Hello All, Just wanted to send a reminder so that you can mark your calendars. Hope that everyone had a SAFE Holiday Season. Not sure about everyone else, but I need to get outside and do some stomping around in some cemeteries. I've had enough of the cold and the snow for this year. Our ancestors used to have very large reunions in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana. From the time that David Hoover founded Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana in 1806, his father Andrew Hoover along with other family members held very large family reunions. Now it is our turn. My sister Marcia and I are organizing the event. We have reserved a small building (with tables, chairs, and power) and a picnic pavilion, located in Glen Miller Park. Bring your laptops and exchange data with others. We will also have a computer, printer and scanner. Since we are opening this up to anyone, but in particular the following surnames: SLOAN, BROWN, HOOVER, DILL, GILLESPIE, MURPHY, DEARDORFF, CASKEY, and BUSH, we are hoping to have a good turn out. Their will be a "bring your own food" picnic at the pavilion. There is both a Meijer and Wal-Mart’s deli where picnic style food may be purchased. There is an outdoor grill pit and we will provide the charcoal. Paper ware, flatware, bottled water, pop and coffee will be provided. Please RSVP so that we have a headcount for planning purposes. WHO: Anyone WHAT: Family Reunion – See names above. WHEN: 9 June 2007 9 AM to 4 PM WHERE: Glen Miller Park, Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana WHY: To have fun, meet cousins, and exchange genealogy information Need additional information or to RSVP please contact Dave Sloan [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) Home 719-391-0590. I came across the following hand-written journal from the 1840's and 1850's, written by Betsey Priest, and including a poem written for her by Harriet K. Brown. The price is somewhat high, but this item will be priceless to you if this is one of your ancestors! See description below. Item #180087217055 Bidding ends February 25th. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180087217055&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSCC_Pr4_PcY_BID_Stores_IT&refitem=180086449367&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=active_view_item&usedrule1=StoreCatToStoreCat&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget Description: We are offering here an incredible piece of hand written Americana, a journal and poetry work kept by an American lady named Betsey Priest in the 1850s, before the Civil War. During this period, publishers--in this case, Roby, Kimball & Merrill of Concord, New Hampshire (or Massachusetts, the state is not specified)--produced blank journals for ladies to write in. This one is very special. It is in leather at the spine with gilt titles, fine maroon leather, with cloth covered boards. There is a title page (see scan), and four steel engraved prints, including the title page which carries a hand colored print (see other scan). The rest is hand written by Betsey Priest in a fine hand (see third scan). The writing is mostly poetry, some of it presumably by her, some of it copied from other pens. One of the poems is called To Betsey. We are not sure who Betsey Priest was, perhaps an ebay person can help us identify her. All the copied poems are by women. And the book contains two different locks of hair, a common practice in early America. One of the locks is blonde, the other one is darker (see scan). We also see here a fine example of early needlework applied to one page, a little wreath and bow. The wreath was woven from human hair, as it is affixed next to a poem beginning, "This lock of hair I once did ware, I now entrust it to your care, When this you see this remember me, When this you look upon wrote by my hand, and it will stand when I am dead and gone." Indeed. Some of the poems are dated, dates in the 1850s, though we think the album dates from at least 10 years earlier than that. One of the poems, Seek Wisdom, has a place name, Marlborough, July the 2nd, 1856. We are not sure where that is, precisely, as there is more than one Marlborough in America, and some towns changed their names. Two other handwritten poems carry place names, Fitchburg and Hadley (Massachusetts). One of these poems is called For Betsey Priest, and is signed Harriet K. Brown, Fitchburg, Feb. 5th, 1857. The book is sized 8x6 and a half inches, about 100 pages (not paginated). We have handled many objects of interest to those who wish to study Women's handicrafts and concerns in early America, but this one, hands down, is the most important piece of female Americana we have ever seen. Amazing.
I've been unsuccessfully trying to find solid evidence for BURIAL information for my great-grandparents... Hank BROWN (born to James H BROWN & Nancy READ JAMES on March 9, 1864 in OR), was a lifetime logger. He died Dec 20, 1934 at the home of his daughter, Violet in Sheridan, Yamhill Co, OR. The Sheridan Sun newspaper (Dec 20, and 27, 1934) and his death certificate both indicated that he was buried in Falls City, OR, by Sheridan Undertaking, of Sheridan, OR. I have been unable to locate proof of his burial, or to find his stone. His wife, Della (Belle) SYRON BROWN, was born to Montgomery SYRON & Mary Elizabeth LYNCH on Jan 5, 1878 in Polk Co, OR had six children. She died May 22, 1911 in the now defunct logging town of Black Rock, Polk Co, OR. The Sheridan Sun (Thurs, Jan 28, 1915, p.8) and her death certificate indicated her death date. She was said to be buried in Falls City by Chapman (undertaker) of Dallas. I also have been unable to locate or verify her burial location. Help? Additional background info: There were 3 James H BROWNs living within Polk County in the 1860s. My James H BROWN is of Mercer County, KY and was b in 1826. He died March 11, 1898 in Yamhill County, OR. The children of James H BROWN & Nancy READ JAMES were: Elizabeth Ann (sp- Robert Luke BOOTH, mar Mar 11 1869) Emily (sp- Thomas A HELM, mar Feb 6, 1873) Thomas C William Henry (Hank) My James H BROWN is NOT related to the Hussey or Yocum families. I am looking for a source of proof of the marriage of Verna Montgmery Brown to Maude Lee Bryant, supposedly in September 1921, arguably on the 10th or 11th. I'm also looking a source of proof of the marriage of Winifred Marguerite Brown to Calvin Alvernon Dixon in Mississippi or maybe Alabama on March 25, 1942. I have been unsuccessful in finding documentation in either case. Thanks for any and all assistance.
