Hi, Has anyone heard of James Brown, married Hannah Abbott. Son, Braxton Brown, m. Rebecca Donnelson b. abt. 1803, son: John Brown, married Sarah Crase/HIcks, daughter, Mahala Emmeline Brown married James Wesley Osborne, b. 1844 in MO.? I have just started on my Brown's and have been sent 2 lines by 2 different 'cousins'. The other one comes down from Valentine Brown. I don't know which one is mine, as they both lead down to Haley [Mahala E. Brown], so one has to be wrong. I can't go hunting them until I know who I'm hunting for. Going to Ky soon to try and find where my Grandma was born, in Menifee Co. Ky. She is the d/o James and Haley. Dear List, I recently made a trip to the DAR Genealogical Library and in my short time there (I could have spend a LOT more time there!) I was able to make a new connection in my family tree. I am a descendant of Aaron Brown and his wife Hannah of Canton, ME. Anyone with additional info or questions on this line or the allied families are invited to email me or answer me here. Thanks, Heidi Agin heidi_agin@juno.com Descendants of Aaron BROWN. See end of document for current source citations. First Generation 1. Aaron BROWN1. Aaron married Hannah2. I believe this is Hannah Proctor. I have an LDS marriage citation for : Aaron Brown m Hannah Proctor, Sept 5, 1797, in Nashua, Hillsboro, NH. I do not have corroborating documentation to prove that this couple is the same as my Aaron Brown and Hannah, but the time frame fits very well, based on the date of birth of the first child, as well as the middle name of Proctor given to several of the Brown children. (notation on April 8th, 2001) Aaron and Hannah had the following children: + 2 M i. James BROWN was born on 5 Aug 1798 and died 188?. 3 F ii. Nancy BROWN was born3 on 28 Dec 1799 in Canton, ME. She died on 24 Apr 1824 in Canton, ME. Nancy married Daniel BARTLETT4. Daniel was from Hartford. 4 M iii. Leonard BROWN was born5 on 18 Mar 1801 in Canton, ME. He died on 2 Sep 1824 in Canton, ME. + 5 M iv. John BROWN was born on 29 Dec 1802. 6 M v. Rhuben Proctor BROWN was born6 on 29 Jan 1805 in Canton, ME. 7 M vi. Jefferson BROWN was born7 on 22 Sep 1806 in Canton, ME. He died on 11 Oct 1806 in Canton, ME. 8 M vii. Arthur BROWN was born8 on 16 Oct 1807 in Canton, ME. He died on 12 Aug 1825 in Canton, ME. + 9 F viii. Rebekah/Rebecca Proctor BROWN was born on 5 Feb 1810. +10 F ix. Abigail Proctor BROWN was born on 29 Mar 1812 and died on 28 Dec 1893. 11 F x. Susanna C. BROWN was born9 on 16 Jul 1815 in Canton, ME. Susanna married Daniel WALKER. Daniel was born in Livermore. 12 M xi. Hiram BROWN was born10 on 9 Feb 1817 in Canton, ME. He died on 11 Mar 1817 in Canton, ME. 13 M xii. Orin BROWN was born11 on 20 Oct 1818 in Canton, ME. 14 F xiii. Belinda BROWN was born12 on 1 Jul 1821 in Canton, ME. Belinda married COFFIN in Texas. Second Generation 2. James BROWN (Aaron) was born13 on 5 Aug 1798 in Canton, ME. He died 188? in Grafton, ME. James married Mary THOMPSON. Mary was from Hartford. James and Mary had the following known children: 15 M i. James Monroe BROWN was born14 on 15 Nov 1825. Last known residence in 1882 in Hanover, ME. (per Campton Vital Records found at GAR Library) 16 M ii. Arthur BROWN was born15 on 24 Sep 1827. 5. John BROWN (Aaron) was born16 on 29 Dec 1802 in Canton, ME. John married Huldah. They had the following known child: 17 M i. John Q. BROWN was born17 on 11 Sep 1825. 9. Rebekah/Rebecca Proctor BROWN (Aaron) was born18 on 5 Feb 1810 in Maine. Rebekah/Rebecca married Lewis C. JONES19, son of Prudence, about 1830. Lewis was born20 about 1808 in Maine. Lewis "was a farmer." Lewis and Rebekah/Rebecca had the following children: 18 F i. Abigail (B. or P.) JONES was born21,22 on 12 Feb 1831 in Canton, ME. Abigail married Thomas COOMBS. 