 1, and an infant daughter in arms left Conn. in 1805 for Ohio's Western Reserve in the company of Benjamin Whedon, a Conn. schoolmaster. George W. 2. I am looking for information on a Brown family in CT. I don't know too much at this point, but they lived in the eastern portion of CT, possibly in or near Preston. The wife was Eunice, but I don't know her maiden name. I don't know the husband's name, and it is probably that he died well before the wife, possibly during the Revolutionary War, or even earlier. This was in the mid 1700's -- as far as I know, Eunice was born in 1732 and died in 1805. Any information that anyone has about this family would be greatly appreciated. Norma

    1. [BROWN] George A. Brown
    2. Wayne and Rose
    3. George A. BROWN (born April 15, 1847 in Halifax) -- I don't know which Halifax (NS, RI) married Minnie L. NEWELL of Barrington, Nova Scotia. Lived in US. George was in the Civl war, enlisted 2-3-1862 and separated in 1865. Minnie was only 15 so this was probably before he married her. He enlisted in Brightwood, District of Columbia. --- His address on the back of the discharge papers is 169 Clark Road, Brookline, MA. So by 1865, he was going there or living there. Minnie was born in Nova Scotia in 1850, but we don't know where or when they married. By 1873 they were in Boston, MA where there first child was born. From 1877 to 1886 they were in Rhode Island, where the rest of their children were born, and four of the five died there. The latest in 1886.

    3. Good Morning All It has been suggested to have all interested parties list the nBrown ames they're researching (ie, John Brown, VA, Minnie Brown, ID, etc.)but with a list of over 800 subscribers I think that would create a lot of mail many would not like. So what I am wondering is having a webpage where a person can submitt their Browns they are researching, area and email address. I would put a tag about the site on the brown list so anyone receiving a message would get it. Also include the site in the welcome message a person receives. I've done this before with county lists I manage but never with just a surname list. If you would like to see what the county site looks like you can go to my homepage Good Morning All It has been suggested to have all interested parties list the names they're researching (ie, John Brown, VA, Minnie Brown, ID, etc.)but with a list of over 800 subscribers I think that would create a lot of mail many would not like.