19 M ii. Samuel C. JONES was born23,24 on 23 Sep 1833 in Canton, ME. "Was a farmer." + 20 F iii. Luzerne (W. or C.) MCCOLLISTER was born30 on 14 Dec 1845 in Canton, ME. 27 F iv. Molly MCCOLLISTER was born31 on 8 Jan 1851 in Canton, ME. She died on 18 Nov 1852 in Canton, ME. Third Generation 20. Luzerne (W. or C.) JONES (Rebekah/Rebecca Proctor BROWN, Aaron) was born32 in 1837 in Maine. Luzerne married33 Robert SWETT about 1855 in Campton, ME. Robert was born34 about 1833/1834 in Madrid, Maine. He was engaged as a carpenter in 1860. Living at that time in the household of Lorana Gifford, a tailoress, and her fourteen year old son, George. Interestingly enough, Lorana and her husband, and then toddler son, lived next door to the Jones' (Lewis and Rebekah and their children) in 1850. Robert may be the son of Robert, son of James in Madrid, ME, but this is only speculation at this time. Robert and Luzerne had the following children: 28 M i. Herbert A. SWETT35,36 was born on 20 Jul 1856 in Canton, Maine. He died on 13 Feb 1928 in Canton, Maine. Herbert is not on the 1860 Census enumeration, I dont know why. He obviously was alive lived to marry per below. Herbert married Emma F. HAYFORD. 29 M ii. Robert A. SWETT was born37 in 1857 in Maine. 30 F iii. Harriet H. SWETT38 was born39,40 on 6 Nov 1858 in Canton, Maine. 31 F iv. Lizzie Plummer SWETT41 was born42,43,44 on 20 Oct 1860 in Canton, Me. She died45 on 24 Mar 1953 in Portland, ME from Congestive heart failure, cerebral arterioscleoris, and hypertension and was buried46 on 25 Mar 1953 in Pine Grove, Falmouth, ME. "Mrs. Hutchins before her marriage was Lizzie Plummer Swett of Canton, daughter of Robert and Luzerne Jones Swett. Graduating from the schools of that town, she came to Portland to work at the age of 17. Here she met Mr. Hutchins and they were married March 1, 1879, by the Rev. Mr. Day, then pastor of the Chestnut Street Methodist Church. ... Mrs. Hutchins is an expert needlewoman and has made many beautiful quilts and done much knitting." - Per the Portland Press Herald, March 2, 1943 on the occassion of her 64th wedding anniversary. Lizzie married48,49 Charles Ilsley Goodwin HUTCHINS47, son of John HUTCHINS and Martha A. RUSSELL, on 1 Mar 1879 in Portland, Cumberland, ME. Charles was born50 on 8/9 Feb 1852 in Biddeford, ME. He died51 on 20 Nov 1943 in Portland, ME and was buried52 on 23 Nov 1943 in Pine Grove, Falmouth, ME. Per the 1889-1991 Portland, Maine Directories, Charles I.G. Hutchins worked as a foreman baker. Two addresses are provided in that directory, 30 Pearl, Portland and 162 Franklin, Portland. In a 1943 newspaper clipping from the Portland Press Herald, Portland, Maine: "Mr. Hutchins, born at Kennebunk, son of John and Martha Russell Hutchins, spent his youth in that town and Biddeford. Coming to Portland as a young man, he learned the baking trade which he followed for many years, working for concerns of W. C. Cobb, Goudy and Kent, and F.N. Calderwood. >From 1902 to 1912 he was a baker and chef at the Portland City Home. Soon after entrance of this country in World War One, he entered the Kittery Navy Yard where he worked in the electrical ship until his retirement in 1932. Always fond of horses and the set, he tells many interesting storeies of his youth when he drove stage coaches and hacks. In his spare time he enjoyed trips along the Maine coast in tugboats with his old friend, Captain Oliver. He is a past noble grand of the Ancient Brothers Lodge of IOOF, past cheif patriarch of the Encampment and a member of the Grand Lodges of Maine." - Portland Press Herald, March 2, 1943, on the occassion of his 64th wedding anniversary Pine Grove Cemetery/Falmouth Forside Cemetary - For information, contact Pine Grove Cemetery Corp at 9 Waites Landing Rd - Falmouth, ME 04105-1931 or by calling 207/781-2357. 32 M v. I am looking for information on GEORGE BROWN who I estimate was probably born about 1830 in New York. He married CORNELIA TRUMBLE who was also born in New York about August 1832. They moved to Wisconsin (probably around Oshkosh) and had a total of six children. Most of my information on this family comes from the 1900 census and it shows Cornelia as a widow. She is living with her oldest daughter, ELSIE READ. According to the census, Cornelia had 2 living children out of a total of 6 born. ELSIE BROWN was born in Wisconsin in April 1858. Dear Readers Who are my Grandfather Wm Thomas Brown's Parents? Story #1 It has been suggested that Caroline Brown, dau. of Brinkley Brown and Sarah Cobb Brown, had him out of wedlock and the father being Asa Williams who married Caroline's sister, Susan Brown. There are no Bastard Bond records at the Dooly County Ga Courthouse, but there was a fire in the Dooly Court House in the late 1840's, which may account for no record. Wm T Brown was born between 1840-1842. Caroline Brown m- John Smith Oct 26, 1843, Caroline Smith m-John Berryhill Aug 8, 1854 Story #2 Below, William R. Brown had a son William age 10, this may be William T Brown, but no middle name is given. If you know of any connections that my help me determine my Grandfather's parents, please let me know..... ___________________________________ Additional information that may help>> "Sons of Robert Brown and Mary Ann Polly Rembert of Sumpter Co., SC" (see below) >From the 1850 Dooly County Ga., Census, Pulaski County Ga., Marriage Books and "History Of Dooly Co., Ga." A few weeks someone on the list responded to my Brown query asking about Burwell Brown.in connection to my line. Since then I have taken notes when I ran across the name, but unfortunately have deleted or misplaced the address.Therfore I'm posting it to the list in hopes he or she will see it. This is all from the internet so I can't vouch for it's accuracy. Item #1. Mary or Martha BATTE d/o Henry , b 1667 Prince George Co VA m 1st Mr. BROWN. Children Jonathan and BURWELL. (somewhere I found mention of her will , but can't seem to locate it right now---I'll keep looking ) Item #2. Brunswick Co VA order book 1 pp 335 1740 BURWELL BROWN, security for Burchett, now wife of Edward GREEN and late widow of Joseph Turner, decsd , for her administration of the sd Joseph it is ordered that the sd Edward and Burchett give the sd BURWELL bounden security or deliver up the sd estate to him for indemnities. ( Burchett's maiden name was Lundy ) Item # 3 Marriages St.John's Church , Henrico Co VA 1787 : Francis BURWELL Green md Mary BATTE Item #4. Burwell BROWN in Brunswick Co 1740 Clues?? (1) Luneberg St James Parish Tithables 1764 : Lewis BURWELL and Armisted BURWELL. (2) Lewis GREEN b abt 1639 VA : Childen: Lewis GREEN b abt 1680 m Frances Gilliam. ( parents of James and BURWELL GREEN ) and BURWELL GREEN b abt 1670 m Ann Polythress. I am extremely interested in learning how all these surnames are connected, and believe untangling all the threads will lead me to my Ancestor Henry BROWN, b 1783. I am a direct descendant of : # 1. Elizabeth BATTE and William LIGON 1682-1764 d/o Henry BATTE and Mary Lounds. ( * Several Battes married JONES , as did the Ligons ) # 2.Henry BROWN m Susannah LIGON. They named a son Richmond JONES ?!? #3.Edward GREEN ( bef 1700-1784 ) is my 5th great grandfather. Richmond Jones Brown m a descendant of this Edward Green. These families were early emigrants to VA and later moved to the Wake/ Johnston Co area of NC , Anson Co and SC and points south over the years. They tended to intermarry for many generations,( several children of one family marrying siblings of another, and probably more often than not related in some way.Other names affiliated with these lines are TAYLOR SPEIGHT , WATKINS, GRIFFIN , SANDERS, TULLY., HOLMES, BYRD-- and of course, BATTE, GREEN, BROWN, LIGON and JONES. Can we make a connection ?
